When do you remove your Christmas decorations?

I walk daily with the kids and noticed that on the 28th some lights had already been taken down. I thought it was a bit early but I suppose better to get it out of the way while you’re off, get ready for the new year etc. We were a bit disappointed though as there are some elaborate ott decorations and we love looking at them!
I usually take our tree down on 4th Jan or after but am thinking about doing it today as it’s so big and bushy it’s overtaking our front room. Plus collection stated to have it out the front by the 3rd.

Should we stay festive for a day or two? Or just get rid of it while I’ve got the motivation?!

Happy new year everyone x

Got everything down this morning. Wanted a fresh house for the new year!!

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 01/01/2026 12:14

The tree and specifically 'Christmas' decorations (Father Christmas flavoured things etc) on the 6th but the fairy lights and generic winter decs get another week. Anything to distract from the miserableness of January!

FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee · 01/01/2026 12:15

I like to take it all down before the new year.

Littletreefrog · 01/01/2026 12:18

New Years Day. Gets the house back to normal before we are back at work and school.

devildeepbluesea · 01/01/2026 12:20

Mine go up around the 11th Dec and usually comedown some time between Christmas and NY. Was feeling off colour this week so I took them down 7am this morning, waiting for the sun to come up before running with the dog.

RescueMeFromThisSilliness · 01/01/2026 12:21

Over this coming weekend, probably. Apart from the tree, there's a garland in the dining room, a Nativity scene on the hearth in the living room, a few odds and ends lying about and some fairy lights round the window. We also have a small conifer in the front garden that has lights on it.

I might take the cards down now, actually.

Candlemas

We will do it on Sat as it’s the best day for us with other commitments. I will miss the twinkly lights but gaining back some floor space will be nice!

K0OLA1D · 01/01/2026 12:27

Mine come down on the 28th. I keep them up anytime between 27th-31st normally. Never had them up New Years day.

Just what I prefer.

Epiphany (6th Jan). I bet the 28th people have had them up since end of Nov.

Nope. First weekend in December.

Pinepeak2434 · 01/01/2026 12:30

Mine will come down tomorrow if I find time. I always keep the tree up for NYE and NYD as we have another huge meal similar to Christmas Day on NYD - something my parents and grandparents always did.

Alpacajigsaw · 01/01/2026 12:30

We have ours up until 2nd or 3rd Jan. I find it very odd people put theirs up mega early in November and then take it down on Boxing Day. Each to their own however but I do think it’s weird

HelpMeGetThrough · 01/01/2026 12:30

Decorations went up in the 21st and then took them down yesterday. That was more than long enough.

Heyhelga · 01/01/2026 12:31

Came down on Monday. Would feel odd to me if they were still up in the new year.

NovemberMorn · 01/01/2026 12:31

12th night, we stick to tradition, sadly it's another one that's going by the wayside.
I think people who put heir decs up early November are probably sick and tired of seeing them by Christmas, that's why so many come down early.

RuthW · 01/01/2026 12:32

27th Dec

Meadowfinch · 01/01/2026 12:34

This year, the 4th. I'm back at work on the 5th.

I need a clean tidy start.

ohfook · 01/01/2026 12:34

I used to always do it on NYE. I didn’t like to have a big job, like clearing the decorations away, hanging over my head at the start of a new year. I’ve found though since my kids have got a little older, I worry that each Christmas might be the last ‘good one’ I have with them so I’m always a bit reluctant to bring the decorations down. I find it quite a sad job tbh saying goodbye to another Christmas so I’ve started leaving it a bit later now.

6th jan

menopausalmare · 01/01/2026 12:35

Today! New year, new clutter- free and clean home.

HollyhockDays · 01/01/2026 12:36

Today. We like a fresh start for the new year. Plus we are both back at work tomorrow!

lingmerth · 01/01/2026 12:38

Saturday they’ll come down.
Had flu all over Christmas and the lights and decorations have definitely lifted my spirits.

oustedbymymate · 01/01/2026 12:38

Mine are down. I’ve had enough of them!

Thingscouldntgetanyworse · 01/01/2026 12:39

I put mine up December 1st and took them down December 27th. That’s enough Christmas for me.
