Does anyone else buy themselves presents for Christmas?

I've found that over the last few years I've taken to slipping a few treats away for myself. Its not that I don't get anything at all, but it tends to be a couple of small practical bits. Does anyone do the same either because no one else is buying for you, or just because? So far this year I have some lounge wear and a magazine subscription starting in January - I can't be the only one and if so what have you got?

Me! It will just be me and DS on Christmas Day so I've got myself a nice pair of pyjamas and the sali Hughes selection box from cult beauty. Oh, and a small but very fancy box of chocolates. Challenge will be not opening them before the day ☺️

Needmorelego · 04/12/2025 22:40

I buy loads for me 😁
I like a lot of Christmas things that are for use before the actual 25th.
Things like tree decorations, crafts, seasonal Lego sets for display or Christmas set novels.
They're my favourite bits of Christmas but to get the enjoyment and use I need to get them before Christmas Day.
So I just buy them 🎄

Yes me, it’s just me & DS I have no family, I’ve bought myself presents since my marriage broke down. Means I always get a little something I want & DS thinks I’m on the nice list too 😇

Peclet · 04/12/2025 22:49

I do. Wrapped and under the tree! Always have.

highly recommend.

Screamingabdabz · 04/12/2025 22:50

Yes I insist on no presents at all from DH because the whole time I’ve been Christmas shopping for the fam I’ve bought things for myself that nobody else would’ve even considered. I love it! One for them, one for me!

EasilyRemedied · 04/12/2025 22:52

I’ve never done it but I think I may start after reading this thread 🎁

ShodAndShadySenators · 04/12/2025 22:52

I do, but I buy them and leave them where DH will find them. So if he wants to give me something he can wrap items that he knows I've chosen for myself, like specific books. DS isn't great at presents yet so he can be steered in a helpful fashion. So far there's a bundle of books and a new bottle of perfume that John Lewis were price matching. I don't wrap them myself (even though I love wrapping), they're just there in case either of my family can't think of anything for me.

I'd rather do it this way and know I'll end up with stuff I'd really like than not bother and not get anything nice or suitable. I get a lot of positive vibes from buying decor and making the house look lovely and festive, and buying treat food that we wouldn't normally have. Anything to help the winter go past really

ItsFridayIminLoveJS · 04/12/2025 22:54

Yes l do. Something to wear...
Usually a new coat and boots.
Something to do... A new jigsaw.
Something to eat... Chocolate.
Something to use.. A new soup maker.
Also had my bedroom decorated and a new carpet for it.. plus new curtains a new duvet and 3 new duvet covers.

Tryingatleast · 04/12/2025 22:57

Yes! I’ve found that my wishes are way too specific and sound ott asking for them so I make a mini list of must haves and buy them when I’m doing Christmas shopping so I don’t notice the cost!!

mazedasamarchhare · 04/12/2025 22:58

Yes! Ever since my parents died as dh isn’t really into Christmas. I buy myself a couple of things in the January sales, wrap them up, put them away and then dig them out and put them under the tree, I’ve normally forgotten what it is, so I get a nice surprise, my kids think it’s hilarious that the label says to me from me!! It’s normally a book, something scented like posh soap / candle/ perfume etc and something practical (last year it was a poaching pan as dc love poached eggs!)

MamaClausToTheRescue · 04/12/2025 22:58

Yes and I also buy myself a present on each of my children’s birthdays. Woohoo for them they are another year older and congrats to me on carrying and birthing them. They’re my achievement too so damn right I deserve a gift.

Springflowersyay · 04/12/2025 23:00

My DH is an excellent present buyer.
This year I want a pair of glasses to wear for sport.
But I want to choose the frames and I know my prescription, he doesn’t, so seems pointless for him to get them for me, as I’d essentially just be asking for the money.
So I’ll get them for myself and think if something ends that is an idea, but he is able to give a bit of creative thought to.

purpleme12 · 04/12/2025 23:02

Yes I do. My child started putting a few presents for me her list for Santa a few years ago now. She's not done her list this year but hopefully she'll still do it this year. So I bought myself some presents from Santa! I was very happy!

dicentra365 · 04/12/2025 23:09

Oh this is lovely! - I'm glad it's not just me who does this😀must admit part of the reason for the thread was feeling a little guilty like I shouldn't be getting anything for myself, especially at such an expensive time of year.

Oh god yes .. I think it started a few years back when I came across the bargain thread here fir Christmas and ended up discovering bargains I liked from the list eg Sapling vodka, Elemis etc etc

This year I have bought 2 magazine subscriptions and a couple of books

Everintroverte · 04/12/2025 23:18

I do too, marriage broke down a few years ago and he was rubbish at buying gifts so I always sorted my own. New partner isn't very good either and gets stressed, told him not to worry about birthday and Christmas for me and just get my own.

Inspired by the person upthread who also buys themselves a present on the kids birthdays, doing that next year now too!

TheFormidableMrsC · 04/12/2025 23:18

I save all year to have a splurge on myself and not at the expense of anybody else. It’s not that I don’t get lovely gifts, I do, but some things I want to choose myself and I wait for Black Friday discounts and buy things I absolutely wouldn’t at any other time of the year. I’ve put them all aside and will enjoy opening them on Xmas morning.

Ariela · 04/12/2025 23:20

Yes, I bought a pink tartan jacket in Joe Browns. Is great and just my thing, fits right in with things I already have. Nobody else would buy that for me, so I thought I would, given I've not really spent much on clothing (maybe a pair of jeans and a tshirt, and a couple of nice bit from a charity shop, under £100 total anyway) all year, and as I lost a bit of weight over summer all the old stuff still fits.

oneinataxioneinacar · 04/12/2025 23:23

Yes!
I realised it took all the pressure out of what other people got me if I had treated myself to a few bits. It means I can just be grateful rather than thinking what I wish they had got (husband and parents can make some fairly odd choices!)

This yes I have bought myself some Christmas scented candles, a really beautiful cashmere scarf and some earrings

Oh I love this idea!

mondaytosunday · 04/12/2025 23:25

Yes. I’m a widow since my kids were very young so for years if I didn’t buy myself something I wouldn’t get anything. Not necessarily something for under the tree (I’ve bought myself flower subscription, a bespoke rug etc). Now my kids are older (one working minimum wage job and living away, the other at uni), they buy me gifts but they are not going to be more than £20-25. It’s nice to have something to unwrap though!

SwedishEdith · 04/12/2025 23:29

I have done. There's loads of little things I just wish people knew I wanted but they often get something close but not quite right. Something like silver hoop earrings. If I buy something for myself, it'll be perfect.

eurotravel · 04/12/2025 23:30

dont we all ?!?

wavingfuriously · 04/12/2025 23:32

just to balance the thread..no presents, no tree, no decorations but do buy a nice bottle of wine or spirits🍷for moi and pig out on chocolates for most of December. confirmed spinster ☺️

Mumofoneandone · 04/12/2025 23:44

Yup, do most of my own present buying for my DH to wrap and give me. Various reasons but mainly get worth while presents. Just easier all round. My mum and DD always find me lovely surprise presents, so don't loose out totally......
