I haven’t seen one of these thread yet this year and with lots of “help need ideas for…” type posts thought might be useful, plus I’m nosy and love hearing what everyone has bought their DC

(misers, moaners and the “DC should only gets a resource book, pair of socks and a satsuma” brigade need not comment.)

Three teenage girls 14, 17 & 18 was in my element shopping for them this year if I’m honest.

Can we stop saying “table present” like it’s actually a thing. Christmas Eve boxes are bad enough, we don’t need more 😂

It is "a thing", you've just never heard of it. We don't do it but I know families that do and have done as long as I can remember. Usually the kind of families who may spread gift opening throughout the day.

Lemonyyy · 19/12/2025 13:50

To be fair my parents have been doing table presents since I was little, I don't think it's a new fangled thing! We usually do jewellery or some sort of little techy gadget, it's nice and a little talking point.

My lists are definitely not as long as the op's but I reckon we all know that there's always going to be someone who spends more on Christmas than you. When my kids were babies I was buying second hand, scraping it all together and now I have more money it is nice being able to spend a bit more without feeling like I have to cut corners all the time. I hope anyone struggling now will come to a place in future where they don't feel like that anymore, and op I hope your kids love their gifts and appreciate how lucky they are that you are so generous.

My lists:

DS9
Pokemon action figures
Donkey Kong (for nintendo switch)
Lego ninjago dragon
Marvel infinity gauntlet pack
Pokemon battle deck
Individual pokemon cards (as he requested)
Magic the gathering cards
Card binder
MTG playmat (card games obviously the big thing this year)
Set of Onjali Rauf books
Drumstick squashies, selection box, choc orange, choc coins

DD11
Weighted blanket
White fox Hoodie
Babysitters club graphic novels 8-15 (she had the fist 7 last year)
Money towards a laptop (laptop was outside of budget but she has been saving really hard this year and with Christmas and then birthday cash she should be able to order it to have on her birthday in Feb)
Vinyl stickers
Fishnet tights
10m measuring tape (a weird one but she's quite handy and has a lot of screwdrivers etc and this was a gap in her toolkit lol)
A mascara and lipgloss
Pimple patches
Daise shower foam
Reese's pb cups, selection box, choc orange, choc coins

DD15
New phone (a dire need as she trod on her old one in October and has been using an old spare which no longer supports whatsapp since!)
Mini guitar amp and cable
Guitar tuner
Billie Eilish perfume
Billie Eilish tshirt
Striped long sleep top
Fabric pens
ChuLo Japanese soda
Eyeliner
Lip balm
Sundae shower foam
Pimple patches
Nerds gummy clusters, selection box, choc orange, choc coins

We did spend about the same on each of them, I despair at how expensive pokemon/MTG cards are as that's what my DH is having too! 😂

cinders222 · 19/12/2025 13:58

With regards to all the debate and arguing I never understand on these threads why people get so upset how other people spend their money / have different traditions.

I like to treat my daughter at Christmas (more than some will spend, less than others). What difference does it make to others.

People spend their hard earned cash in different ways. I like buying gifts and we like to travel a lot. But me and husband drive normal type cars and shop in mainly high street stores. ( others might spend their cash on high end cars, high end designer fashion and not travel as much). Everyone is different.

We don't do a table present but do a Xmas Eve Box. Which is the same wooden box that DD has had since she was 2. That gets one small gift in it, chocs and Xmas pjs for her and dog and slipper socks. And her the dog and the cats Xmas Stockings to hang up. As well as her nice certificate and plate and glass to leave out for Santa and Rudolph.( These are same ones since she was 2.) We still put out plate etc although she obviously doesn't believe and it's a lovely xmas tradition for us. The same as it would appear is the Table Present for Op.
I just don't understand why people get so outraged by people doing things differently from them.

If people saw how many toys I had bought the dog for her Xmas Sack then they really would be clutching their pearls. Yes the dog gets a stocking and a sack.

