I haven’t seen one of these thread yet this year and with lots of “help need ideas for…” type posts thought might be useful, plus I’m nosy and love hearing what everyone has bought their DC

(misers, moaners and the “DC should only gets a resource book, pair of socks and a satsuma” brigade need not comment.)

Three teenage girls 14, 17 & 18 was in my element shopping for them this year if I’m honest.

“Oh we don’t need riding lessons, we have our own horses…”
This just gets better and better!
I guess if you have lockable outbuildings, horses and the need for a Barbour jacket your kids won’t be expecting a B&M haul of bath bombs and sheet masks!
My feeling has always been that you buy what you can afford- if you have a shit ton of money, they get big ticket things. It’s such an individual thing. This is the first year I haven’t had to use a credit card and it makes me happy to be able to get my girls things that I couldn’t afford when times were a lot harder. I’ve had to save for it but after 20+ years of being pretty much hand to mouth as a single Mum, it’s exciting to have been able to put that money away for them.
Luckily, I have kids who expect little and always appreciate what they get, whether that was second hand toys years ago or the Nike trainers and AirPods I’ve saved for (or paid for over the next year!) The main thing is that we always have a lovely time together and it’s an honestly magical day- with or without spending a fortune.

PregnantPumpkin · 18/12/2025 08:03

Wow that's a lot of presents, I bet you had a lot of fun buying them 😊
My little one will be 3 weeks old so other than milk on demand he probably won't want much!
But I've got him some of the Christmas 'That's not my...' books (second hand and think they'll be used for a few years) and he's got a Christmas outfit. Very excited to have our first Christmas with him.

Wiaa · 18/12/2025 08:03

@Phonicshaskilledmeoff it's the 5ft foldable one from Smyth's. Its a bit too big really but the 4ft was out of stock and it will last them longer

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 18/12/2025 07:46

I mean a “table present” is self explanatory I would have thought….

It’s self explanatory in terms of everyone knowing what a table and a present is, but the “why,” is what people are curious about. I would have thought that to be obvious to you?

AnotherVice · 18/12/2025 08:06

TheGrimSmile · 18/12/2025 07:26

Oh give over, a bottle of Baileys drunk responsibly is hardly going to turn her into an alcoholic. I used to have a bottle of Baileys or Advocaat at that age for Xmas and im not a raging alcoholic - in fact I don't drink at all now. The only alcohol I might contemplate is one glass of Baileys at Xmas time. It's more like a pudding than a drink.

Tell that to her immature liver.

FlatWhiteExtraHot · 18/12/2025 08:06

TenTenTenAgain · 18/12/2025 07:38

These kind of threads can be so contentious! I guess it pays to remember that some people use Xmas to set their child up for the year ahead whereas others buy and replace all year round and give small and fun gifts at Christmas.

We're definitely the latter , my youngest has a train set and some yoto cards and my teenage child has sparkling wine , chocolates , nail polish , perfume and money.

I’m sure your teen will be an alcoholic by Boxing Day with that sparkling wine 😉

blizymitzy · 18/12/2025 08:07

We have always done table presents too as my parents did with us.@Allromanticsmeetthesamefate
never done such extravagant gifts but I’m now feeling disappointed in myself that I haven’t !
this year it’s a mini ready made cocktail each as DD’s are all adults.
they will be so happy when they open their gifts.
have a wonderful Christmas

  • choc coins
  • costa voucher

big presents:
-pyjamas that might fit him - he is enormous and still mooching about in pjs of yesteryear barely past his knees
-British Museum membership - he works a few doors down from it

Butthechildrentheylovethebooks · 18/12/2025 08:09

I am in awe of those lists, had to Google a lot of it 😂. Your girls are very lucky and its completely up to you how much you give them, everyone has different budgets. Hope you have the best Christmas.

I was saying to my Dsis recently that we used to buy a ridiculous amount for our DC and I was a bit gobsmacked looking back at Christmas when they were little. My sis didn't deny that they had a lot but she said my DD and DS are so thankful and grateful for their presents and are not in the least bit spoilt. We loved going over the top at Christmas as we didn't really buy them much the rest of the year.

Might steal table present idea...😄🎁

Clefable · 18/12/2025 08:09

I think that sounds lovely, OP, your girls will really appreciate everything I am sure! Christmas is always a big thing in our house too, I love giving presents, and we budget for it the whole year so money is ready and waiting.

That’s wild! An iPhone is not a table present.
I can’t imagine what you’ve spent?

Given the OP said the iPhones were upgrades I don’t imagine they’ve cost anything much if she already pays their phone contracts.

Bully for you. I find competitive under-consumption far more nauseating than people buying their kids a pile of presents they can afford.

Autumngirl5 · 18/12/2025 08:14

Allromanticsmeetthesamefate · 18/12/2025 07:43

Exactly @TheGrimSmile It’s actually a miniature bottle and singular can of Rattlers that’s she gets to enjoy at special occasions like her sister.

My eldest DD had the odd glass of table wine too, bought a few drinks to take to parties from 16 onwards and she is lamest straightest student going so we are obviously doing something right!!

It all sounds lovely. Can I come for Christmas? 😂🎄

Got it in one!

Top tip for any young teenagers who will be needing/getting a mobile phone for the year anyway, take out a contract in December and every few years they will get a Christmas upgrade.

Always huge excitement in this house and makes a good table present (neat gift wrapping!!)

Ours are little so a few things in the stocking and a couple of other presents. We tend to just buy things as and when they need them (bikes, scooters, etc.). As they’re under 5, too many gets a bit overwhelming. Need to make the most of it before we get into iPhone/computer years!
