In need of Christmas Day dessert inspo... what are you having?

Just that really.. I haven't been in the headspace for Christmas yet this year and need to get my arse together!

What is everyone else making? (Or buying, no judgement here and may still be good inspo for something to make!)

The only restrictions for us are that I detest anything lemon and most of the others aren't big on the traditional classics like Christmas cake/pudding or mince pies.

Contenders so far include pistachio tiramisu, some kind of sticky toffee Christmas pudding hybrid (reviews say non Christmas pud fans love it, or tiramisù trifle.

I'll probably make two options anyway so keen to see what others are having!

I’m doing Italian style apple cake with a few pine nuts & a chocolate tiramisu for Christmas meal with in-laws and Eve’s pudding or a mincemeat traybake for Christmas Day.
I love the look of some of the alternative trifles posted so am tempted to do one of those too. The others would both freeze if we have leftovers

Fink · 20/12/2024 10:44

I decided to make the Nigella trifle, following your recommendations. Any idea where I can get cherry brandy & bottled cherries? They're not available in my big Sainsbury's.

Madcats · 20/12/2024 11:10

@Fink You might have been looking in the wrong bit of the store?

Waitrose had theirs along with the ready made/tinned custard, meringues and jelly etc (and not where it would normally be).

M&S might be a good option too

Ocado had run out of quite a few brands in my neck of the woods.

Fink · 20/12/2024 11:41

@Madcats thanks. I asked the store staff and the cherries were nowhere to be seen. I got desperate and ordered some at an extortionate price on Amazon. The Christmas panic is setting in!

Normallynumb · 20/12/2024 12:51

It's only myself and DS1 this year so I've ordered an amaretto Tiramisu, prepared by Mr/s Tesco
Tiramisu is a family tradition here

mumbruh · 20/12/2024 12:58

We have mince pies and a choc log. Going to have a black Forrest gateaux too alongside a big cookie ice cream sandwich which I picked up in Sainsbury's! Looks good for the kids anyway
Dp is also banging on about making a fruity trifle

Madcats · 21/12/2024 16:31

Rice pudding was a big hit at lunch.

It took ages to cool, so probably best tackled the day before you plan to eat it.

HansHolbein · 21/12/2024 16:32

I’m going to make a chocolate trifle 😋

Vetoncall · 21/12/2024 17:04

I hit M&S today and bought the Collection chilled yule log, churros stars and chocolate pine cones. I got a Christmas pudding and some brandy butter for the 2 people in our family who like it. I also bought ice cream (Kelly's of Cornwall honeycomb, vanilla and raspberry ripple), meringue nests, raspberry coulis, a jar of chocolate and hazelnut spread which can be melted, and will get cream and fresh fruit nearer the time so people can make their own meringues/Eton mess.

The only dessert I'm going to make this year is a no-bake Toblerone cheesecake because it's always requested and it's really quick and easy. Will do it on Christmas Eve.

Fink · 21/12/2024 17:57

After buying the ingredients, I'm slightly rethinking my choices because there's a lot of dairy-heavy dishes and possibly people would like some other option. I'm going to do Baked Alaska and profiteroles on another day because I don't have time to make them for Christmas Day. So that's left me with cheesecake, trifle, yule log (cream filling), and a token Christmas pudding which not many people will eat. I don't know, maybe I need to find something less dairy-based. But I need to be able to prepare it in advance so that rules out a few things.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 21/12/2024 18:43

I don't eat a load of dairy @Fink and certainly no cheese boards (even though I have no gall bladder , I get a lot of pain if I eat too much fat especially at night )

I might buy some fruit for a salad , I know my DD would happily devour it .

If you wanted to make it a proper dessert maybe a spiced fruit syrup to soak it ( add rum or something ? )

I will have cherry brandy left over from the trifle, and few little use for cherry brandy, so I might try to use that in some fruit-based thing. We have the Christmas pudding but I'm slightly worried it won't turn out well. It got wet while being steamed. and I haven't fed it all year.

Trifle for desert on Christmas Day
Christmas Pud on Boxing Day

Not huge desert fans, so we have a considerable amount of cheese!

MadameBethune · 21/12/2024 19:14

Christmas pud, vanilla custard
and/or
Christmas pud-flavour ice cream/ vanilla ice cream with cherries in kirsch
and/or
baked Basque cheesecake (Waitrose)

and we have yule log, mince pies, fruit, cheese, chocolates.

For 9 people aged 20-90, several of whom claim they have tiny appetites and don't have a sweet tooth, but are then seen scarfing down bowls full of sweet treats and munching away on chocolates.

Crikeyalmighty · 21/12/2024 20:16

@Madcats - so none left for me to pop round and finish up I guess!!!

Howyoualldoworkme · 21/12/2024 20:21

Viannetta.
It started as a joke when my youngest son was a teenager and now it's tradition 😁

You'll have to fight DD for it!

I am trying to remember whether you are up in the heady heights of Combe Down? So many Bathonians on here.

Sherry trifle

Raspberry Roulade

Chocolate Profiteroles

ribiera · 21/12/2024 23:27

We're always too full for a real pudding showstopper type thing and lots of people want different things, so I made a couple of different batches of cookies and freeze them. People then can choose what they want and I pop them in the already warm oven to bake when we sit down to lunch. We eat warm with ice cream.

Sgtmajormummy · 21/12/2024 23:59

I still have to decide but I’ve bought in the ingredients for:

shortbread and/or millionaire’s
pineapple upside down
Nigella’s mushed mandarin and almond flour cake
chocolate salami (with or without rum)
tiramisù
rum and raisin ice cream to serve with cantuccini and vin santo
vanilla ice cream to serve with apple strudel
a frozen chocolate torte.

I always have a pre-baked pastry case in the pantry because its SO easy to whip up a dessert in one. This left me speechless so it's taken me a couple of pages ro recover.

I've ordered M&S Popping down the Christmas Tree, 6 chocolate fir cones and their special Yule log. To add to these, I'm making cheat's Platinum Jubilee trifle and a two-tier cheesecake (upright flakes round edge of biscuit base, bottom layer white choc cheesecake with crumbled flakes, top layer caramel cheesecake then topped with choc ganache, crushed flake and cream swirls). I haven't made a fancy one before so if it flops it'll be a Cheesecake Mess and hopefully taste delicious. The above are to carry us all over 3 days by the way. Nobody likes dried fruit any more but I used to make - flan tin, biscuit base, stewed apple/mincemeat mix then topped by meringue (crisp up in oven just before serving) - used to be gobbled up with thick double cream.

That cheesecake sounds INCREDIBLE, can I come to you rather than have to do the in laws 😂😂 i love caramel and white chocolate so that combination sounds 😋😋😋😋

I’m doing a white chocolate and ginger cheesecake as a gluten and alcohol free alternative to Christmas pudding. It’s a no bake recipe that I can make ahead

@Chocdown could you share your recipe please, it sounds delicious

Chocdown · 22/12/2024 12:32

@MrsPositivity1 sure, I use this one https://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/whitechocolate22234

ETA: I use gluten free ginger nuts so as not to poison my coeliac guests 😂
