December 1st breakfast

IF you do a special breakfast for today, what do you have? My kids are teens but we have our friends children staying with us at the moment who are younger, due to a family emergency, and they cheered up when we mentioned we could do this.

We are having,

🎄 Pancakes shaped like snowmen, Xmas trees and Rudolf with smarties, chocolate chips, strawberries and blueberries for decoration

🎄 Snowman crumpets

🎄 Grapes and blueberries made into a Christmas tree

🎄 Banana and strawberries made into candy canes

🎄 Milk in bottles decorated to look like snowmen

🎄 Hot chocolate and marshmallows

🎄 Chocolate coins

🎄 Advent calendars (chocolate and Lego)

I decorated the dining table late last night so it looks very festive for them and our friends children’s elves are with us!

Just wondering what you’re doing because I’m nosy and maybe I can steal some ideas.

I've never heard of a special breakfast for 1st December. Sounds like a big old faff before everyone gets off to school/work.

TiredCatLady · 01/12/2025 05:43

What an absolute faff. That’s also a shitload of sugar to pump into them before school.

This is the Christmas section and I clearly said ‘IF’ you do a special breakfast for today. You don’t so…..erm……🤣

These children are my closest friends children and they’re going through a bad time at the moment, I’m willing to have a ‘big old faff’ to make them feel a little bit happier at the moment because I love them. It’s really not much effort anyway, we usually make porridge, eggs, pancakes for breakfast and have fruit etc.

c'mon now @ChristmasHasCome is this really a secret humble brag?

You can not be in the UK, surely 🙈

Do you work?

HelloDaisy · 01/12/2025 05:47

That sounds lovely. My go to for a special breakfast would always be pancakes for kids, or scrambled eggs with/ salmon if older.

See above.

And one is too young for school and the other two are off school at the moment due to family circumstances, which school have authorised, so we’ll be the ones dealing with any sugar highs. They’re very calm kids, even after sugar, so don’t worry about that. 😉

We never did it when ours were little but a friend did I was always envious of how she could be bothered.
It’s a lovely treat for the little ones seeing as they’re away from home, very thoughtful of you.
You are a good friend.

WonderingWanda · 01/12/2025 05:48

That sounds lovely op. We usually have something like that on Christmas Eve, I like the fruit candy cane idea!!

UnimatrixZeroOne · 01/12/2025 05:47

Do you work?

I do, but I’ve had to book a week off to help my friend out and have her children. My kids and partner will be making most of it anyway whilst I get the kids up and sort out pets out.

Wherever did you get the idea that this was a thing to do?
I've never heard of having a special breakfast on the 1st of December, is it something you've seen on social media?
My children are grown up but I've got an 11 year old granddaughter who's never had anything like this either.
What a huge faff on a school day. Plus not the best things to eat at the start of the day, huge amount of sweets.
Children usually think being allowed to have an advent chocolate at breakfast is a treat in itself.

FridayFriesDay · 01/12/2025 05:52

I think this is lovely, especially because the children are going through a hard time. Their faces are going to light up when they see the table and imagine how special it’s going to make them feel.

You’re a great friend and an even better aunty. These children are going to remember this difficult time when they’re older, but they’ll also remember your love and this absolute treat you put on for them.

I hope you all have a great December the 1st breakfast together. It sounds incredible x

Thanks. Yes my two will be sticking with eggs and pancakes.

Humble brag. Fucking hell if you knew what these kids were going through it’s certainly nothing to brag about. And it’s a few pancakes, crumpets and fruit dressed up a bit differently.

UK yes.

We did ours yesterday as it's more fun for us when we don't all have to rush off early like we do in the week. We had star shaped waffles from m&s, with Nutella, squirty cream, raspberries and strawberries.

Thanks. My teen looked up a few ideas that we could put together and found them so she’s in charge of those.

I think some people from AIBU have got lost. This is the Christmas board and OP clearly starts with an IF.

Good idea.

The children have only arrived with us at lunchtime so too late to do it today. No school for them at the moment anyway, I’m off work this week, partner works at home and our kids are older and not in college til lunchtime tomorrow so we’ll have plenty of time.

Ah that’s such a sweet thing to do for your friends children. I’m sure they’ll be delighted and it’ll help them feel at home in your home.

Must ask tho where do you all find the time to make eggs and pancakes your usual breakfast? Im impressed!

MinnieMountain · 01/12/2025 06:03

No, but I like these ideas for Christmas Day. DH and his parents have pork pie, which I find too heavy first thing.

snowibunni · 01/12/2025 06:04

I always thought it sounded like aively idea but it was never a tradition with us. We tend to have a breakfast like that the Sunday prior to Christmas, purely because of time constraints. At least after eating all that you won't have to provide food for rest of day as they will be stuffed!

No not social media. It was from a sign in our local shop and I thought the children might appreciate it being as they’re away from their mum and dad.

Again, i did write ‘IF you have a special breakfast today’, so I’m not sure why you have come on here to judge but I hope you feel better for it.

I love a porkpie, but for breakfast might be a bit much even for me.

Having said that when we came home from midnight mass we would have warm pork pie and crisps ( and open a present each)

Ah, thank you. Thats such a lovely thing to say, especially after certain other ones. You have to wonder about humanity when trying to do something nice for 3 little children, away from home and their parents, who are feeling sad, is somehow twisted into a bad thing. Never mind, it says more about them than anything I’m doing but thank you for your kindness.
