I haven’t seen one of these thread yet this year and with lots of “help need ideas for…” type posts thought might be useful, plus I’m nosy and love hearing what everyone has bought their DC

(misers, moaners and the “DC should only gets a resource book, pair of socks and a satsuma” brigade need not comment.)

Three teenage girls 14, 17 & 18 was in my element shopping for them this year if I’m honest.

Phew all done, looking at this I think there is a gap in my youngest DD’s sack (like to keep things equal) so I’d love to read what you have all got your DC.

That is an absolutely ridiculous amount of gifts. Do you not work? I don’t know how you have time to physically plan and buy that amount of stuff

Do you not buy your kids food, clothes and toiletries because its too much work?

Honestly instead of being 'appalled' at the amount has anyone bothered to read OP list, its all pretty practical useful stuff just nicer versions of everyday stuff.

How on earth would it be any harder to 'think' to buy Nike socks than no brand socks or to throw some extra sweets in with the weekly shop?

caringcarer · 20/12/2025 03:06

I've never heard of a table present before. No one I know does this. It can't be very common. I think you can give kids too many gifts.

You cannot possibly know what 'everyone you know' does. What you mean is 'I have never done' and thats fine but your very limited experience of a topic does not the whole world make.

The majority of OPs stuff is one use consumables.

Will the wrappers go in the bin/recycling? yes like all waste packaging

They are going to USE the sweets, bath bomb, hair masks, drinks, moisturiser, sock, body sprays etc... and do you REALLY think that 'in a few months' they will have put their new Iphone on facebook market place or in the bin?

Don't be utterly ridiculous.

Also why are you going through your neighbors bins? I have NEVER been able to comment on what a neighbor is throwing out unless its a special collection item like a sofa or fridge freezer. I don't have x-ray vision to see through bins and bin bags.

I don't need to go through other people's bins. My neighbour shares her info as she is very chatty. She buys designer gear and is open about the fact that it is sold on by the recipients within a month or two.

All can say is "why". You seem to have gone overboard with your presents. I have a neighbour who buys a similar amount of presents for her family and a few weeks later most of it is binned or on Facebook marketplace.

Why oh why do some persist with this MN myth that everyone (apart from the virtuous poster of course) 'buys 'mounds of tat' and 'sends it to landfill' after Christmas?
It has gathered momentum over the past few years and it seems to have reached peak this year. Many, many posts with wide-eyed MNetters begging others to be more like them and not buy 'loads of tat' which will be thrown out immediately.
It's all nonsense. I know it has been said on this thread that you can't possibly know what everyone does, which you can't of course. But I will say that I quite literally no no one who does not keep their decorations in the loft or garage and bring them out every year. And to suggest that people spend money on Christmas bedding, towels etc and throw them out is ludicrous.
A lot of the 'filler' items on these lists, as pps say, are consumables, which will be used, eaten or worn, so what's the big deal?
I have no idea why people keep the 'straight to landfill' myth alive but I think it is probably so they can preen themselves over how virtuous they are reusing things (ie like everyone else does) and virtue signal at the same time.
Any post like this just attracts them like a klaxon, outdoing each other on how outraged they are when the reality is they are probably at a completely different life stage to the people posting the lists they are so 'appalled' by.
Nonsense, but oh so predictable.

I’m just reflecting on a few years when my SIL bought obscene amounts of presents for her two boys. Earlier that year she had found out her husband had been having a long standing affair and she was compensating and in competition with her X. We all just looked at the great mound of presents on Xmas day aghast. Unfortunately it seemed to set the trend for them expecting her to fund them financially and they went into adulthood and she ended up selling her house, moving into a box in a crummy part of town and handing over her cash to them.

This would be my concern.
What a sad ending for everyone.

What this excess creates is entitlement/insatiable appetite for presents.
For me Christmas is forgotten and moved on to how many presents, positive parenting equates to number and value of presents.
So not doing this may be perceived as failure??

I also see that the OP of this thread chooses to become annoyed with anyone with an alternative opinion/view however it can be good to hear others who contribute and not tell them to leave the thread. It may be good to reflect on how this feeds into the commercialisation of Christmas.

I also wonder if their friends parents cannot afford this, what pressure this creates for them and the wider impact.
It would be good to stand back from this and reflect.
I looked at the lists in disbelief.
However If OP is excessive indulgence so be it.

Rosti1981 · 20/12/2025 13:15

DD almost 15:
2 tshirts from The Spark Company with slogans i hope she will like
Some H&M clothes - leggings, jumper, waistcoat and shirt
A mini watercolours set
A graphic novel she wanted though not sure it will arrive in time (all she actually asked for, she knows it was coming from US though and said Feb birthday is ok if not!)
A game for Switch

DS almost 12:
A lego game
A warm base layer top as going skiing in Feb with scouts
A radio to listen to planes
A game for Switch
Commercial aeroplanes top trumps cards

To share: 2 extra Switch controllers.

