Stockings for 18+ children - nuts

Help me understand how this is a thing. My (25yr old) daughter’s boyfriend (31yrs old!) still gets a ‘stocking’ from his mum, even tho he lives with my daughter and won’t see his mum until a few days after. I buy all three of my children lovely presents, including fancy KC boxers etc. that others might consider stocking presents. But the stocking thing, full of tat, we haven’t done since they weren’t children. Is it just me that thinks only children should get stocking presents from Father Christmas?

No. Stockings are fun. Wet do them for everyone that is in the house that night, so I wouldn’t do one for an adult child who wasn’t staying over but if they are then yes. We don’t fill with tat though!

Last couple of year we have changed and now do them secret Santa style so everyone gets 1 sticking to make up. Adult children very happily join in.

Different families, different ways of doing things.
Doesn't harm anyone.

We stop when they move out.

ScaryM0nster · 20/12/2025 20:15

Fundamental part of the Christmas magic and spirit.

YABU.

So why not just give presents? Stockings are for chi/from Santa

I can't believe that you can't understand why it's a thing tbh.

It's just a collection of small presents presented in a fun way. I love a stocking. I love doing a stocking for adults as much as kids.

I get that it's not something you enjoy, but surely you can't actually need us to explain to you that different people like different things?

A stocking is just a fancy wrapping really, a way of presenting small gifts and a bit of fun. Don't do it if you dont like it but no need to criticise other people.

TootsMaHoots · 20/12/2025 20:19

I can’t understand why you think it’s so strange but you buy presents for your children. It’s just the presentation that’s different.

People do different things. It’s a part of the fun of new people coming in to the family.

deedee176 · 20/12/2025 20:19

With adults receiving stockings presents, how does that work when grandchildren or cousins/nieces/nephews come along? It’s nuts

I’m doing a stocking for my husband, he’ll do one for me. They’re not full of tat 😂 just cute things that fit in a stocking.

Gottagetfitin26 · 20/12/2025 20:19

I do them for mine (28 and 21), not full of tat at all, mostly useful things. Often consumables and a few proper things I know they'll like. They love them and say they are the best part of Christmas. My DD does one for me too now as well as her husband, who never had them as a child

Pineapplewaves · 20/12/2025 20:20

My DM stopped doing stockings as soon as she found out me and DSIS knew that Santa wasn’t real. I would love it if me and DP did stocking for each other but DP agrees with you, it’s just for kids.

ShesTheAlbatross · 20/12/2025 20:20

My MIL does one for anyone who wakes up at her house on Christmas Day, including her own parents and in-laws.
She hates doing them, I don’t know why she does it to herself.

ExquisiteDressing · 20/12/2025 20:20

You might think they are tat but that's very subjective because no one buys gifts thinking they are tat, they are things they think their adult DC will
like. Presented in a stocking. So YABU.

Mithral · 20/12/2025 20:21

Im expecting one from my mum and I'm 46 😬

Everyone gets stockings as they join the family. It's not rationed FFS.

My mum asked me and my sibling aged 17/19 whether we wanted bigger presents or smaller with stockings in future and we voted for stockings all the way!

I do them for DH and my parents each year now. They are the best bit.

LittleGreenDuck · 20/12/2025 20:21

Because it's fun. I had one until I moved out of home. I will do the same for my children.

Incidentally, what are KC boxers? Boxers with the King's face on???

Mossstitch · 20/12/2025 20:22

My 30-40s kids plus partners if have them and at mine for Xmas get them, my friend and I do them for each other, well not an actual stocking but a bag full of bits, we know each other well enough for it to be full of things that are useful and enjoyed not 'tat'! It's fun🤷

Anxietybummer · 20/12/2025 20:22

Honestly I think passing judgement like this about a family who do things differently to you is far worse than a parent giving their adult DC a stocking at Christmas.

SheSpeaks · 20/12/2025 20:23

You’d hate my house. My YA and teens are hanging stockings, writing “to Santa” and getting not just stockings but Santa presents. They will be tracking Santa on Christmas Eve too. No different to when they were smaller, but with a bit less manic excitement and a bit more nudge-nudge, wink-wink.

NosebleedsHHT · 20/12/2025 20:24

It’s just a different way of doing things. It’s not harming anyone. How do you know it’s tat? Even if you think it is it’s just a small tradition of that family. Through the year look out and you’ll probably realise you do something different to most families some other time.

Thingsthatgo · 20/12/2025 20:25

stocking presents are just small gifts. DH and I make a stocking for each other, the gifts are not tat - they are usually nicer versions of things we might buy for ourselves.
I one saw my very wealthy uncle put together a stocking for his new wife. It was exquisite!

SkinnyOatFlatWhiteForMePlease · 20/12/2025 20:25

If you wake up in my home on Christmas morning Father Christmas fills a stocking for you regardless of age. This year’s recipients vary from 1 to 68.
The stockings follow a simple method;
Chocolate orange in the toe
Socks
Book
Bath or beauty item
Favourite sweets
Random item (phone case, hair clip, earrings, travel mug, candle etc)

I buy bits as I see them throughout the year and usually have a rough idea of who will be staying with us in advance.

LighthouseLED · 20/12/2025 20:25

It’s never been part of my family’s tradition, and not something I’d like, so I just don’t do them.

Different people do things differently. It’s not “nuts” if everyone enjoys it.

orangewasp · 20/12/2025 20:25

In your family, stockings contained tat, were from Santa and for children. Other families do things differently. There's no right or wrong here.

deedee176 · 20/12/2025 20:25

Jeez. I’m an adult. 100% get anyone you care about lovely presents but to put it in a ‘stocking’ and claim it’s from the big man FC himself, hell no. Grow up.
