When do you remove your Christmas decorations?

I walk daily with the kids and noticed that on the 28th some lights had already been taken down. I thought it was a bit early but I suppose better to get it out of the way while you’re off, get ready for the new year etc. We were a bit disappointed though as there are some elaborate ott decorations and we love looking at them!
I usually take our tree down on 4th Jan or after but am thinking about doing it today as it’s so big and bushy it’s overtaking our front room. Plus collection stated to have it out the front by the 3rd.

Should we stay festive for a day or two? Or just get rid of it while I’ve got the motivation?!

Happy new year everyone x

Took them down on Saturday so 27th. Had them up since end of November so we were ready to be done with! That’s how we like it, have them up for the building up to Xmas day, getting excited etc and then down before new year. We have a big tree and I wanted the space back to tidy and sort the house.

I’m not just talking about the tree, it’s everything, packed (thrown in a box) and then put away.

Yeah but surely taking the decorations off takes the same length of time for a real tree as an artificial one? The only difference is how the tree itself is stored/disposed of? It probably takes me 10 mins to take the decorations off and put them in the box, then 5 to put the tree on the drive.

Takes us about 15 to 20 mins to get the decorations down, including the tree back in the box.

No chance of having a real tree again, bloody pain in the arse the couple of times we did.

That’s impressive. One of our trees takes ages because of the glass baubles. The other tree has cheaper decorations on that are just scooped into a box but then the tree itself is really old and each branch needs individually removing and flattening so that takes ages too.

Then we have lights inside and out, wreaths, garlands, foliage and lights up the stairs, baubles on various plants, ornaments on shelves, reusable advent calendars… it’s a Christmas explosion and takes ages to pack it all away!

Mine came down this evening. We went out for lunch, came back and watched stranger things and then down they came. I’m working tomorrow and we’re having a new bathroom fitted so just wanted them gone. Still need to tackle the outside lights though which is a job for Saturday.

WhineAndWine1 · 01/01/2026 21:05

Mines is getting taken down tomorrow. Can’t wait to get back to normal.

What about all the other shite, sorry decorations around the place?

tsmainsqueeze · 01/01/2026 21:10

Obviously what others do with their decorations has no bearing on me at all but i can't help but think how miserable it seems to take down your tree etc on Boxing day .
I love Boxing day possibly a little bit more than Christmas day , a day to relax, eat nice food ,watch tv , whilst your tree and fairy lights twinkle away in the depth of winter ,perfectly cosy.

I have other decorations, but you were specifically talking about the time taken to take down real trees vs artificial trees weren’t you? I was just saying my real tree doesn’t take any longer, or is any more faff than an artificial tree.

I’m not worried if anything from the tree gets broken, it’s cheap stuff from The Range, so pull it off and in the box it goes.

Other stuff around was a bit of tinsel for “dramatic Christmas effect” and that’s it.

Never put anything else outside. Neighbour more than makes up for that with a front garden lit up like Heathrow on a busy night.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 01/01/2026 21:13

As close as I can to 12th night. Indoors that is, so this Sunday this year. Outdoors stay on until 12th night, then switched off and taken down as soon as I have time on a dry day

Nah, I was meaning all the crap, not just the tree.

GalaxyJam · 01/01/2026 21:17

Oh, my mistake.

Proudofitbabe · 01/01/2026 21:27

As it’s a relatively big job the trees and most other decs come down on our last day off before Twelfth Night, but we always leave a couple of other decs out until actual Twelfth night. Everything went up early Dec this year.

Tammygirl12 · 01/01/2026 22:12

12th night here too

StarsTwinklingPomanders · 01/01/2026 23:38

When I feel like it probably not for a good while yet

billiongulls · 01/01/2026 23:44

Next Saturday or Sunday, usually the weekend before I go back to work

Pineapplewaves · 01/01/2026 23:58

Mine are coming down Sunday as we are all back to school and work on Monday so for us Sunday is the last day of the holiday.

Candlemas

I couldn't leave them that long, but tend to leave the tree for another weekend after Epiphany/Twelfth Night

Liftedmeup · 01/01/2026 14:51

The three kings/wise men bringing their gifts haven’t turned up yet! That’s Epiphany and why it’s still Christmas.

Exactly!
I feel sorry for the Three Kings...they seem to arrive too late for most people

TheUsualChaos · 02/01/2026 00:13

Christmas trees will go on the 6th but I'm leaving the fairy lights and greenery on the shelves and mantle piece until as close to Candlemas as we can. Just feel we still need something through the long weeks of January.

Mistyglade · 02/01/2026 01:29

28th. Big clean up and away.

PARunnerGirl · 02/01/2026 02:03

Hogmanay, so New Year’s Day feels fresh and new. It seems sort of melancholy to me to start the new year with Christmas decorations up, but I have no idea why I feel like that because it wasn’t how I grew up. My family abided by the twelfth night rule!

Sbmpp · 02/01/2026 02:07

We have to take down the outside decorations two weeks after due to HOA. I leave the tree up at least until March! I love Christmas.

mathanxiety · 02/01/2026 03:04

My tree is going out on Sunday. Its a big job and i wont have time for it during the workweek. Everything else will be put away on the 6th.

redrose115 · 02/01/2026 03:47

Already gone. Was done on 29th Dec. I don’t mind to leave it to 1st Jan but an opportunity came up where DC was in childcare and easier to pack away and do a clean of the house before ringing in 2026. We had visitors over Xmas and not much time to clean properly for two weeks. Had to be done.
