December 1st breakfast

IF you do a special breakfast for today, what do you have? My kids are teens but we have our friends children staying with us at the moment who are younger, due to a family emergency, and they cheered up when we mentioned we could do this.

We are having,

🎄 Pancakes shaped like snowmen, Xmas trees and Rudolf with smarties, chocolate chips, strawberries and blueberries for decoration

🎄 Snowman crumpets

🎄 Grapes and blueberries made into a Christmas tree

🎄 Banana and strawberries made into candy canes

🎄 Milk in bottles decorated to look like snowmen

🎄 Hot chocolate and marshmallows

🎄 Chocolate coins

🎄 Advent calendars (chocolate and Lego)

I decorated the dining table late last night so it looks very festive for them and our friends children’s elves are with us!

Just wondering what you’re doing because I’m nosy and maybe I can steal some ideas.

What a lovely thing to do for your friends children, it sounds like they're going through a very tough time and this will cheer them up.

Last year I got some nice cereal that the elves brought, this year I forgot so it's a normal breakfast here but yours sounds amazing!

Alltheunreadbooks · 01/12/2025 08:14

It's a nice idea in context; I wouldn't have gone to the lengths the OP has on a school day, but it's a nice way to officially start the festive period.

I can also see why some posters are viewing this as a complete humble brag about generosity of spirit and being an incredible friend.

God the replies on here!

We do a special breakfast on December the 1st. Usually pancakes, but we add things like marshmallows and squirty cream. DD6 loves it.

Its one day of sugary breakfast people. Drop the pearls you're clutching!

Exactly ONE day in which op is trying to put some cheer and distraction into lives of small children who are going through a horrible time and aren’t even with their parents at the moment.
some of the replies here are bloody testament to recent @MNHQ thread pulling posters up on being shitty for the sake of it!
@ChristmasHasCome lovely idea of yours and hope this current circumstance resolves soon for the dc.

Isadora2007 · 01/12/2025 08:15

@ChristmasHasCome I hope the kids had a lovely surprise this morning! And you all enjoyed the breakfast. We do what others call the North Pole breakfast- pancakes with toppings to choose from and squirty cream, fruit, melted snowmen made with Greek yogurt and berries and a cut up piece of carrot for a nose which they don’t eat lol, sometimes toast cut into shapes with cookie cutters and Nutella… but usually they’d opt for pancakes and fruit.
Other nice ideas for through your week would be to have hot chocolate with mini marshmallows and cream and let them make their own or help top it, salt dough shapes with cookie cutters and these could be decorated the next day or baked then decorated the same day, a walk to see Christmas lights nearer the end of the week around 4pm maybe, a garden centre visit to see their decorations, snuggly movie afternoons. Hopefully you can make something good for these kids at what sounds like a difficult time. 🌟

Probably too late but if I was a child, going through a tough time, staying away from home surely coming downstairs to a full circus will be quite overwhelming.
Sad events are tough to navigate, maybe don't associate the fun stuff with them else you risk triggering negative memories for ever.
Eg. Do you remember when x happened and we got a Lego advent calendar. That's our December 1st core memory unlocked.

You might not get the grateful reaction you hope for.

This is the Christmas section and I clearly said ‘IF’ you do a special breakfast for today. You don’t so…..erm……🤣

These children are my closest friends children and they’re going through a bad time at the moment, I’m willing to have a ‘big old faff’ to make them feel a little bit happier at the moment because I love them. It’s really not much effort anyway, we usually make porridge, eggs, pancakes for breakfast and have fruit etc.

Well done OP on making it a special experience for the children. I do a 1st December breakfast at weekend and elf dinner if its a school day.

My children love the elf's arrival even my 13 year old finds it a bit exciting as the elf arrives with advent calenders, Christmas jumpers, Christmas pjs and a couple of Christmas crafts. Normally breakfast is similar to what you describe and dinner is a nice Christmas fun table and prior to that doing Christmas crafts. These are a bit of extra "faff" for me but magic for my children so I am more than happy to do it.

SeaUrchinHat · 01/12/2025 08:20

I’ve never heard of this either (we just swap advent calendars over a normal breakfast) but it sounds absolutely lovely as it is OP, especially given the circumstances. I wish we all had friends like you.

