I haven’t seen one of these thread yet this year and with lots of “help need ideas for…” type posts thought might be useful, plus I’m nosy and love hearing what everyone has bought their DC

(misers, moaners and the “DC should only gets a resource book, pair of socks and a satsuma” brigade need not comment.)

Three teenage girls 14, 17 & 18 was in my element shopping for them this year if I’m honest.

Phew all done, looking at this I think there is a gap in my youngest DD’s sack (like to keep things equal) so I’d love to read what you have all got your DC.

I really spoil my girl (14) at Christmas too - she is SUCH a good girl, and she doesn't get much for the rest of the year, but I buy throughout the year to facilitate it without ruining myself! She's also had a shitty year, with her grandad getting very ill and her lifelong BFF dumping her out of the blue. Can't remember it all as have been buying and wrapping it from June, I think. But there is:

Manga/anime:
Various books, merch and t-shirts of her favourite series and characters, including a couple of cheap models, a cushion and a blanket.

Squid Game:
Socks and top trumps.

Her favourite musician:
T-shirt and poster.

Clothes: (can't buy her much as she is particular, but stuff to wear in the house is fine)

Soft Primark fleece, and some (second hand but lovely) PJs and big fluffy dressing gown thing with frogs on it.

Warhammer:
Paint set and medium sized figure.

Also remember wrapping some Japanese sweets! Think that's it - gosh that is a lot! She is worth it, tho.

My brother has got her a record player, and mom has got her a sewing basket and some more manga books and merch!

Sadly there are wide differences in wealth in our country, and most people give their kids as much as they can at Xmas, so I don't think it's necessary to judge someone clearly wealthy, for buying their kids quite a lot. Probably most of us would if we could. I am by no means rich, tho fortunate to be better off than some, and I save and look for bargains etc to give DD the best Xmas I can, and one part of that is selecting gifts I think will delight her!

VegBox · 19/12/2025 23:36

I always like these threads. DD8 is getting:

  • a Switch
  • Harry Potter Lego Switch game
  • various books
  • Harry Potter board game
  • a couple of craft kits
  • red panda pyjamas

Stocking:

  • EUGY model wolf cardboard kit
  • cat top trumps game
  • Harry Potter craft kit
  • Fantastic Beasts book
  • Lush bubble bath stuff
  • a chocolate mini selection box

My family have got her some Lego, clothes and books.

I always worry about spoiling her, so I try to keep it limited, but I also recognise that that's easy for me to say because she has a pretty comfortable life all year round.

All can say is "why". You seem to have gone overboard with your presents. I have a neighbour who buys a similar amount of presents for her family and a few weeks later most of it is binned or on Facebook marketplace.

caringcarer · 20/12/2025 03:06

I've never heard of a table present before. No one I know does this. It can't be very common. I think you can give kids too many gifts.

mathanxiety · 20/12/2025 03:20

Grumpycowww · 18/12/2025 06:58

OP you can get snarky but those lists are insane. I can't imagine ever giving my kids so much stuff in one go. You must be able to see that your post is quite insensitive. There are thousands of posters on Mumsnet struggling to find the cash for one main present. There was really no need to share those lists.

Amen to that!

I'm sure I'm not the only one here wondering what the budget was for all of that.

mathanxiety · 20/12/2025 03:33

FlyingCatGirl · 19/12/2025 11:24

Most people won't posts lists because the OP posted the world's biggest brag! Not many people can compete with three kids getting thousands of pounds of designer goods and new phones for Christmas!! That post was obviously going to make a lot of people feel embarrassed or uncomfortable. The OP posted it wanting envy and admiration! She knew it would make most people feel too embarrassed to post! I bet she's insufferable over Christmas on social media!

Or perhaps people suspect their much shorter lists would be greeted by the OP with an accusation of trying to show her up with ostentatious frugality.

I posted my far shorter list, but it is still everything dd wanted plus a little more. Npthing to do with money either way. The op posted a lovely reply and passed no comment on quantity. I think the different Christmases and gift lists are interesting to read about.

Itnisna thing though...we've had them in our family since the 70s!

Yes my mum and my gran both did table presents. It’s not a new invention.
My gran usually did jewellery such as a pair of earrings or cufflinks. She had little boxes that she reused every year.
My mum did a Lego set or a book usually, always wrapped beautifully with ribbon.

Yes, we just have small gifts like ... Novelty kitchen timers, fidget toys, a small chocolate box, pack of cards or similar.

This is such a classic MN response and really the root of all judgement…

You do realise @caringcarer that there is a big Ol’ world outside you (AND everyone you know) who do lots of things very differently

@genesis92 yes it’s really tricky to spend a few hours on a Saturday afternoon at my laptop ordering gifts, I managed to pull through though.

@Allromanticsmeetthesamefate , is this from just you and partner or all family and friends

Rosti1981 · 20/12/2025 13:15

DD almost 15:
2 tshirts from The Spark Company with slogans i hope she will like
Some H&M clothes - leggings, jumper, waistcoat and shirt
A mini watercolours set
A graphic novel she wanted though not sure it will arrive in time (all she actually asked for, she knows it was coming from US though and said Feb birthday is ok if not!)
A game for Switch

DS almost 12:
A lego game
A warm base layer top as going skiing in Feb with scouts
A radio to listen to planes
A game for Switch
Commercial aeroplanes top trumps cards

To share: 2 extra Switch controllers.

They also got horribly spoilt as I got a Nintendo Switch 2 in Black Friday but officially this is "mine" but I let them use it - it is just not allowed in individual bedrooms and needs to stay in a family area.
I will probably top up with some sweets and a tangerine of course!

They don't really ask for anything - but that said they do get quite a lot the rest of the year (or rather I see a game or book and tend to just get it) so I'm not sure that says very much! I struggle to think of ideas at xmas and they both have birthdays in the new year.

Rosti1981 · 20/12/2025 13:18

They also have stuff coming from grandparents (e.g. ski goggles, sunglasses etc) that is hopefully relevant and they like- this is part of the thing as a parent, I end up giving my ideas to others!
I also got them xmas pyjamas in early Dec. These get worn year round (they still wear last years and I keep / pass down from one child to the other) so not as wasteful as it sounds.

Wait, so your family Don't by any presents even the ones you called big presents are from santa. For us the amount of presents per child you listed would be from all family and santa only brings stockings

Wanttobeok · 20/12/2025 13:58

Santa brings all presents (those that have been bought by parents) here too. Seems like an unusual thing on mumsnet but it's how my parents did it 🤷‍♀️

Presents from friends and family go under the tree.

All can say is "why". You seem to have gone overboard with your presents. I have a neighbour who buys a similar amount of presents for her family and a few weeks later most of it is binned or on Facebook marketplace.

The majority of OPs stuff is one use consumables.

Will the wrappers go in the bin/recycling? yes like all waste packaging

They are going to USE the sweets, bath bomb, hair masks, drinks, moisturiser, sock, body sprays etc... and do you REALLY think that 'in a few months' they will have put their new Iphone on facebook market place or in the bin?

Don't be utterly ridiculous.

Also why are you going through your neighbors bins? I have NEVER been able to comment on what a neighbor is throwing out unless its a special collection item like a sofa or fridge freezer. I don't have x-ray vision to see through bins and bin bags.
