I haven’t seen one of these thread yet this year and with lots of “help need ideas for…” type posts thought might be useful, plus I’m nosy and love hearing what everyone has bought their DC

(misers, moaners and the “DC should only gets a resource book, pair of socks and a satsuma” brigade need not comment.)

Three teenage girls 14, 17 & 18 was in my element shopping for them this year if I’m honest.

Presumably OP is the sort of person who posts photos of huge glittering piles of presents obscuring the tree, 'he's been!!' posts showing bulging stockings (and sacks) on social media and then wonders why some of her friends are a bit cold with her?

Yuck, OP. Really tacky post. Transparent thread-starter in order to brag about how much you've spent on your children. And booze in a 14 year old's stocking isn't anything to boast about either. Still, I hope you all have a happy time (and that everything that you're replacing doesn't go straight to landfill).

A bit of a stretch from the OP's original post, don't you think? Still it gives you a chance to look down your nose at your imagined scenario based on absolutely no facts whatsoever.
Congrats on 'straight to landfill'. You forgot 'plastic tat' though I think.

You probably think YOU are being cold to people not realizing they all think you are the one being a twat.

A nice personality is what people look for in friends, being 'generous' has never viewed as bad, being honest also isnt either for the most part. No one has ever been 'I friends with x but shes just too giving'. However being 'bitter', 'judgey', 'jealous', 'accusatory', 'making stuff up' and 'pouting' definitely is seen as downsides to personality.

In case no one ever told you this before your opinions on other people presents/christmas really doesn't matter so sitting in the corner with a face like a smacked arse 'cold shouldering' all those having fun hurts absolutely no one but yourself.

My first read of one of these threads on MN and its been entertaining.
I will admit that the first post was pretty overwhelming for a newby. Each to their own though and I guess I understood the spirit of the thread the more I read on.

I realise now also DC gets gifts all through the year so may be something to stop with a plan to save those for Christmas and birthdays. Christmas buying is done now. There's a birthday in Feb and this thread has given me a whole host of ideas on what to get! So very useful overall.

Daftypants · 23/12/2025 16:34

the other adult child is getting 2 items of clothing from a shop that is UK based and she can’t get it where she lives

Boicsgoog · 24/12/2025 00:00

I love reading posts like this and getting ideas or just being nosey!

I too have 3 DD’s - 16, 18, 21 and I know I spoil them at Xmas. It’s hard when they’re so similar, I see something and think xxx will like that and end up buying it for all of them 🤦🏼‍♀️

We do a stocking, a pile of bigger gifts (used to do a sack when they were younger but gifts are much much smaller in size now they’re older. I also still do a Christmas Eve ‘box/bag type thing’.

Xmas eve: PJ’s, fluffy socks, face mask, hot chocolate spoons & M&S cookies this year.

Stockings:
I never did stockings when they were small. Just threw everything in one pile/sack. Now I absolutely love making them and see it as a bit of a challenge. All 3 have pretty much the same in their stockings. Mostly stuff they already use/need but nicer brands - fancy shampoo/conditioner, heat protector spray, choc orange, razors, lip balms, some P Louise bits this year, sleep/pillow spray, reusable make up remover pads, heartless curlers, scrunchies, micellar water, hair brushes, spot patches, that sort of thing.

Bigger presents in a pile:
They don’t have ‘main presents’ as such, not phones, laptops etc, they tend to be birthday gifts. All have similar things - a combination of what they’ve asked for and also some surprises - trainers, jacket, clothes, perfume, fancy skincare, fake tan. One is into running so she has some running stuff - shorts/tops etc, the other two have more make up - Charlotte tilbury etc.

I have always set money aside monthly to cover Xmas and would never buy what I couldn’t afford.

Someone mentioned Xmas traditions and that they are not often mentioned and it’s more about the gifts. Yes I prob do spoil my kids but we still have our Xmas traditions even though they’re getting older: Panto (nothing fancy, just a cheap and cheerful local one which they love), driving round to see Xmas lights in our PJ’s, nice Xmas meal in the run up to Christmas, putting the tree up together, visit to the garden centres to see all the Xmas decs, rewatching fave films or programmes with hot Chocs - the holiday, Gavin & Stacey Xmas specials this year. A new tradition we have started now they’re older - popping to the pub for a quick Christmas drink on Xmas Eve, only our eldest came last year but we might all go tomorrow! These are my absolute fave things to do and I hope we continue these traditions for many more years to come.

Merry Christmas everyone - whatever your budgets, choices, traditions - I hope you have a lovely time.

Gosh there's a lot of jealousy&envy shining through in some replies which isn't nice. Your lists sound amazing op and it's nice for others to get some ideas. I'm sure you aren't without worries in life. Financial stability isn't everything. Have a wonderful Christmas.

BauhausOfEliott · 24/12/2025 09:20

LoudPlumDog · 18/12/2025 14:02

No one should give alcohol to anyone under 18, it will affect their developing brain.

One Bailey’s miniature at Christmas will not affect anyone’s brain. HTH.

BauhausOfEliott · 24/12/2025 09:42

I don’t have kids but if I did, I couldn’t afford to buy that much stuff for them.

However, I really can’t see what the fucking problem is if someone who can afford those things buys them. It’s allowed. It’s not like the OP is looking down her nose ay anyone else, or suggesting everyone should be spending this amount of money.

In contrast, an awful lot of people who like to be frugal have immediately sneered at and judged anyone who prefers to go all-out. The ‘My children are delighted with an apple and some gloves and are thus morally superior to yours’ people come across as infinitely more braggy than the ones who’ve bought their kids a massive pile. The snobbery of the competitive under-spenders is appalling.

I would also add that the OP’s list of gifts consists of decent and useful stuff that her kids are clearly going to enjoy and get loads of use out of.

And I’m howling at the people who think one Bailey’s miniature is going to destroy a 14-year-old’s liver, brain and morality 😂

RollyPollyBatFace · 24/12/2025 12:11

@GlomOfNit I d love to do Christmas at yours! Sounds like it would be heaps of FUN 🤣