HarshbutTrue2 · 19/12/2025 13:59

I have spent more than usual this year - rather than give it to Rachel Reeves.
I am not posting my lists, but it is the usual something you want, something you need, something to wear, something to read. A few experiences in there such as Mystery Tours.
However, I have not stretched myself to 40 or 50 presents per person. I think that is a bit OTT. I'm surprised that people can afford it in the current economic climate. I hope posters aren't going into debt in order to buy presents. I hope the horses don't end up being sold on quickly - I have seen that happen often enough.
As a bit of a change, could posters tell us what/how much they got as a child? And how things have changed. I had a very happy childhood. I wanted for nothing. My parents were wealthy in comparison to our peers. However, they were not extravagant and I was happy with what I got. It will all be forgotten by mid January.
Two of my biggest presents were a dolls pram and a dolls house - in different years. The pram was left out in the rain, the hood went soggy, the cover got lost.

Alpacajigsaw · 19/12/2025 14:06

God I’ve spent what I thought was a lot on my 2 but I’m feeling quite stingy 😂

youngest has a monitor and a new phone, t shirt, hoodie, stocking - he’s 17

eldest is 19 he’s got a dash cam, shoes, hoodie, beanie, t shirts, backpack, wallet, stocking

off to flying tiger and primark tonight for a couple of extra stocking gifts

Best surrprise we ever gave our kids was 2020 so during Covid, had been a shit year for everyone. We told our kids things were tight as I’d been made redundant (true) and they got phone upgrades and a stocking. They were delighted bless them.

Unbeknown to them I’d managed to get a PS5, they were like gold dust as just out, extra controller and games. When we trooped out to the car to go and see family (standing outside!) my H pretended he’d forgotten something and brought down the PS5 from the loft so it was sitting waiting in the living room for them to open when we got back. They were absolutely gobsmacked. I’d got a new job and had some redundancy cash spare and it was nice to treat them :)

Two of my biggest presents were a dolls pram and a dolls house - in different years. The pram was left out in the rain, the hood went soggy, the cover got lost.

My parents were working class factory workers, so we were not well off but both parents always worked so we had what we needed. We got lots of gifts at Xmas. I was youngest and can remember getting a huge barbie house with dolls etc one year. And when older had the tech of the day, gameboy, Atari, Walkmans etc. My dad will give my daughter £50 - £100 at Xmas. Only buys for kids. But gave me a very significant amount of money when my mum passed away.

Husband experience is similar with parents money, present giving. His mum spends a lot on my DD and us at Xmas and will spend £1000 - £1500 on us at Xmas.

We are very lucky with the childhood that we both had and how generous our parents are.

With regards to economy I have not been hugely affected by it. I own a modest house but I own it outright with no mortgage. Have 2 new cars. One we bought outright and other is on PPI. So have one modest car payment and no mortgage. Obviously spending more on shopping etc but both I and husband have had not bad pay rises so its not to bad.

We like to eat out and travel a lot so if the need arose we could easily tighten our belts by cutting down on those areas.

2 year old boy
We're doing two Christmases because both sets of grandparents are visiting for a week each

In both stockings:
Search and find book
Hot wheels car
Snap / flashcards
Wiggly track piece for his train set
Stickers
Kinder egg

1st stocking:
Lidl bin men and lorry (for train set)
Toy traffic light
1st Main gift : remote control tractor

2nd stocking:
Aldi croissant plush
Water wow book
2nd Main gift: brio cargo boat and bell

Tried to keep it small because everyone will want to take him toy shopping!
If he doesn't get them from grandparents I'll probably buy stepping stones and a learning light box in the sales too.

MuddlingThroughLife · 19/12/2025 14:56

I personally love these threads and even the ones where you list EVERYONE'S gifts you have bought - kids, parents, siblings, grandparents etc.

For me it's not about showing off or bragging about how much or how little has been spent. For me it's about sharing ideas and getting excited for the big day.

I haven't shared my lists because I don't fancy the bashing afterwards.

Absolutely agree, there’s a very sinister, yet insecure vibe to it all, isn’t there? I guess some people feel they need to buy their kids’ love & affection though. Let’s be grateful we don’t need to do this 💚

Oh my goodness. That’s a very cruel thing to suggest even if the OP is coming across unfortunately.

