December 1st breakfast

IF you do a special breakfast for today, what do you have? My kids are teens but we have our friends children staying with us at the moment who are younger, due to a family emergency, and they cheered up when we mentioned we could do this.

We are having,

🎄 Pancakes shaped like snowmen, Xmas trees and Rudolf with smarties, chocolate chips, strawberries and blueberries for decoration

🎄 Snowman crumpets

🎄 Grapes and blueberries made into a Christmas tree

🎄 Banana and strawberries made into candy canes

🎄 Milk in bottles decorated to look like snowmen

🎄 Hot chocolate and marshmallows

🎄 Chocolate coins

🎄 Advent calendars (chocolate and Lego)

I decorated the dining table late last night so it looks very festive for them and our friends children’s elves are with us!

Just wondering what you’re doing because I’m nosy and maybe I can steal some ideas.

I don't think so. I'm just trying to point out that a special Christmassy breakfast doesn't have to be wall-to-wall sugar. Surely we're all concerned about children's health and can see that obesity is a growing (in two ways!) problem? Yes, one meal won't make a difference but it's part of a pattern. This special meal would be a great occasion to show that fun eating isn't all about sugar.

No it's not a great occasion to show this. Not at all. The occasion was to show them some love and kindness. The breakfast wasn't about nutrition it was about comforting them and creating a positive memory at a very difficult time. Sometimes these things mean more than the perfectly nutritionally balanced meal.

BeAmberMember · 01/12/2025 13:45

Just looking at the title I knew this would bring out the MN fun-sponges.

It's a lovely thing to do OP!

Have you seen Elf for a how to do Christmassy breakfast?!

😱😱😱 But the sugar! How dare you post this and be such a bad influence…now I need to pop to the cafe and get myself a piece of cake 😁

Yerdug · 01/12/2025 13:47

What in the merry hell is this nonsense? A Christmas breakfast three and a half weeks before the actual day? Put the idea in the bin, along with that fucking elf and Christmas eve boxes.

snoopythebeagle · 01/12/2025 13:48

BatshitOutofHell · 01/12/2025 13:21

Some people commented that they thought it was a bit weird. Just their opinion. And for some reason Op and others took it to heart. As though we should all think it's great.

The other thing is that many of us had never heard of such a ritual and are annoyed by yet another money spinning ritual concocted by retailers.

There’s a different between finding it a “bit weird” and being downright rude, unkind and unpleasant to someone who was just trying to do something nice.

Didn’t any of you watch Bambi growing up?! If you can’t say something nice, don’t say anything.

I’m not wholly convinced that The Christmas Board is the place for you.

FFS, I'm actually getting pissed off on OP's behalf about the sheer number of people who A) can't be arsed to read all the OP's posts (you don't even have to read the whole bloody thread) and B) can't just scroll past a post in the CHRISTMAS section that they don't have any interest in.

I actually think maybe @MNHQ should step in and add a post to the top of OP's because all this misery really is bringing down what should be a lovely thread.

I’ll join you in being pissed off on OPs behalf - the number of, frankly, miserable gobshites who seem to be enjoying taking a pop at someone doing something festive!

As I posted before, I spent an extra 3 minutes on my sons breakfast this morning as I wanted to kick off advent with a fun breakfast - if you don’t, fine, but people can do what they want. I didn’t feel pressured by societal expectations, that this was another thing I ‘had’ to do…I just wanted to. Same as I don’t want to do the whole elf thing, so we’re not - my friend does it in an objectively fabulous fashion for her children, but it doesn’t make me feel I need to.

If something isn’t for you, fine, just move on. I’m not sure why people have gone to the trouble of opening, reading (or not, as is evident in lots of cases) the OP, then formulating a response that shits on other people’s choice - why?!? Would these same people be as caustic to others in real life??

I also don’t understand ‘Christmas begins on December 24th’ - for us, the Christmas period is the whole of advent, when we see friends and family, do Christmassy activities/events/crafts etc. - but that’s fine, people do what is right for them. 🤷🏻‍♀️

For a child a special meal is hardly likely to be a sensible one. On Christmas Day DT’s were on wall to wall sugar and junk. They were happy, I was happy. Once Christmas was over we were back to regular meals with loads of fruit and veggies. Christmas wasn’t the time to teach sensible eating habits.

Well if you read the thread you'd see that the reason the OP was doing something today is that she wanted to do something nice for some children she is looking after whilst they go through a particularly traumatic time.

lol what? @TheSnowiestQueen
"'Christmas' for most people starts on 24th Dec"

er... have you seen this thing called an advent calendar in the shops? they're really popular! it has all these numbers on it that start with 1 and go up to 25. these correspond with the period of 'Advent', the preparation time for Christmas. The idea comes from Christianity (and probably pre-christian religions/beliefs before then) but it is most definitely a part of mainstream British celebrations of Christmas, and by mainstream, I mean largely secular.

Charles Dickens (heard of him?) wrote a story called a Christmas Carol, it was about being kind and showing love to others, and using the Christmas season to remind ourselves to do so. OP's post epitomises the spirit of that book. I can only imagine your version of 'Christmas' is very far from the spirit of kindness and generosity OP has shown.

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse · 01/12/2025 15:00

Love reading and seeing the 1st December breakfasts. Unfortunately my Dc are older and one has ASD with ARFID so only eats certain foods. I wish I could join in. Thanks for sharing.

Quite. Advent Sunday was yesterday (in November, shock horror). Our Church is starting its Christmas prayer groups this week with the first charity carol concert next weekend along with the children's Christmas party (and Christingle). Looking at the newsletter in the service sheet four different organisations have a carol concert this week. Seems like quite a few people aren't waiting till the 24th!

Not morally superior, just superior to you in my ability to manage not to make irrelevant comments.

You sound like an unhinged, deeply aggressive bully.

Ooh bang to rights. Especially the unhinged bit

Ah that’s such a sweet thing to do for your friends children. I’m sure they’ll be delighted and it’ll help them feel at home in your home.

Must ask tho where do you all find the time to make eggs and pancakes your usual breakfast? Im impressed!

Pancakes can be on the table in 10 minutes or so... Quicker if you make them the day before and blast in microwave.

We have all sorts for breakfast, it doesn't have to take hours.

Fuck off back to Misery Town
