I walk daily with the kids and noticed that on the 28th some lights had already been taken down. I thought it was a bit early but I suppose better to get it out of the way while you’re off, get ready for the new year etc. We were a bit disappointed though as there are some elaborate ott decorations and we love looking at them!
I usually take our tree down on 4th Jan or after but am thinking about doing it today as it’s so big and bushy it’s overtaking our front room. Plus collection stated to have it out the front by the 3rd.

Should we stay festive for a day or two? Or just get rid of it while I’ve got the motivation?!

Happy new year everyone x

Epiphany for us. Some small items I keep up until Candlemass

Epiphany

I’m not sure when we will take ours down. The tree is looking a bit droopy (stupid garden centre tree) but I am still enjoying it.
We only decorated on the 18th so in no rush.

Liftedmeup · 01/01/2026 12:42

12th Night in theory. But DH’s birthday is 6th Jan and he likes the decorations still up for that, otherwise it’s a bit bleak. We tend to keep some greenery and lights up till Candlemas on 2nd Feb, which is the medieval tradition.

Needmorelego · 01/01/2026 12:47

Next Monday I will take mine down.
Silently sobbing inside because they are so pretty 😭
Give it a couple of weeks though and I can build a Valentine themed Lego display 😂💖

tiddlerfan · 01/01/2026 12:48

I’ve just done it, quite like to keep it up until after NYE but on 1st Jan it’s my tidy and decorations away to start the year fresh!

Candlemas

Do you keep the whole lot up or just the tree ?
I quite like the idea of this ,i intend to keep my 'twig' tree up until January's over and i have fairy lights dotted around all year.

Inthewrongtimezone · 01/01/2026 12:51

Traditionally, Christmas is a 12-day festival, with December 25th being the first day.

When I was a child, pretty much everybody took their Christmas trees and decorations down on either the 5th or 6th of January - and the vast majority didn't put a Christmas tree or decorations up until at least the middle of December, often not until Christmas Eve. In the early years of our marriage, DH and I used to be decorating our Christmas tree on the evening of Christmas Eve. It was only when the children got older and started wanting Christmas stuff up earlier that we started putting it up a week before Christmas.

Over the years, things have changed and I see quite a few Christmas trees, fairy lights etc going up as early as mid November! I can understand people wanting to get rid of the tree after it's been in the house for 6 weeks, especially if it's dropping needles everywhere even if that means dragging it outside on Boxing Day! I should imagine they're glad to be rid of it by then.

Zov · 01/01/2026 12:52

Well, you always get the bizarre 'I've taken my Christmas tree and decorations down already, and cleaned through the house' threads on Boxing Day afternoon on here, which is utterly batshit IMO, and makes me wonder why they bother putting it all up in the first place!

On Boxing Day, we have a big buffet, and go for a lovely walk, and then 27th we often go out to the shops/the sales, then 28th, we will have a takeaway, and play board games and watch more Christmas films, the 29th we go see extended family who live 50-60 miles away.... Etc etc etc... Upshot is, no way am I taking the Christmas tree and decorations down on Boxing Day. It's not happening. It's still Christmas! And I am not cleaning through the fecking house on Boxing Day. 😂 I don't know anyone in real life who does this...

tl;dr, it will all come down on Monday. (5th January.) Christmas decorations, Christmas tree, and outside Christmas lights. Twelfth Night. We are still enjoying seeing them all. Our Christmas tree lights are twinkling away right now in the corner of the lounge. Smile

Planning to do it tomorrow morning, although would usually be around the 4th. We are going away tomorrow night until Sunday and can’t bare the thought of them still being up for DD going back to school on Monday.

bleakmidwintering · 01/01/2026 12:54

They are coming down Sunday morning as youngest will have gone back to uni and it’s the day we are both off to do it. I don’t stick to an exact date but I think taking them down before New Year’s Day when you’ve probably had them up since November is ridiculous.

Just the tree. I don’t have many other decorations any way. I get a good quality tree, get the base cut so it takes water well and lasts for ages.

6th Jan

PGmicstand · 01/01/2026 12:55

Probably end of the month. Tree and decorations didn't go up until late and I like looking at them.

Disturbia81 · 01/01/2026 12:55

Always NYD, clean start. I love Christmas but it doesn’t feel right seeing the lights after then.

Frenchfemme · 01/01/2026 12:58

Candlemass for me too - the tree (with anything overly Christmasy eg father Christmas decs removed) and some led trees.

menopausalfart · 01/01/2026 12:58

I take them down when I'm sick of them. My tree came down on Boxing Day. The rest will be removed today.

Sweetpeasontheplot · 01/01/2026 12:59

Usually I take them down on the 4th or 5th but I’m doing it today. Mix of it really being the only way time I’ve got due to work and not feeling very festive this year due to having a miscarriage starting on Christmas Eve. Hoping 2026 will start better than 2025 ended.

ChubbyPuffling · 01/01/2026 13:00

Ours come down by stealth... The cloth advent calendar was put away yesterday. The xmas card string this morning. There's a couple of "Merry Christmas " banners that will also come down today. The lights on the 2 trees in the garden will be this weekend before work starts up again. The fireplace etc, I will put away stuff on Monday. The tree on Tuesday.

We take them down on the 1 st and 2 nd January as part of our new year spruce clean. Done 6 loads of washing - cushion covers etc already. We do the sofa cushions throws dog bed etc very regularly but spend two days cleaning at new year xx

FancyCatSlave · 01/01/2026 13:06

We usually do 12th night but this year we are doing it early on the 2nd because the house is on the market and I need it cleared and deep cleaned before we go back to the office.

But in normal years it’s the 5th or 6th depending on how it falls. I hate them coming down early.

clinellwipe · 01/01/2026 13:11

Around the 27-28th because I’m sick of it by then, our house is cluttered enough with two young kids!

The one time I got a real tree in 2017 I couldnt bring myself to throw it away when it was still green and happy looking, so kept it in the living room until about June when it started to turn brown. I took off all the Christmas decorations and just had it as a random tree in the corner! I grew quite attached to the thing

Natsku · 01/01/2026 13:14

On Epiphany always. Its a day off so perfect for taking down decorations. Though I might take down the tree in DS's room today because its tilting more and more and looks to be in danger of falling and fixing it seems to be about the same level of effort as removing it.

1AnotherOne · 01/01/2026 13:14

I took mine down yesterday. I love a clean, fresh house for the new year.

You shouldn’t be doing any washing today! Let alone 6!
