When do you remove your Christmas decorations?

I walk daily with the kids and noticed that on the 28th some lights had already been taken down. I thought it was a bit early but I suppose better to get it out of the way while you’re off, get ready for the new year etc. We were a bit disappointed though as there are some elaborate ott decorations and we love looking at them!
I usually take our tree down on 4th Jan or after but am thinking about doing it today as it’s so big and bushy it’s overtaking our front room. Plus collection stated to have it out the front by the 3rd.

Should we stay festive for a day or two? Or just get rid of it while I’ve got the motivation?!

Happy new year everyone x

I have taken mine down yesterday but only because we are now away for a few days.

activetoday · 01/01/2026 16:41

Did mine today. I’ve hoovered through and everything is tidy again. Actually quite like that feeling, all ready for a new year.

rogueone · 01/01/2026 16:41

Every year I have waited until the 6th January before doing anything with decorations and trees. But for some reason this year I had an urge to remove loads yesterday: I had a need to have a clear space for New Year, also I started decorating early this year and got my tree earlier than usual too , my real tree wasn’t looking great and I wanted my lounge back together for new year: so I have kept my stair decorations and lights up and the display over the fire place but everything else has gone

Onefortheroad25 · 01/01/2026 16:41

They’ll be coming down Saturday or Sunday before the kids go back to school. Whichever day dd17 isn’t working so she can give me a hand. We put them up on the 5th I think.

Keepingittogetherstepbystep · 01/01/2026 16:43

Mines coming down on Monday but didn't get it until Christmas eve. Will put it in the back yard for the birds to play on for a while.

Wasn't planning on getting one as this year as things have been extremely difficult but the local shopping outlet decided to give some away. I'm thankful that I was able to get one and everyone I spoke to was so.kind and there was no judgement.

RightSheSaid · 01/01/2026 16:43

As soon as the kids go back to school.

DameOfThrones · 01/01/2026 16:43

Just finished taking mine down and now it's all bare and lacking sparkle 😭

I'd normally leave them up a while longer but it made sense to do it today, while me and DH aren't at work.

Cadenza12 · 01/01/2026 16:46

Today. Wasn't going to to but they suddenly had to go.

Topseyt123 · 01/01/2026 16:47

Ours went up a week before Christmas and I took it down today. It's now packed away in the under stairs cupboard for another year.

JaninaDuszejko · 01/01/2026 16:53

Tree collection is 10th January so I'll probably take down the decs that weekend. For various reasons the decorations didn't go up until 24th Dec so want to enjoy them for a few days when the visitors and parties have ended (hosted Christmas, Hogmanay and two birthdays in the last two weeks). Last year I kept my door wreath up till Candlemas, will probably do the same again.

BurntBroccoli · 01/01/2026 16:58

Mine will be the 5th as back to work in the 6th.
Decs were up a week before Christmas which is usual.

I remember a thread last year which said doing laundry on the 1st washed away your luck. I did a shit load on 1st Jan last year, and just assumed another old wives tale.

We had a horrible 2025, so just in case, and even though I’m not usually superstitious , the washing is staying in the basket until tomorrow.😁🤞

But I did just take the decorations down as I was feeling cluttered.

I’ve done washing every NYE that I can remember (disabled child, need to do a wash every day). We’ve had some good years, some average ones and some shit ones, so I don’t think there’s any link to my washing!

You know there aren’t actually any rules about it? Only traditions. And there are many Christmas traditions that people choose not to follow. I’m an atheist for a start 😂, so Christmas is a just mid winter festival here. We don’t have roast turkey, we don’t have Christmas pudding… I do like to keep my decorations up until after the New Year, because I like to, but nothing bad will happen if people take them down earlier!

Christmas is a time for family and togetherness. If it gets moved into advent then that meaning gets removed and it just becomes about manic consumerism (why do you think influencers are so vocal about removing secorations on Boxing Day? It's time to sell you the next thing). The quiet between Christmas Day and Twelfth Night is important and marking that by decorating for Christmas Day and keeping the decorations up for the whole Christmas period matters.

Matters... TO YOU.

We have had a lovely family Christmas. No stress, no rushing round. Lovely. We were all ready to see the back of the decorations by the 28th.

quirkychick · 01/01/2026 17:04

I put mine up gradually and then take them down gradually. I will leave the fairy lights, twig tree and wintry decorations up to cheer up the depths of winter, but take down the Christmassy ones.

Elle771 · 01/01/2026 17:05

I seem to be one of these scandalous people who puts them up mid Nov and takes them all down between 27th-31st ready for new year 😅🙈

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 01/01/2026 17:06

Down on the 30th this year as not home for NYE, I am so pleased we did as when we arrived home a couple of hours ago everything looked fresh and tidy & I can’t do sod all tomorrow. Which would be my usual day

People can have a lovely quiet Christmas, together with their family, and still take their decorations down before twelfth night.
I went back to work on Monday. So did DH. Ours will come down when we’ve got time. This year probably Sunday.

TimeForATerf · 01/01/2026 17:07

Took them down on Boxing Day, usually wait until the 27th 😀 they’d been up since 27th November.

No quiet between christmas day and 12th night here with working patterns im afraid!

People should be (and are!) Perfectly free to enjoy their family and home celebrations as and when they like!

It’s not a quiet time between Christmas and New Year for many as they are back at work and the Christmas celebrations are over.

Families create their own traditions for what works for them

Squirrelchops1 · 01/01/2026 17:09

I love my tree and am keeping it up until the 9th just to get through the first dark week back at work..

Might take off baubles and just leave lights on actually from sunday

StopThePigeonNow · 01/01/2026 17:12

Today as it’s dd’s birthday soon and also so dh can help me put everything in the attic before he works away.

TribeD · 01/01/2026 17:24

I'll start taking ours down tomorrow, and everything will be packed away by Sunday. I like to take my time, and do it by myself otherwise it all ends up a right old mess.

HurdyGurdy19 · 01/01/2026 17:36

Christmas was put back in the loft yesterday, 31st December.

For me, Christmas belongs at the end of the year, and not at the beginning, so I like everything gone before midnight strikes on 31st
