I haven’t seen one of these thread yet this year and with lots of “help need ideas for…” type posts thought might be useful, plus I’m nosy and love hearing what everyone has bought their DC

(misers, moaners and the “DC should only gets a resource book, pair of socks and a satsuma” brigade need not comment.)

Three teenage girls 14, 17 & 18 was in my element shopping for them this year if I’m honest.

Yey a real person indulging their children at Christmas instead of trying to teach them lessons and be as frugle at possible. I.e the majority of mumsnet vs every single person I've met in real life 🤣🤣

ohpoowhatnow · 18/12/2025 09:42

Don’t listen to all the moaners! I bet your daughters will absolutely love everything and will be appreciative. It’s nice to spoil our kids at Christmas!?

Absolutely loving the fact the op has come on here to Brag, how insecure fo need to show off, with a detailed list of just how much you’ve bought everyone.

genuinely, I could do the same, I only say this to show fhere is no envy, we are also going on a long haul holiday for Xmas and new year, so can top trumps the op. But I cannot for the life of me, imagine starting a bragging thread about it.

amd I sit here smiling highly amused at the cringe factor.

I think the words you're looking for are "out-bragged"
CRINGE!

80smonster · 18/12/2025 09:45

Just me, or does this OP have a bizarre Adrian Mole quality to them?

PairOfPennies · 18/12/2025 08:47

Neither of my kids ask for much if anything at all and some of what they get is stuff that is generally needed anyway. Everyone does Christmas their own way, but judging others really isn’t necessary. Hand wring over your single gift & the extravagance of sprouts if you must, but the thread is clearly titled so that those who may be offended can avoid. Like many, we have been through hardship, but we are now fortunate to be in the position to celebrate Christmas in a way that brings US joy. Personally, these threads have been great for ideas for past and future gifts.

Whilst I find these threads very useful as a mum to a 10yr old DD myself, I also hate the veiled competitiveness of some posters as the thread progresses ~sigh~

LemaxObsessive · 18/12/2025 10:10

@AllromanticsmeetthesamefateYou bought a 14yr old child a bottle of liquor? Wow. Speechless

I agree, it just seems so off. The level of vulgarity and insensitivity is off the charts.
It’s not even an impressive enough list to brag about. If you’re wealthy you’re just going “meh” whilst cringing at this.

LemaxObsessive · 18/12/2025 10:17

Grumpycowww · 18/12/2025 06:58

OP you can get snarky but those lists are insane. I can't imagine ever giving my kids so much stuff in one go. You must be able to see that your post is quite insensitive. There are thousands of posters on Mumsnet struggling to find the cash for one main present. There was really no need to share those lists.

Absolutely agree, there’s a very sinister, yet insecure vibe to it all, isn’t there? I guess some people feel they need to buy their kids’ love & affection though. Let’s be grateful we don’t need to do this 💚

We do a Christmas Eve Box, stocking first thing, sack of presents, table gift at dinner and a last one hidden in the tree for the evening. Oh the horror! My parents did all of those things with us, apart from the Christmas Eve Box so it's not like it's a new idea for all those who've never heard of such things.

OP, my reply would take up too much space as I have 6 children who get all of the above. We're the only ones who buy for them so they have about 10-15 main things each, plus stocking. 2025 has been the worst of my life, and we're living on savings at the moment, but eBay, Vinted, Marketplace, voucher saving etc have saved the (Christmas) Day!

I'm sure you and your daughters will have a wonderful day.

Wanttobeok I appreciate that OP is wealthy with horses and so on.However many peoples circumstances can and do change . We still managed to support our Son financially. and also he had meals out when we visited ,went shopping with him and so on. Bought him his first car and paid for lessons .All I mean is a healthy value of money is good whatever your current status .Some of DS female friends didnt do any washing in the laundry but underwear in the sink and bought new clothes!

CometCupidDonnerBlitzen · 18/12/2025 10:36

Why are people acting like this thread doesn't exist every year on mumsnet? It's a staple of the Christmas board and lots of people find it super useful for ideas.

Nighttimeistherightime · 18/12/2025 08:02

“Oh we don’t need riding lessons, we have our own horses…”
This just gets better and better!
I guess if you have lockable outbuildings, horses and the need for a Barbour jacket your kids won’t be expecting a B&M haul of bath bombs and sheet masks!
My feeling has always been that you buy what you can afford- if you have a shit ton of money, they get big ticket things. It’s such an individual thing. This is the first year I haven’t had to use a credit card and it makes me happy to be able to get my girls things that I couldn’t afford when times were a lot harder. I’ve had to save for it but after 20+ years of being pretty much hand to mouth as a single Mum, it’s exciting to have been able to put that money away for them.
Luckily, I have kids who expect little and always appreciate what they get, whether that was second hand toys years ago or the Nike trainers and AirPods I’ve saved for (or paid for over the next year!) The main thing is that we always have a lovely time together and it’s an honestly magical day- with or without spending a fortune.

I think when you can afford plenty it’s important to try to stick to a budget or you can end up going overboard.

im also worried about setting a precedent. My DD is 3, so she’s getting 5 small ish presents in her stocking - a paw patrol toy, a frozen doll, a Yoto story book card, a frisbee and something else I’ve forgotten! Her main presents are the toy you get from Lapland UK (from Santa) an electric toothbrush and a grinch toy (from us).

littlest is 1, so will get a few soft toys, to make sure DD knows Santa came for our son too.

We don’t struggle for money but we do struggle for space! We don’t have toy storage in their bedrooms yet, so it will be easier in the future, but we are packed out in the kitchen and dining room and I’m loathed to have things permanently out.

As a bit of context my eldest is in her 1st year of university and youngest in her flat.

She is also the resident cook, regularly cooking a roast for 10 people among many other meals, she has had a PT job which she found easily as put herself on a barista course at 16 and has lots of experience and is regularly nagging at people to do their turn of the bins!

There is a lot off assumptions about my children based of what they are getting for Christmas..

Could it be that I have raised mannerly, hardworking and resilient DC that also get absolutely spoiled rotten at Christmas?!

Oh I am enjoying this thread. It's like a klaxon to all the MN types who just love to opine on this type of thread.
We've had the out-braggers, the ones offended on behalf of others ('some people are struggling' - note 'some' not me obviously but I will show off my virtue credentials by worrying about Them), the ones shocked at spending anything above £10, the ones showing off about their humble Christmases, the ones keen to share how little their children expect, the wide-eyed who just 'don't understand' how you can spend that much...
Have I forgotten anyone?

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 18/12/2025 07:19

That’s exactly how we do it @thebear1 last gift of the day and something to look forward to!

I know you’re going to snipe at me for this, but “something to look forward to”? Isn’t just being together, enjoying each other’s company, watching a movie, playing games, taking a walk, eating good food enough? Why do they have to have one final present to look forward to? Is that what your Christmas is about, just gifts? Stuff?

I’m so done with the commercialisation of Christmas, and posts like this infuriate me. Where are people posting lists of the things they “do” with their kids at Christmas, not just the “stuff” they are giving?

The fact they have to have a “table present” or whatever you call it to look forward to later in the day is not a healthy sign. Sorry.
