I haven’t seen one of these thread yet this year and with lots of “help need ideas for…” type posts thought might be useful, plus I’m nosy and love hearing what everyone has bought their DC

(misers, moaners and the “DC should only gets a resource book, pair of socks and a satsuma” brigade need not comment.)

Three teenage girls 14, 17 & 18 was in my element shopping for them this year if I’m honest.

I think that sounds like a brilliant Christmas for your girls OP! not sure a gift would last til the table in our house- the littlest one especially is like a gift seeking missile Christmas morning!

this is the first year my 6yo has asked for a big present- a Nintendo switch- and he’s so excited about it which has me excited to see him open it! He has other toys to open, bath bombs, books, clothes and PJs and is genuinely grateful when getting gifts but fully expecting him to go nuts for the switch!

its also the first year dd10 hasn’t really asked for one big thing, or toys for that matter, so she has a slightly larger volume (but similar spend) of skincare, make up, clothes, and books. I’ve got a few games- quite excited for her to open a murder mystery game. Odd inbetween stage of no toys but no big tech or designer items yet.

the dog has a decent sized sack of toys too, she is the baby after all 🤣

its DH I really struggled to find a gift for! I keep an Amazon wish list so his job is easy. he is so fussy I’ve never got a gift he genuinely loved that he didn’t explicitly choose. He’s got a few things he’d asked for (and sent links to) and then one thing I put a lot of thought into he’ll either love, because its for his hobby/passion, or hate because his likes are unpredictable 🫣

“Oh we don’t need riding lessons, we have our own horses…”
This just gets better and better!
I guess if you have lockable outbuildings, horses and the need for a Barbour jacket your kids won’t be expecting a B&M haul of bath bombs and sheet masks!
My feeling has always been that you buy what you can afford- if you have a shit ton of money, they get big ticket things. It’s such an individual thing. This is the first year I haven’t had to use a credit card and it makes me happy to be able to get my girls things that I couldn’t afford when times were a lot harder. I’ve had to save for it but after 20+ years of being pretty much hand to mouth as a single Mum, it’s exciting to have been able to put that money away for them.
Luckily, I have kids who expect little and always appreciate what they get, whether that was second hand toys years ago or the Nike trainers and AirPods I’ve saved for (or paid for over the next year!) The main thing is that we always have a lovely time together and it’s an honestly magical day- with or without spending a fortune.

I love this ❤️

It’s self explanatory in terms of everyone knowing what a table and a present is, but the “why,” is what people are curious about. I would have thought that to be obvious to you?

Well perhaps people shouldn’t get their what’s and why’s mixed up and we might all have a been a bit clearer on what was meant.

”Tell me about your table presents?”

”Why did you start doing table presents?”

“What kind of present do you give at the table?”

All suitable and polite ways of asking.

“What an earth is a table present is not”

Or perhaps people who start threads about presents on Mumsnet should be open to questions. If “what’s and why’s” bother you… I don’t think telling people how they should phrase their questions is going to do you any more favours, though. Hope that was polite enough.

dicentra365 · 18/12/2025 08:36

Im enjoying this thread
DS(15) is getting
a model train for his layout (can’t remember which one, it is second hand and he is going to repair it apparently, which is part of the fun) a couple of shirts, chocolate, railway book and magazines, more second hand books, Oxford diecast model again for his layout. Various Japanese snacks and toiletries in his stocking
Dd(10) is getting a small Douglas plushy, Schleich pony set, fidgets, books, paint pens, sol de janeiro set, chocolate plus various little stationary bits and snacks in her stocking.
Merry Christmas @Allromanticsmeetthesamefate and all.

oustedbymymate · 18/12/2025 08:40

We do table presents. Usually a little chocolate Santa for the kids and miniature drink like Bailey’s etc for adult. I mean it’s not iPhones but we do do table presents Grin

I think you’re missing the point, there was no why in the original comment which is why I chose to mock slightly.

It was a blatant judgemental response to something that was a just a slightly different variation on family traditions and how we choose to give gifts .

If posters are not adaptable enough in their own thought processes to realise that not everyone on MN does everything the same perhaps they should be considering if an open forum is the place for them.

OP I am glad you have got lots of presents for your DDs and hope they enjoy them. However in a struggling economy its a little insensitive .Every other post nearly is people struggling, or cutting basic essentials!I think its difficult not to spoil them ,but maybe reign it in a little? They need to manage later on as well.Uni is a big shock. as my DS found when he went shopping in LIDL for cheap cheese while there! Also later on as well, when they are married with DC or have to manage a mortgage on a single person's budget!

PairOfPennies · 18/12/2025 08:47

Neither of my kids ask for much if anything at all and some of what they get is stuff that is generally needed anyway. Everyone does Christmas their own way, but judging others really isn’t necessary. Hand wring over your single gift & the extravagance of sprouts if you must, but the thread is clearly titled so that those who may be offended can avoid. Like many, we have been through hardship, but we are now fortunate to be in the position to celebrate Christmas in a way that brings US joy. Personally, these threads have been great for ideas for past and future gifts.

Absolutely loving the fact the op has come on here to Brag, how insecure fo need to show off, with a detailed list of just how much you’ve bought everyone.

genuinely, I could do the same, I only say this to show fhere is no envy, we are also going on a long haul holiday for Xmas and new year, so can top trumps the op. But I cannot for the life of me, imagine starting a bragging thread about it.

Oh come on! OP has horses, plural.

I very much doubt her daughters will be sent off to uni with a hug and some tips on budgeting.

Many parents still support their children financially at Uni if they are able to and (gasp) help towards houses when they move out.

Do you think Prince William was searching the shelves of lidl in St Andrews for cheap cheese?

Exactly @TheGrimSmile It’s actually a miniature bottle and singular can of Rattlers that’s she gets to enjoy at special occasions like her sister.

My eldest DD had the odd glass of table wine too, bought a few drinks to take to parties from 16 onwards and she is lamest straightest student going so we are obviously doing something right!!

At 18 why wouldn’t she have table wine or any drink for that matter, I can understand from 16 too but 14 is too young in my opinion.

OP you can get snarky but those lists are insane. I can't imagine ever giving my kids so much stuff in one go. You must be able to see that your post is quite insensitive. There are thousands of posters on Mumsnet struggling to find the cash for one main present. There was really no need to share those lists.

100% agree. The problem is that if you start at that level you pretty much have to carry it on. Realising in their early childhood that your children don't need nearly as much of that to have a magical Christmas is pretty key.

This is a public forum @Grumpycowww
(love the user name btw!) it has members from all over the world and of many varying cultures and demographics posting about all kind of life experiences, privileges, lifestyles and choices. There is a shopping/style section, class debates, the jump of going from 2-3 children private V Grammar school debate and often a “how much do you pay your cleaner” thread.

If I want to post what I have got my own 3 wonderful, hard working DC with my own cash I am absolutely free to do so.

There is no contract, everyone is allowed to have fun of their own free will!! 😜

I did already explain up thread but you may have missed. It’s something that my parents did for myself and siblings growing up, a nicely wrapped gift at our table settings. It was always something “posh” a good quality chocolate tin, a perfume, a luxury bubble bath. It was the last present of the day and we really looked forward to it.

We have carried on for DD’s however sometimes I mix it up with one of their main gifts, ie their new phones. It’s just a really lovely way of keeping the excitement going throughout the day.
