Stockings for 18+ children - nuts

Help me understand how this is a thing. My (25yr old) daughter’s boyfriend (31yrs old!) still gets a ‘stocking’ from his mum, even tho he lives with my daughter and won’t see his mum until a few days after. I buy all three of my children lovely presents, including fancy KC boxers etc. that others might consider stocking presents. But the stocking thing, full of tat, we haven’t done since they weren’t children. Is it just me that thinks only children should get stocking presents from Father Christmas?

Everyone in our house overnight gets one, including my parents when they stay. It’s not tat that we give.

CuriousKangaroo · 20/12/2025 20:52

I cannot fathom why this bothers you so much. Different families have different traditions. Bizarre that it makes you so angry! Do you not like the boyfriend? Or his mother? Is there some underlying reason you seem so annoyed about this?

deedee176 · 20/12/2025 20:25

Jeez. I’m an adult. 100% get anyone you care about lovely presents but to put it in a ‘stocking’ and claim it’s from the big man FC himself, hell no. Grow up.

You're being a bit weird about this - obviously adults don't genuinely think stocking presents they receive are from Father Christmas! It's just a fun tradition.

Netcam · 20/12/2025 20:52

We all have a Santa sack each with our presents in. DH and I (both 55), DS21 and DS18.

Whichone2024 · 20/12/2025 20:53

I never want stockings to end. :)

mummybearSW19 · 20/12/2025 20:54

Everyone who is in my house on Christmas morning gets a stocking.

Bluebubblepig · 20/12/2025 20:54

I still get a stocking and I’m 37…. It’s just small present… chocolate etc

RacingAcrossTheSofa · 20/12/2025 20:55

You don’t want to understand though, do you? You just want to go on about how everyone whose Christmas traditions are slightly different from yours are nuts.

You’re being totally miserable.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 20/12/2025 20:55

Things aren't 'nuts' just because they're not your preference. Of course they aren't telling fully-grown adults that their presents are from 'the big man'. It's just a nice way to present some gifts. Lighten up! Advent calendars used to be just children too. Now you can get make-up ones, beer ones etc.

Plumtreerd · 20/12/2025 20:55

deedee176 · 20/12/2025 20:16

So why not just give presents? Stockings are for chi/from Santa

Santa doesn't bring the stockings in my family. I'd never heard of that until I read it on here. As I got older, presents got smaller (but more expensive) and more likely to fit in a stocking so it worked for us.

If you wake up in my home on Christmas morning Father Christmas fills a stocking for you regardless of age. This year’s recipients vary from 1 to 68.
The stockings follow a simple method;
Chocolate orange in the toe
Socks
Book
Bath or beauty item
Favourite sweets
Random item (phone case, hair clip, earrings, travel mug, candle etc)

I buy bits as I see them throughout the year and usually have a rough idea of who will be staying with us in advance.

Edited

Can I stay at your house please? ☺️

So much rage about a stocking 🙄🤣

bettyboo9 · 20/12/2025 21:01

Maybe also look into the ethical production of Calvin Klein ‘boxers’ not KC, with it’s forced labour concerns and child labour. Not so fancy when you research the ethics whilst throwing scrutiny at the many, many on here who enjoy giving and receiving stockings. Nobody has mentioned giving tat! 18 also isn’t really the standard cut off age for people not believing in santa! 😳

MannersAreAll · 20/12/2025 21:05

Everyone staying here on Christmas Eve gets a stocking. I love it.

DH's Granny still does the shopping list for her children's stockings (albeit online now and with help) - she's 100 next year, her youngest child is 64 and she has great-great grandchildren now.

It's a lovely tradition in their family and I hope my kids continue it/allow it to continue as long as Granny, MIL and DH have.

No idea why anyone would get themself in such a lather over the fact other families do things differently. So bizarre.

We do advent stockings! So every adult and child gets a stocking with 24 gifts, one a day. Family member does them for us, 2 households, each house has 2 adults and 3 (some older teens). It has been this way for as long as I can remember. It would we strange for us to not have one.

Gifts are usually travel sized toiletries, tissues, hand cream, alcohol miniatures, chocolates and stationery etc.

What are the tissues for? Wiping their nose? What next? Toilet paper? Condoms? It seems so random, childish and silly. Wrapping up stuff simply for the sake of wrapping up stuff to reach the magic 24 number.

FancyLimePoet · 20/12/2025 21:11

So do I and I’m almost 40 😂

BabyLikesMsRachel · 20/12/2025 21:14

I think all families have different gifting traditions and neither is wrong or right. We only do stockings for our children, but I don't fill them with 'tat' because lord knows they don't need any more of that. We also only do stockings for each other, DH and I.

ErmThisOne · 20/12/2025 21:14

Tissues, we always carry tissues either in our bags or cars. I have a pack in my desk at work, a pack in my car and a pack in both my work bag and usual bag.

DD has a pack in her uni bag and a pack in her car.

DH has a pack in his work van.

They are things we all use. It is something mum wants to do for us all and we all love it. That’s what matters for us.

Shoes232 · 20/12/2025 21:16

Are you jealous of his family? I wonder if your daughter might prefer to spend Christmas with his family rather than you.

We always got Christmas themed or extra nice tissues in our stocking - some things were things you need anyway but a fun or luxury theme. One year we got Cath Kidson tissues - they were so pretty and I remember feeling so fancy lol
we have given tissues with cute snowman on the packet a couple times but it’s not one of our staples but maybe it should be because colds in winter lol

We do stockings in this house! Usually full of games and sweets

No one claims they're from father Christmas for adults in my house 😂. They are from mother Christmas... I.e me!

My 7yo gets his from father Christmas but he knows his older siblings ones are done by me as father Christmas doesn't visit adults

Sorry did quote or tag but my previous reply was to @EricRedMoose, it won’t let me edit.

Why are you so bothered?

Silvertulips · 20/12/2025 21:21

and claim it’s from the big man FC himself, hell no. Grow up

Grown up choose joy, the gift of giving, celebrating each other, watching loved ones open a surprise gift.

Aren’t we all Santa? Who makes the spirt of christmas? The people who brings others together?

I personally like the stockings the little thoughtful gifts.