All my girls have different, each given for their 1st Christmas, DD1 is the longest maybe around 2 and half ft but it has an inner lining so looks bigger than it what it actually is. DD2 is patchwork and was homemade by my sister it’s lot shorter and wider, DD 3 is also home made it’s a lot shorter than the other two but because it’s been crocheted it’s VERY stretchy and probably holds the most, any excess goes into their sack (pillow case sized) and any excess of that just sits around with bigger presents.

All a nod to my own childhood where we had one of my dads very long kilt socks as a stocking and a proper Christmas pillowcase.

Kilt sock Stockings! I adore that idea, I wonder if my mum still has my dads or if they were hired, he passed a couple of years ago and this would be a lovely way to remember him at christmas.

Also, only now reading through the thread, we're poor but I love the lists from people who can afford to go all out, too damn right I'll do the same for mine if we ever have the means!

housethatbuiltme · 19/12/2025 21:04

Katypp · 19/12/2025 10:58

This is a good one, which manages to be nasty, patronising, superior and braggy at the same time.
With extra points because they haven't even got kids yet so are Building a little fantasy life about what fantastic parents they will be. We've all done that!

Yep also 'kids' do NOT go bragging at school, by the time schools back most little kids have forgot last weeks excitement (+ it will be some random little thing they proudly 'tell' about if ask at school, not the £60 dolls house it will be the tiny tub of slime in their stocking or something) and teens understand it based on family income.

MN proves that with just how many people are 'flabbergasted' to find out people have different traditions they have 'never heard of'.

If kids actually talked we would all have figured this out as small children and there would be no 'wait you use a pillow case instead of a hockey sock and leave it on the bed?', 'eh, I never heard of xmas eve box do people really give presents on christmas eve?', 'whats a table present?', 'I never knew people did stocking AND sacks', 'omg, some people don't wrap presents???' etc...

housethatbuiltme · 19/12/2025 21:40

FlyingCatGirl · 19/12/2025 11:12

My partner I have never wanted kids! I'm not dreaming about kids, that life is your thing not mine! Do you think you sound like good parent material? You are being very abnormal about a very logical comment that says don't make other parents feel inferior or other kids feel like shit by bragging! How are you not human enough to understand that! It's decency! Out of interest, have posted nasty retorts to all the posters on here that criticised the bragging or did I trigger your hateful predjudices by admitting I don't have kids?

You have such a wonderful childfree life that your on a parenting forum, criticizing parents for buying their kids gifts at Christmas.

Your actions are not aligning with your words.

I certainly know back when I was childfree and traveling I didn't have the time, inclination, thought or connection to be searching out parenting forums to start arguments calling parents 'bad' for post Christmas gift lists in a Christmas forum.

What lead you down this path to this moment right now? Its so very far from your self proclaimed path, feels like you got lost and are angry about that.

Your opinion on other peoples families means nothing, it wasn't asked for or needed yet you where still rude enough to be here inserting yourself on other people traditions to say you know better and you joined up to a forum designed for mums to do it which is really odd.

And yes, non mams can join/post, I know many people planning on being mams join parent sites before trying, some join after losing pregnancies and some forums/posts also aren't child related so people might have googled a house or legal topic etc... and joined to respond but its a 'very logical comment' to think why did you even think not just to to seek out a parenting forum but also a thread focused on kids presents if you are a proud non parent.

Why feel the need to post telling everyone your not a parent and disapprove of parents doing nice things for their kids. That's like buying a ticket and going to a gig of a band you hate just to heckle them. You wasted your own time and made yourself look silly JUST to be mean on something that doesn't effect you at all.

Love reading what others have bought. I think if I had the money and space and wasn't working full time I could easily get carried away and buy loads. But DS is 5 -I asked him what he had for Christmas last year and he can recall one thing so I think we are still in the stage that they don't really remember but I'm sure he will remember his grandma coming to visit for Christmas (we are abroad) and he loves family time. No idea what Christmas Eve box is, or table presents or sack.

DS5 - Stocking is a big one, same one I had as a kid.
Squirty foam soap
Bath bombs
Colour change bubble bath
Bath slime