I work with children many of whom have gone through horrible experiences. The fun moments made magic by an adult who cares make the difference. Yes it will be hard time for the children but op sounds like she loves them and is making things as special as she can for them. That will be special to them during a hard time.

I agree, OP I can see why you thought this might be a nice thought but this is actually too full on and not a great idea for kids in a crisis situation. You need to keep things low key and simple.

TwinklyNight · 01/12/2025 08:23

I've never heard of this but I like the idea. I'd add some bacon 🥓
Enjoy.

YouAreEntitledToMyOpinion · 01/12/2025 08:24

Breakfast sounds fabulous and you and your family sound lovely OP.

Sailininthechoppa · 01/12/2025 08:25

Definitely not.

Allmywishcometrue · 01/12/2025 08:25

What a bunch of miserable soulless people on here!

You know what OP? Even if it was for your kids on a school morning, who cares? What is wrong with waking up a bit early and FAFF for your kids?

It's a one off and what a lovely childhood memory to kick off Christmas countdown with a special breakfast, especially before school, it feels so special!

I am putting that on my list of Christmas traditions!

I think this is lovely, especially because the children are going through a hard time. Their faces are going to light up when they see the table and imagine how special it’s going to make them feel.

You’re a great friend and an even better aunty. These children are going to remember this difficult time when they’re older, but they’ll also remember your love and this absolute treat you put on for them.

I hope you all have a great December the 1st breakfast together. It sounds incredible x

this!! hope the kids all enjoy it and that whatever shit you're helping out with, gets sorted soon. what a lovely mate you are 👭

Mylittledrum · 01/12/2025 08:28

Aw wish I could filter out the absurdly negative posts on this thread to enjoy it better. I’m not sure about the sugar high commends—an advent calendar chocolate is tiny?

anyway, how sweet op! What a lovely way to start advent — most especially hosting a family in need. I love the sound of your breakfast, it’s always been my favourite meal of the day, even in my 20s I’d invite friends over for a party breakfast rather than dinner.

Cinai · 01/12/2025 08:29

There seem to be some Christmas grinches among us 🤣 OP, your breakfast sounds lovely! I’ve just dropped my little one to nursery and will treat myself to a nice cup of coffee and a croissant before I start work, nothing too spectacular but I do mark 1st December, it’s the start of a special time 🎄

Ghhhn · 01/12/2025 08:32

This is lovely and really kind.

PistachioTiramisu · 01/12/2025 08:33

Why don't people just whip up some double cream and serve that instead of the stuff which comes in tins and has additives? Don't understand that one at all!

Silvercoconut · 01/12/2025 08:35

Are you American? What is the importance of today?
I'm astonished that anyone would make such a big thing of it.

TwooooDoooozenRoses · 01/12/2025 08:36

Imagine being so fucking miserable and joyless you have to come onto a thread which literally leads with IF YOU DO THIS… and try and suck the fun and happiness out of everyone else’s lives too 🤢 how hard can it be to simply scroll on if it’s not for you?

Good for you op, do what makes you happy and what you think is best for those kids. A little special treat is never a bad thing, particularly when it’s one as completely harmless as a special breakfast!

To be fair, I’m a bit of a hypocrite commenting as it isn’t actually something I do 😂 but it’s a lovely idea.

Because we can’t be arssd.

Exasperateddonut · 01/12/2025 08:36

That sounds really magic! I hope it makes them
really cheerful. You’re a good friend.

Now I feel like I should mark it so will throw some sprinkles on the porridge 🤣

RudolphTheReindeer · 01/12/2025 08:37

Wow, the scrooges are out in force today! What a lovely thing to do for some children who are clearly having a hard time right now.

elliejjtiny · 01/12/2025 08:37

We don't do this but i wanted to say this is so lovely of you and make a massive difference to these children. When my dc have gone through hard times it's always the nice kind things that people have done to cheer them up that they remember the most.

SanctusInDistress · 01/12/2025 08:39

It’s a lovely gesture, but however much tjey enjoy it now when they are teenagers you’ll still be in their eyes a missive nuisance and they’ll hate you for suggesting they should wear a coat when it is minus sbd raining outside.
