IF you do a special breakfast for today, what do you have? My kids are teens but we have our friends children staying with us at the moment who are younger, due to a family emergency, and they cheered up when we mentioned we could do this.

We are having,

🎄 Pancakes shaped like snowmen, Xmas trees and Rudolf with smarties, chocolate chips, strawberries and blueberries for decoration

🎄 Snowman crumpets

🎄 Grapes and blueberries made into a Christmas tree

🎄 Banana and strawberries made into candy canes

🎄 Milk in bottles decorated to look like snowmen

🎄 Hot chocolate and marshmallows

🎄 Chocolate coins

🎄 Advent calendars (chocolate and Lego)

I decorated the dining table late last night so it looks very festive for them and our friends children’s elves are with us!

Just wondering what you’re doing because I’m nosy and maybe I can steal some ideas.

I'm having Panetone

Do their parents know you’re giving them smarties, chocolates and marshmallows for breakfast?

That wouldn’t have bothered me in the slightest if my kids had been given that at a sleepover. I’d have said that sounds lovely, what a treat. No need for parents to be uptight 24/7.

Birchtree1 · 01/12/2025 07:42

I think this is lovely and my kids would probably want to move in with you!
....personally I kind of want to see a photo!
Mine are sadly having their same old stuff for weekday breakfasts!

NewAgeNewMe · 01/12/2025 07:43

You sound lovely op. Unlike some of the people on this thread.
You are A good friend.

LustigLustig · 01/12/2025 07:44

We have a “special” breakfast each Sunday in Advent.
Yesterday we had panettone.
Next Sunday will be pancakes or waffles with apple and cinnamon and toasted hazelnuts, or chocolate sauce, and cream. The following will be stollen, Swiss cheese, and citrus fruits. 4th Sunday will be eggs Benedict with smoked salmon.
And Christmas Day itself will be any and all of the above, and we’ll have a whole pineapple as well!
My children are late teens, but they would be deeply disappointed if we stopped the special breakfasts!

I have never heard of this, but will nick this ideal for a special day or two in December!
💡 ❤️ 👏
Thanks OP, these ideas are cracking! (See what I did there?) 😆 🤣 😂

AnxiousAnnieeeeeeeeee · 01/12/2025 07:52

No we don’t do it but I now wish we did!!

One of my DC are starting their prelims today and we got up and made tea and toast…will do something Christmassy at the weekend.

Thanks for these amazing ideas!!

Well done for making such an effort for the wee ones at a difficult time.

CautiousLurker2 · 01/12/2025 07:53

We don’t do a dec 1st breakfast, but we do do a special meal on the day the christmas decs go up - the weekend closest to the 1st December. This might be a smoked salmon/eggs breakfast but is usually a favourite evening meal (cooked by DH as I do the decs and it takes hours) followed by the first mince pies of the season. It’s a lovely thing you do OP, and marks the start of Christmas.

itsgettingweird · 01/12/2025 07:56

Never done it. It sounds utterly lovely and I’m sure under the circumstances that extra touch will be very well received. What a lovely thing to do for people going through a hard time as well as in general.

Was never gonna happen in my house as a LP working FT and a child to get to school first 🤣

So people who are mindful of kids' sugar intake aren't lovely?

The OP wasn’t asking anyone to join in, she was asking what other people do with their kids to mark dec 1st. There was no need to post or sneer.

Ceejadess · 01/12/2025 07:59

Rosie Henshaw on YouTube does it every year and usually uploads a video, she calls it the North Pole breakfast. I am sure she will give you some ideas for next year.

I think it is a lovely idea so well done OP on putting the effort in to cheer up the children.

Not in this context no. Anything but lovely.

TheToteBagLady · 01/12/2025 08:00

The only place I’ve seen or heard of this is family bloggers on social media. I assume they do it for content - likes and clicks.

That said, I think it’s a nice idea. We have advent calendars for this morning, but just a regular breakfast.

DestinyIsAll · 01/12/2025 08:04

@ChristmasHasCome You sound like a lovely, thoughtful, supportive friend. Sorry for what your friend and their family are going through. I’m sure your special breakfast will be a welcome treat and distraction. Small kindnesses.

BooksAndHooks · 01/12/2025 08:04

We always did a North Pole breakfast when mine were younger, this is the first year we haven’t now they are older. This is definitely not a new thing.

We always had similar to you and did it the nearest weekend to 1st. We added pop tarts as these would never be allowed usually so it was a one off treat. we would get a Christmas cereal, Sainsbury’s usually do one and this year B&M have an elf one. We used to buy the hovis bread with Christmas wrapper, press Christmas cutters into it so when it was toasted the picture showed.

Not in the situation the op is describing no. Some of the comments are completely unnecessary when the children are going through a difficult time and op is trying to do something nice.

LittleGreenDuck · 01/12/2025 08:09

My friend does this, I always look forward to seeing the yearly photos. She's very creative and goes all out. They do it in the first weekend of December so it's not a rush before school.

Couldn't be bothered with it myself, but I think it's lovely.

notacooldad · 01/12/2025 08:09

Op, just curious, I understand why you are doing a special breakfast for the children today, but is it something you would normally do on December 1st?

I know you put 'if ' in your title so I wondered if there was something significant about the 1st December and why people would do something extra, especially on a school morning.
No criticism from me, just curious.

I dud Google and all I really came up with was World Auds day.

Flpiiant · 01/12/2025 08:09

Stealing some of these ideas for special treats during the Christmas holidays!

There are better ways of showing care and love than through sugar.

NewAgeNewMe · 01/12/2025 08:11

🙄🙄🙄

MaplePumpkin · 01/12/2025 08:11

We’ve done pancakes with snowman shapes cut out of them, with a yummy gingerbread spread! We put our tree up last night, so we’ve just had them by the twinkly lights with the lamp on as it is still dark outside. Feels so cosy and lovely! I’m on mat leave and partner WFH and starts at 8.45, so we’ve loved doing this together this morning. No kids other than a four month old baby 🤣

Christmaslogistics · 01/12/2025 08:11

This sounds amazing ! Lucky children ! Ignore any miserable comments @ChristmasHasCome ❤️
