I walk daily with the kids and noticed that on the 28th some lights had already been taken down. I thought it was a bit early but I suppose better to get it out of the way while you’re off, get ready for the new year etc. We were a bit disappointed though as there are some elaborate ott decorations and we love looking at them!
I usually take our tree down on 4th Jan or after but am thinking about doing it today as it’s so big and bushy it’s overtaking our front room. Plus collection stated to have it out the front by the 3rd.

Should we stay festive for a day or two? Or just get rid of it while I’ve got the motivation?!

Happy new year everyone x

DH would have them down on Boxing Day, my preference would be 6th Jan, we compromise. This year it will be tomorrow when grown up DC goes home.

Wannabedisneyprincess · 01/01/2026 13:17

I’ve taken ours down this morning, if we are hosting NYE it comes down before to make more space but we went out to celebrate but want it down before back to work tomorrow and school next week

NessShaness · 01/01/2026 13:18

Mine came down this morning. The house is lovely and clean now, almost like a reset for the start of the new year.

Joeylove88 · 01/01/2026 13:18

My tree/decorations all get put up on 1st December and generally all taken down on the 31st December ready for the new year.

Baconking · 01/01/2026 13:18

The most convenient day before back to school, so this Saturday for us

CywIarBach · 01/01/2026 13:26

Taken ours down today. We always take them down New Years Day, ready for clean house for the New Year.

TheOneWithTheGoat · 01/01/2026 13:26

Whatever date the first weekend of January is (as long as that’s not NYE because it would be the weekend after). So ours will come down this Saturday. They went up the first weekend of November.

ThirdStorm · 01/01/2026 13:34

Between Christmas and new year but before new year.

DanceMumTaxi · 01/01/2026 13:34

Taken it all down this morning, but will leave the door wreath until the 6th.

Rosamutabilis · 01/01/2026 13:38

I'll take mine down on Monday 5th. The garden waste collection is on Tuesday so I can get the tree chopped up for then. I only put mine up on 18th December so I'm still loving having the tree up.
I did have a door wreath from beginning of December as I went to a wreath workshop but I took that down on Christmas day and put it on my father's grave.

You shouldn’t be doing any washing today! Let alone 6!

Yes !
According to my mother in law it's terrible bad luck to do washing on New Years Day.

DrCoconut · 01/01/2026 13:44

It's ridiculous that a Christmas tree has to be out by 3rd for collection when the traditional day for taking them down is 6th (or even Candlemas). Of course people are free to do as they wish but services ought to accommodate people who follow traditional dates for things. I'm not saying they should wait until February as that is a real minority but 6th Jan is reasonable.

The 12 days of Christmas. Decorations go up Christmas Eve - you do the maths…

We celebrate Christmas from Sinterklaas to 27 December. Everyone has their own traditions - there isn’t a right or wrong.

Allbymyself123 · 01/01/2026 13:48

Growing up my mum did the whole “12 days before 12 days after” even if it was a week day.

As an adult i do weekends as it is easier & the kids like it up earlier so i always do 1st weekend in December not before so ours went up on 6th December this year & will come down on Saturday so 4 weeks. I like the tree up for new year & thats “normal” to me but also like it down & tidied & clear for the “new year” and schools etc going back so it’ll come down on Saturday & proper living room clean on Sunday and that’ll be us all set.

i’ve got neighbours who put theirs up early November & take them down on boxing day so i think nowadays its less about tradition and more about personal preference and now one bothers much what others do

LuckyNumberFive · 01/01/2026 13:52

27th or December every year. Hate it being up once boxing day is done.

Aposterhasnoname · 01/01/2026 14:10

Usually New Year’s Day, but took them down on Sunday the 28th year and I’m glad we did. We have a lot and it’s takes around four hours to get them all down and put away, and I’m really not feeling up to it today.

Hmmmmwineandchocs · 01/01/2026 14:12

Window stickers and smaller bits have been put away this morning, trees, garland and window lights will be put away on Saturday afternoon

Well, you always get the bizarre 'I've taken my Christmas tree and decorations down already, and cleaned through the house' threads on Boxing Day afternoon on here, which is utterly batshit IMO, and makes me wonder why they bother putting it all up in the first place!

On Boxing Day, we have a big buffet, and go for a lovely walk, and then 27th we often go out to the shops/the sales, then 28th, we will have a takeaway, and play board games and watch more Christmas films, the 29th we go see extended family who live 50-60 miles away.... Etc etc etc... Upshot is, no way am I taking the Christmas tree and decorations down on Boxing Day. It's not happening. It's still Christmas! And I am not cleaning through the fecking house on Boxing Day. 😂 I don't know anyone in real life who does this...

tl;dr, it will all come down on Monday. (5th January.) Christmas decorations, Christmas tree, and outside Christmas lights. Twelfth Night. We are still enjoying seeing them all. Our Christmas tree lights are twinkling away right now in the corner of the lounge. Smile

A lot of people are back at work on 27th and want the clearing up done whilst they have the time - not everyone is at home until early January. Others don’t have the space for the Christmas tree and their DC’s to be playing with their new toys.

Liftedmeup · 01/01/2026 14:51

The three kings/wise men bringing their gifts haven’t turned up yet! That’s Epiphany and why it’s still Christmas.

Yes !

I never do laundry on New Year's Day. My mother has always said "Wash on New Year's Day, wash someone in the family away". Obviously people in my family have died even if no washing was done on NYD, but I still can't bring myself to do it.

IDontHateRainbows · 01/01/2026 15:00

Usually the first full weekend after ny... so this weekend

Harlequi · 01/01/2026 15:01

I took the outdoor lights down yesterday afternoon (NYE). Latest I do that is NYD. I put them up on Monday 22nd, so they were up for 9 evenings in total. I don’t put up outdoor lights every year but when I do the max they are up is a week before and a week after Christmas.

Our tree is still up - will take that down at the weekend probably. It went up on the 22nd too, which was a bit later than usual for me. That is usually up a week before Christmas, but rarely up as early as two weeks before. I am usually keen to get the tree down NYD but as we put it up later I’m still enjoying it so happy to leave it an extra few days until the weekend.

Hatty65 · 01/01/2026 15:03

Roughly the 6th or when I can be bothered, but I certainly leave them up for several days after New Year. Just before I went back to school, usually. Now I'm retired I'll take them down i a few days probably.

For a couple of years during Covid I left them up til Candlemas like the Polish do because it was so miserable that they felt cheerier.

Kelticgold · 01/01/2026 15:03

After epiphany, so January 7th, but we put ours up around the 2nd or 3rd week of December.

Myblueclematis · 01/01/2026 15:03

I've just finished taking it all down and shoving back into the eaves of the house until next year. Took me quite a while, then had to vacuum all the glitter that was on some of the cards. House looks lovely and tidy now although a little bare.

The only thing still out is the wreath on the front door as I forgot that was there. I'll take that down tomorrow and put it with all the other things.
