Stockings for 18+ children - nuts

Help me understand how this is a thing. My (25yr old) daughter’s boyfriend (31yrs old!) still gets a ‘stocking’ from his mum, even tho he lives with my daughter and won’t see his mum until a few days after. I buy all three of my children lovely presents, including fancy KC boxers etc. that others might consider stocking presents. But the stocking thing, full of tat, we haven’t done since they weren’t children. Is it just me that thinks only children should get stocking presents from Father Christmas?

Fuck me, what a shitty attitude to some fun.

In my house of adult children we all have stockings and even worse our pets have them too!

IggyAce · 20/12/2025 21:23

Santa has never brought stockings in our house my kids know they are from us. They have always been useful gifts not tat. Just accept that every family is different.

EricRedMoose · 20/12/2025 21:26

The other stocking stuffer I find really weird is underwear. Imagine receiving that from your parent/Santa Claus. It’s so creepy. I don’t mean to offend anyone but I’m from a culture that doesn’t celebrate Christmas so sometimes I don’t understand some of these “gifts.”

You’d hate my house. My YA and teens are hanging stockings, writing “to Santa” and getting not just stockings but Santa presents. They will be tracking Santa on Christmas Eve too. No different to when they were smaller, but with a bit less manic excitement and a bit more nudge-nudge, wink-wink.

Mine too!!!! We have just had huge excitement in the house this evening as the Elf that stole the last of DD’s lemon sherbett replaced them this evening alongside some quality street.

You can enjoy magic and imagination at ANY age.

Clefable · 20/12/2025 21:28

My mum did one for me until she died a few years ago (I am 40!). One of my fave parts of Christmas. She was such a thoughtful gifter.

Clumsykitten · 20/12/2025 21:32

It’s very odd that you would get so angry about other families having a slightly different tradition to you. It must be exhausting to get so angry about this kind of thing which has zero impact on you.

With adults receiving stockings presents, how does that work when grandchildren or cousins/nieces/nephews come along? It’s nuts

My mum never did stockings but my stepmum did/does she did me one until I had a child then the stocking was for them my siblings without children still get one and when they have kids they will pass stocking privileges on

Creepy?! Everyone wears underwear, what’s the mystery? My 21yo ds walks around in his boxers. I’ve been buying him underwear since he was out of nappies, it’s no different from buying him a hat. I’m not putting a leather posing pouch in his stocking 😆

Eyeshadow · 20/12/2025 21:36

Why does this upset you so much?

You seem jealous but I’m not sure why.

I’m an adult and always put my stocking up.

And you might fill a stocking with tat but not everyone else does.

He sounds like he has a lovely mum and it’s a lovely tradition that he’ll pass on his own kids.

deedee176 · 20/12/2025 21:38

I’m not in the slightest bit angry about anything and couldn’t agree more that people do things differently and good for them. Am finding the comments absolutely hilarious. Keep ‘em coming.

Jeez. I’m an adult. 100% get anyone you care about lovely presents but to put it in a ‘stocking’ and claim it’s from the big man FC himself, hell no. Grow up.

Did you only get coal in yours OP? Is that what's happening here?

Why give it as a “gift” though? What’s that all about? Why not buy underwear as and when needed during the year as any normal parent would.

Pinepeak2434 · 20/12/2025 21:43

If it makes him and his mother happy what does it matter? It’s obviously a tradition they still like to keep, I don’t see why it bothers you so much.

nopenotplaying · 20/12/2025 21:46

My eldest is 22 he still gets a stocking and opens it on our bed with all the children together. It’s tradition for our family and will always be. I’m surprised his mum didn’t make one up for your daughter though!

Creepy? I’ve bought my son, husband and my own father boxers and socks for Christmas over the years. It’s always a running joke that it must be time for Christmas when the socks and underwear need replacing.

I buy nicer and more expensive stuff at Christmas. It’s a bit of luxury, that’s all…what’s controversial about it?

WWomble · 20/12/2025 21:48

No tat in my girls’ stockings! Mostly useful stuff, new undies, stationery and toiletries with a couple of sillier bits for entertainment. Why? It adds to the fun and tradition and cos I love my girls and giving them gifts!

The2ndMrsMaximDeWinter · 20/12/2025 21:50

I'm 47, Dbro 45, and we still get stockings off our parents (who are almost 80).

It makes us all happy - the stockings we have always used are the hiking socks my nanna knitted for my dad when he was a teenager so lots of nice traditions going on!

shufflestep · 20/12/2025 21:51

My DSs are 25 and 23 and they still both get a stocking - a chocolate orange, chocolate money, shower gel, a few second hand books and a pair of Christmas socks. They get together and do similar ones for me and their Dad too. They'll sit on the end of our bed and we'll all open them together - main presents come later after we've been to church.

Whichone2024 · 20/12/2025 21:54

Also when I first read the title of this thread I thought it was going to be about what nuts should over 18’s get in their stockings 😂

Cando6 · 20/12/2025 22:00

Wouldn’t be much of a world if we were purely logical creatures would it?
Just finished doing the stockings for my three adult DC. Spent £70 ish on each of them. No tat. It’s one of their favourite parts of the day.
What do you do if you don’t have stockings and have a few small things? I’m not going to wrap up some fancy coffee or a chocolate orange or a pair of socks or a lip pencil or a paperback. That stuff goes in the stocking.

Pebbles16 · 20/12/2025 22:01

We did stockings right up until the end for our grandparents (parents and us as adult children). Then became too difficult a memory for a while.
But also when we were strapped for cash 4X £5 presents seemed much more exciting than 1X£20 and they were fun in a stocking mysteriously left over night... (post Midnight Mass and veg prep, Mum and I sneaked around the house).
It's a tradition and we have very ancient stockings so it makes us happy.

Yes same - underwear stocking is way better and the only time we got or give such luxury underwear 😍

JoWilkinsonsno1fan · 20/12/2025 22:11

Both my adult children get stockings as does my DH. We all got a stocking of my mum until she died (I was 44!)

They are full of things my kids like - such as body scrubs, their fav shampoo etc plus chocolate and their fav miniature gin!

Btowngirl · 20/12/2025 22:14

YABU - why does it matter lol. You sound competitive since you are mentioning gifts you buy. I doubt the 31yo thinks Santa left it on his bed 😆
