Stockings for 18+ children - nuts

Help me understand how this is a thing. My (25yr old) daughter’s boyfriend (31yrs old!) still gets a ‘stocking’ from his mum, even tho he lives with my daughter and won’t see his mum until a few days after. I buy all three of my children lovely presents, including fancy KC boxers etc. that others might consider stocking presents. But the stocking thing, full of tat, we haven’t done since they weren’t children. Is it just me that thinks only children should get stocking presents from Father Christmas?

We don't have stockings but do have gift sacks filled with all kinds of things from sweet treats to useful knick knacks for the office to shower gels - just anything goes.
Nothing is expensive but much of it is useful in one way or another. I also try and get one thing that is particular to the recipient - can be chocolate spread, pack of Monster crisps, sugar free treat, or something that just makes them laugh!
This is just something we have always done in our family and if we have any waifs and strays joining us they get a gift sack too. Some don't get it but others have introduced it to their families and it has gone down a storm.
Different families do different things like Xmas Eve boxes and Elves - doesn't mean they are wrong - just personal family traditions celebrating Christmas their way!! ☃

It’s a fun tradition the mother still does to show love for her child.

Jeez. I’m an adult. 100% get anyone you care about lovely presents but to put it in a ‘stocking’ and claim it’s from the big man FC himself, hell no. Grow up.

What impact is it actually having on your life?

Why do you think other families should do things your way?

Greenpeanutsnail · 20/12/2025 20:26

There’s something special about waking up to that soft weight on your feet and the crinkle of paper.

comfyshoes2022 · 20/12/2025 20:27

We all get them and not all the gifts are from Santa.

Thingsthatgo · 20/12/2025 20:27

I did think that this thread might be about putting together stockings for more than 18 children and deciding whether or not nuts are a suitable gift! Grin

AuntyBulgaria · 20/12/2025 20:28

I haven't done a stocking since my son was about 12. But then I'm a Christmas Grinch!

bettyboo9 · 20/12/2025 20:28

Why on earth would it bother you?? Other people’s traditions are ultimately none of your business. If it spreads joy, why would you need to go onto a public forum to make it out to be nuts? 🧐
Enough shit things going on in the world, without needing you to poke your unwanted finger at others

My adult DC refuse to give up their stockings. Just because it’s not ‘your thing’ doesn’t mean to say others don’t find them fun.

Ell099 · 20/12/2025 20:28

We do a stocking of small treats for guests staying over as well as kids & try and do things that will be used not just tat. My dad, sister and brother in law are here this year and in their stockings I have things like good coffee beans, fancier than normal shower gel, walking socks, a book, chocolate and a bottle of wine. It makes the “present opening” part of the day a bit more fun as often the adults only have one or two things to unwrap.

RessicaJabbit · 20/12/2025 20:28

My mum is 78 and gets a stocking.

sprigatito · 20/12/2025 20:29

We all get stockings in this house! Even my 85yo dad. His this year has got new banjo picks, humbugs, a bottle of chocolate stout, a coaster with a map of Dartmoor on it, some new fine paintbrushes, Parma violets, liquorice, a nice bottle opener, guitar strings, Christmas socks…along with the usual chocolate Santa, tangerine, nuts, chocolate coins etc. Why on earth would it be weird?! Adults can enjoy small surprises just as much as children!

Most people are describing the family traditions. Which as adults is clearly a gift from the people who bought them, not Santa.

Your attitude is horrible.

Redhairandhottubs · 20/12/2025 20:30

I stopped a couple of years ago when mine were mid twenties, mainly because it’s expensive to fill them with things that are not tat and a pain to wrap it all! I know lots of people who do still do them for adult DC though and don’t see anything wrong with it at all!

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 20/12/2025 20:30

Well, if you’re that grumpy about it maybe you’re on the naughty list and that’s why you won’t get one…

I’m 46. I will get a stocking from my mum. As will my DH and my children. And it will be lovely.

I don’t need to grow up. I spent 365 days operating as a massive grown up. I can spare 15 mins to marvel at opening a stocking.

Moonlightfrog · 20/12/2025 20:31

My dc are 19 and almost 22, we still do stockings, mainly containing their favourite snacks and anything weird and wonderful I have found throughout the year. My dc are still at home, youngest is severely autistic, she loves getting a stocking and it keeps her busy whilst I get a lie in (stocking are left outside their bedroom door). I think if dd1 moves out I will then stop. I never had a stocking as a child so now I make my own each Christmas 😊.

I always had nuts in mine when I was a child.

HansHolbein · 20/12/2025 20:33

If I go back home, my mum will do a stocking for me. I’m 34. My kids are 12 and 15, and I never plan on stopping if they are in our house on Christmas night.

ErmThisOne · 20/12/2025 20:35

We do advent stockings! So every adult and child gets a stocking with 24 gifts, one a day. Family member does them for us, 2 households, each house has 2 adults and 3 (some older teens). It has been this way for as long as I can remember. It would we strange for us to not have one.

Gifts are usually travel sized toiletries, tissues, hand cream, alcohol miniatures, chocolates and stationery etc.

SaulHudsonDavidJones · 20/12/2025 20:35

My DH and I do each other a stocking and it’s one of my favourite bits of Christmas. It doesn’t have to be from ‘Santa’. But who cares if it is. I’ll continue doing stockings for my kids too, even when they’re adults. Why? Because I want to.

Stompythedinosaur · 20/12/2025 20:37

Every single family does Christmas a bit differently. Getting upset because the whole world won't follow your personal expectations is crazy.

Live and let live, it makes no difference to you what others do.

TheFallenMadonna · 20/12/2025 20:44

I have had a stocking for all 54 of my Christmasses.

upstairsdownstairscardboardbox · 20/12/2025 20:45

If you sleep here, and put out a carrot and a drink, and believe in Father Christmas then you get a stocking. All ages.

dancingcs · 20/12/2025 20:47

My mum still does me and my brother a stocking. I’m 37 and he is 41! She does them joint with our partners now too. It’s so lovely. We love it!

Flightlessbirrd · 20/12/2025 20:49

My husband and I do stockings for each other....and the dog gets one too! It's harmless fun, why should it bother you?