They also got horribly spoilt as I got a Nintendo Switch 2 in Black Friday but officially this is "mine" but I let them use it - it is just not allowed in individual bedrooms and needs to stay in a family area.
I will probably top up with some sweets and a tangerine of course!

They don't really ask for anything - but that said they do get quite a lot the rest of the year (or rather I see a game or book and tend to just get it) so I'm not sure that says very much! I struggle to think of ideas at xmas and they both have birthdays in the new year.

@Rosti1981 could you tell me more about the radio that listens to planes? Is it to listen to pilots/air control? What brand did you get and where from?
Sorry to bombard you with questions, I have an aviation obsessed 10 year old who would love something like this!!

You do an awful lot of wondering on a thread purely asking parents to list what they have got their DC for Christmas and help fellow parents with ideas.

I wonder upon reading my OP if you should have thought “yup not for me” and scrolled on by rather than speculate on my life, parenting, children, my children’s friends and anyone/anything else you decided to throw judgment on.

Touchy no. Frustrated, perhaps that a bunch of moaners, misers and complainers can’t just use their executive functions and scroll by when read something that doesn’t interest them.

I mean you must have got so much satisfaction announcing your disinterest in a thread you were disinterested in.

Well I went completely overboard this Christmas... DD is nearly 2. In our house we do something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read, something to do and something to share....but I epically fudge it (the categories are more to keep me focused !) . She doesn't have family apart from me and her grandad so this is everything she will get. I will definitely do less next year (I fear I shall say this every year)!

Stocking
Small paddington teddy
Toothbrush & strawberry flavour toothpaste
Sand timer (for teeth brushing)
Her first pack of hairbands
Go find it Scavenger hunt cards
Tiger who came to tea Book mark
Expandable flannel for the bath
Kikkerland Kaleidoscope
Satsuma
Letter from santa

Presents
Santa- 5ft parachute, teddy bear (one of my childhood ones passed down)

Want - gruffalo floor puzzle, orchard toys word game
Need - early reader books (50 book box set), phonics cards (she loves cards!)
Wear - ballet outfit, ballet shoes & small maileg mouse in ballet outfit
Read - Angelina ballerina box set (continuing the theme 🥴) and story orchestra book
Do- Connectix
Share - tic tac toe, lotto game

Her grandad has also got her some books
Godparents - colouring book, sticker book, crayons, fairy wings, a couple of books and a dress

I managed to get quite a lot second hand or massively reduced. I know it's all things she will love and use. Saving outdoor toys for spring/summer for her birthday in march

Honestly, I read the presents for teen girls and have no idea what they are! 🤦

Your girls are very lucky. You have bought them lots. As long as gifts are used and appreciated then it's all good imo

The story orchestra books are lovely
Your daughter will love them.
The sand timer for teeth is a great idea - might steal it!
Which scavenger cards have you got?

Something that wasn't done in my family was the stocking. We had one but we just hung them up and I've done the same this year with my DD who is two in early next year, maybe I should start a new tradition by filling them 🤔😂 I love the table present idea! When I read yours I just think "wow so much self care stuff I still to this day don't use anything and just use a basic moisturizer" 😂😂 I think if my DD likes all this stuff in the future I'll need some serious help 😂😂 my DD is loving all the lights this year and keeps saying Santa 😂 we have her:

a wooden kitchen with wooden food and an apron
LOTS of figures (she's obsessed lol) anything from teletubbies to Pokémon 😂
A sit on scooter than converts into a standing one
Etcha sketch type thing!
Lots of crafts stuff which she loves

I actually can't remember most of it as it's been wrapped since October 😂 will be a surprise for us just as much 😂

Us adults it's mostly edible presents 😂😂 but also a 1% club quiz book!

I don’t even moisturise lol 😝

OP I like these threads even though we don’t buy as much but that doesn’t bother me I just feel happy for others and I just like reading the lists and getting ideas.

i feel we don’t get a high number of gifts but we do focus on quality. We do a stocking and one wrapped gift from Santa, and one main gift from us. The rest are from siblings and other relatives. (We let kids choose something small/medium from each other until they start earning and buying themselves so this gets less for us as time goes on).
We have a big extended family so they get from them too, often clubbing together to get something higher value or experiences rather than lots of little things. They do the same as us and focus on quality and things get passed down and around the family a lot so everything gets very well used!
I once basically got called stingy on here but we do it this way as I said because of big family, and it means if they want something like a games console then they don’t expect anything on top of that. Those years extended family would buy games/gift cards for consoles etc.
some people also thought I was mean for putting toothbrush in stocking but we’ve always done it that way for all the extra sweets and chocolate lol.

Bluedenimdoglover · 20/12/2025 21:23

Maybe a charity gift, as well, would be a nice idea - something like those cards you buy where the cash goes towards running water for a family, or education for girls. They went down very well with my niece and nephew. They actually took them to school to show their teachers
