In need of Christmas Day dessert inspo... what are you having?

Just that really.. I haven't been in the headspace for Christmas yet this year and need to get my arse together!

What is everyone else making? (Or buying, no judgement here and may still be good inspo for something to make!)

The only restrictions for us are that I detest anything lemon and most of the others aren't big on the traditional classics like Christmas cake/pudding or mince pies.

Contenders so far include pistachio tiramisu, some kind of sticky toffee Christmas pudding hybrid (reviews say non Christmas pud fans love it, or tiramisù trifle.

I'll probably make two options anyway so keen to see what others are having!

Won't be making it though!

louderthan · 17/12/2024 17:25

Or possibly a proper 80s style plastic trifle

It looks great! I'm not sure if it's maybe a little too sweet for us. I will ask the family.

Just a warning that it shows your real name (or at least your name on tiktok) when you share it.

I'm in Australia, so not sure if these biscuits are available in the UK but anything that will soak up the cream will work. The link is for a log version, and is plain chocolate, for the wreath obviously just shape it into a circle, to add the mint, crush an aero and add some to each layer between the biscuits as you add the cream. Then decorate with more on top and I usually add some mint chocolate balls. Have added a photo of a previous one the kids made!

Another really nice version is use gingernut biscuits and add crushed pineapple between the layers/to decorate - it's really refreshing and quite light after a big meal.

Amazing thanks so much. I'm sure I can find something similar thank you ☺️

My Christmas crumble is made with apples dates cloves and cinnamon so has quite a Christmassy feel to it even though it isnt a traditional Xmas pudding.

Sounds amazing! I came here to say a profiterole pyramid but your crumble nails it.

maddiemookins16mum · 18/12/2024 10:13

We're having mincemeat and apple crumble with custard or thick cream (during Call The Midwife). I'll also have a trifle.

blobby10 · 18/12/2024 10:14

Steamed treacle sponge and custard after the Christmas meal. Yule log/trifle/ cheesecake is for tea or even Boxing Day in our house!

Ariela · 18/12/2024 10:55

We are having this, it's already sitting in the freezer, easy peasy on the day!

Nigella’s chocolate salami is always a crowd pleaser here! I don’t tend to faff with the string to decorate, and sometimes will shape into lots of small balls rather than a log shape. It’s quite boozy so I also make a blueberry tart for those who avoid alcohol.

keeping an eye on the thread for alternative suggestions!

Do you put the mincemeat in the Apple pie or serve it on the side? If inside the Apple pie do you mix it in with the apples or layer it?

I always have a pre-baked pastry case in the pantry because its SO easy to whip up a dessert in one. This left me speechless so it's taken me a couple of pages ro recover.

I've ordered M&S Popping down the Christmas Tree, 6 chocolate fir cones and their special Yule log. To add to these, I'm making cheat's Platinum Jubilee trifle and a two-tier cheesecake (upright flakes round edge of biscuit base, bottom layer white choc cheesecake with crumbled flakes, top layer caramel cheesecake then topped with choc ganache, crushed flake and cream swirls). I haven't made a fancy one before so if it flops it'll be a Cheesecake Mess and hopefully taste delicious. The above are to carry us all over 3 days by the way. Nobody likes dried fruit any more but I used to make - flan tin, biscuit base, stewed apple/mincemeat mix then topped by meringue (crisp up in oven just before serving) - used to be gobbled up with thick double cream.

Am making a gingerbread Buche de Noel on Boxing Day but that would also be a good CD dessert.

Have also made James Martin Black Forest Trifle before.

www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/black-forest-trifle

And this is also amazing and so easy.

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/squidgy-chocolate-pear-pudding

Could I prepare the squidgy chocolate pear pudding, put in fridge and cook it the following day? The recipe says that you can freeze it uncooked but don't think I'll have room in my freezer and won't have time to do the prep on the day.

Madcats · 18/12/2024 15:31

I think I've landed on
: Danish rice pudding when DD gets home on Friday night (just need to buy some almond essence) have plenty of cherries now (but I notice there has been a bit of a run on them in Ocado)
: (Assuming I can find the fruit) deconstructed white chocolate cheesecake with a gooseberry sauce (or raspberries if no joy finding any gooseberries) for Xmas Day
: chocolate and cherry trifle for Boxing Day

Note the presence of healthy fruit!!!

Crikeyalmighty · 18/12/2024 16:14

@Madcats ooh if she doesn't like the rice pudding - I know you are in Bath - and will pop round for any leftovers!!! Honestly it's one of the things i miss most about Copenhagen Xmas!!

ProvincialLady24 · 18/12/2024 16:20

Sherry Trifle.

I'm sure that would be fine. I think that's what I did the first time I made it.

merryhouse · 18/12/2024 23:06

spiced ice cream with lime sauce

TeaMistress · 19/12/2024 11:18

I found a lovely berry pavlova / meringue dessert in marks and spencer. Shockingly priced at £13 though. They also had a spiced speculoos cottage cake but I baulked at paying £25 for it.

thisoldcity · 16/12/2024 17:36

I'm assuming that would be a bit syrupy and sweet? Maybe not though. I'll take a look at what the tins say. That would certainly make it easier. Thanks!

You could always thin it down with some water

I'm thinking of making this too. I think I will just boil the alcohol off then allow it to cool before using.

TheMousePipes · 19/12/2024 12:38

We’re having the Danish rice pudding on the 23rd (and leftovers for Christmas Eve breakfast!), champagne jelly on Christmas Eve, Home made Christmas pudding on 25th (but it only has fruits I like in it, so mainly cherries and apricots!) and affogato on Boxing Day which I am just making the ice cream for now.

housethatbuiltme · 19/12/2024 13:07

Cheap and classic but we just have Vianetta.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 19/12/2024 23:26

I'm going to make some mini Banoffi Pies ( DD is all in favour , DH doesn;t eat chocolate , DS won;t entertain them )

The trifle can wait till New Year
