When do you remove your Christmas decorations?

I walk daily with the kids and noticed that on the 28th some lights had already been taken down. I thought it was a bit early but I suppose better to get it out of the way while you’re off, get ready for the new year etc. We were a bit disappointed though as there are some elaborate ott decorations and we love looking at them!
I usually take our tree down on 4th Jan or after but am thinking about doing it today as it’s so big and bushy it’s overtaking our front room. Plus collection stated to have it out the front by the 3rd.

Should we stay festive for a day or two? Or just get rid of it while I’ve got the motivation?!

Happy new year everyone x

I wanted to take ours down today but as we are not working tomorrow, DH suggested we leave them for one more day, so we are. It's usually on NYD for us.

CornishTiger · 01/01/2026 15:04

Normally New Year’s Day which I have today. It’s taken ages. All tidy and correct for next year.

Im working tomorrow and have a busy Saturday. Didn’t want to do it Sunday. Back school Monday. Want the house straight and mentally clearer for having done it.

I like them up for New Year’s Eve. Each to their own though.

FestiveFruitloop · 01/01/2026 15:07

I’ve been getting the feeling this year that there’s a bit of a swing back to leaving them up till Twelfth Night. I thoroughly approve. 😄

I love Christmas decorations and am always sad to see them come down. Every year I consider leaving them up till Candlemas, might actually do it this year, especially as the real tree’s still going strong.

GalaxyJam · 01/01/2026 15:39

I usually aim for 12th night but we’re all out at work/school/hobbies so we’d end up doing it at midnight. So it’ll be Sunday I think, when we actually have some time.

Alfiemoon1 · 01/01/2026 15:40

Taking 1 down today and 1 down on Saturday as they are dh nights off work and I need his help putting them in the loft. I like them down before ds birthday on Sunday

Nope. First weekend in December.

Similar though in the sense of having them up a long time before the twelve days of Christmas.

We put ours up at the same time as you but we will keep them up until Twelfth Night - this is just because I love having them up for a long stretch so I use the traditional date (as long as the tree is still looking passable by that point).

ETA: I’ve just read that Candlemas was a traditional pre-Victorian date to take them down. Sadly I don’t think our tree will
last that long.

HelpMeGetThrough · 01/01/2026 15:54

Oh well, looks like I’m going to have a shit 2026. I’ve put a load of tea towels on to wash on NYD.

Just waiting to get hit by lightning or whatever is coming.

spiderlight · 01/01/2026 15:59

I've got into the habit of taking them down on 2nd January but I'm dying to take them down today.

dynamiccactus · 01/01/2026 16:01

I didn't know about the Candlemas thing until I was away for a weekend last January (last week of Jan) and a couple of churches/cathedrals we visited still had their Christmas trees up.

One of my neighbours left their (subtle) outside lights on until Candlemas last year.

I took the outdoor lights down yesterday afternoon (NYE). Latest I do that is NYD. I put them up on Monday 22nd, so they were up for 9 evenings in total. I don’t put up outdoor lights every year but when I do the max they are up is a week before and a week after Christmas.

Our tree is still up - will take that down at the weekend probably. It went up on the 22nd too, which was a bit later than usual for me. That is usually up a week before Christmas, but rarely up as early as two weeks before. I am usually keen to get the tree down NYD but as we put it up later I’m still enjoying it so happy to leave it an extra few days until the weekend.

Christmas is a period of time that hasn’t finished until 12th Night at the earliest. We haven’t even reached post-Christmas yet.

Playingvideogames · 01/01/2026 16:10

We took the tree down last night but the tinsel, paper chains and light up reindeer in the front garden will probably stay up until Saturday. We put the tree up on 30th November this year (normally do 1st Saturday of December) and agreed it felt a bit early. Next year we’re aiming for decorations up on the 12th and down on the 6th.

EveryDayisFriday · 01/01/2026 16:10

We don't do a traditional Christmas here, more like a mish mash of rituals that work around us, in between catching up with loved ones and physically and emotionally resetting for a week or two.

I usually start undecorating on 30th Dec for a deep clean before NYE, fresh start and all that. I decided to put it back to after as we had the ILs over today and it seemed nice to keep the decs up. They'll come down today/ tomorrow to deep clean over the weekend.

TiredofLDN · 01/01/2026 16:12

The 6th.

But it will probably be the 7th this year, as DS will be out at clubs until late, so a good time to whizz them down.

Trentdarkmore · 01/01/2026 16:14

Took the tree down before Christmas due to depression as anniversary of significant bereavement approached.
Took the rest down 27th, I think.

LorenzoCalzone · 01/01/2026 16:14

I did mine NYE. I just felt like it, the house was feeling cluttered.

rightoguvnor · 01/01/2026 16:25

I began ninja-ing around the house disappearing bits and pieces on 30th. As of 6pm yesterday we have just the outside lights and the Xmas tree left. They’ll go either late tonight or tomorrow.
it would be nice to stick with tradition and wait until Twelfth Night but everyone here is back to work and I have the pleasure of returning to work on night duty so best to get the place clear and clean.

I’ve done 3 loads of washing.

deste · 01/01/2026 16:30

Did it all two days ago.

MsSeuss · 01/01/2026 16:31

We took ours down yesterday. They’ve been up close to a month and whilst I do adore the decorations being up, after Boxing Day I’m always itching for a reset and to give the house a good ole scrub.

House looks pretty bare but it’s as clean as a whistle and ready to go back to work Monday.

You know there aren’t actually any rules about it? Only traditions. And there are many Christmas traditions that people choose not to follow. I’m an atheist for a start 😂, so Christmas is a just mid winter festival here. We don’t have roast turkey, we don’t have Christmas pudding… I do like to keep my decorations up until after the New Year, because I like to, but nothing bad will happen if people take them down earlier!

Overtherainbowandfaraway · 01/01/2026 16:35

Mine go up beginning of December and come down boxing day.
I love that big clean before finding homes for the new toys.

UniquePinkSwan · 01/01/2026 16:37

New Year’s Eve. Hate going into a new year with decorations up.

I’ve done 3 loads of washing.

I’ve done washing every day including Christmas Day - there’s 12 of us skiing each day - we’re getting through loads of washing. The snow is constant here so lots of wet and dirty clothes

I remember a thread last year which said doing laundry on the 1st washed away your luck. I did a shit load on 1st Jan last year, and just assumed another old wives tale.

We had a horrible 2025, so just in case, and even though I’m not usually superstitious , the washing is staying in the basket until tomorrow.😁🤞

But I did just take the decorations down as I was feeling cluttered.
