What wrapping paper have you gone for?

I am very fussy about wrapping paper and the only one I found I liked this year is out of stock, it was a double sided Dunelm one

I haven't found another I even remotely like. I love wrapping and using ribbon to make it all look amazing.

@Binfire “will probably wrap the children’s gifts in something cheaper and save the nicer stuff for friends and family”.

Aren’t your children family? 😓

Isn't it a question of what they appreciate though? Adults will often take the time to appreciate the aesthetics of a nicely-wrapped gift, children... less so, they just want what's inside 😂.

Besides, adult gifts go under the tree in our house and so we can enjoy seeing them sit there for a large chunk of December. I don't tend to put the kids' gifts under the tree until Christmas Eve because otherwise temptation proves too much for them and they're shaking them and tweaking corners to have a little peek.

fatimashortbread · 03/12/2024 22:18

I use Furoshiki cloth wrappings which are reusable year after year or part of the present e.g. a scarf

Mamabearsmile · 03/12/2024 22:19

I'm using selection of newspaper and brown paper and lining paper. Spraying a lace star and a white star which I'll use instead of a gift tag. Calligraphy pen to write on them. Yes loads of ribbon.

Kentishbirdlife · 03/12/2024 22:51

I use newspaper.

A colleague buys fabric from charity shops and make’s reusable wrapping, it looks so incredible and is sustainable and affordable! I love it

Growing up, Dad was always last to.wrap his presents to Mum by which time there was very little, if any, giftwrap left so wrapping in newspaper became a family tradition!

My brother used to use tin foil! Apparently it was "just like" the expensive metallic wrapping paper, but easier to wrap with. Annoyingly, I can't fault his logic...

IME children actually prefer less effort with wrapping, in terms of bows and stuff - they just get frustrated as it's a few more precious seconds until the paper is off!

We do get "children's" themed paper with cartoon reindeer or toys on. Santa always opts for wrapping paper patterned with his own face - and who can blame him?

I like printed brown/kraft paper and there seems to be more of it about these days as it’s recyclable. However, I’ll be using whatever is left over from previous years! My Mum recycles all of hers, so I’ll probably get back whatever I wrapped hers in last year. There is one particularly nice gift bag we both like, that my sister gave me a present in about 10 years ago, and I think it’s gone back and forth between me and my mum at least once a year since - but then again we’re all neurodivergent in my family so we are very much creatures of habit! I do like presents to look nicely wrapped but don’t see the point in buying new stuff every year. By the way, when I clicked on that link it looked like it was in stock. Nice paper too.

Mamabearsmile · 04/12/2024 00:53

When I was younger I was obsessed by the papery elegant sheets sold by boots in the seventies. All the right people got something wrapped in it. Boy friend, parents, best friend. It was really classy and I was obsessed by wrapping exquisitely. Now, poorer and arty I go for that. ARTY WITH A CAPITAL A! This year as I've said somewhere else on here the base paper is newspaper, lining paper and brown paper, with stencilled lace stars and labels. Free. Love it.

SpiritOfEcstasy · 04/12/2024 01:17

I miss my Costco membership for this alone! That and the peanut butter pretzels 😂 Back to the wrapping paper though … it was just really good quality with a printed grid on the back so it didn’t get cut wonky. Was fab!

Worrywort23 · 04/12/2024 02:01

I wanted some dark wrapping paper this year and found these ones in WH Smith, plus the Kraft one with mice for the children's presents. All recyclable. I have some lovely grosgrain ribbon from Solstrene Green. I make my own tags and cards

I found some lovely wrapping paper by Cambridge Imprints at the local garden centre which is gorgeous but bloody expensive!

I haven’t looked elsewhere but will probably wrap the children’s gifts in something cheaper and save the nicer stuff for friends and family.

Oh my goodness, @binfire, that paper is wonderful. I have bought some Sophie Allport in a pre Christmas sale. When using large rolls, I like having gridlines. Overall, I've got a bit lazy and have decided that a major advantage of buying presents online is that you can just order them to be sent to the person without worrying about wrapping!

I love being given presents in hand decorated brown paper.

Namechangefordaughterevasion · 04/12/2024 04:30

I've bought a case of white paper bags as used in takeaway shops. I decorate them with rubber stamps and stencils and/or personalise with messages in brush calligraphy. The present goes inside wrapped in tissue paper. All recyclable and gives me an outlet for creativity.

Copperoliverbear · 04/12/2024 05:09

Costco lovely and thick and double sided.

CrispieCake · 04/12/2024 06:39

@Worrywort23 . Love the mice one!

Behindthethymes · 04/12/2024 06:58

I’ve always bought mine in January, then felt disappointed with it in November when looking in the shops so this year I deliberately avoided buying any in January and this years offerings are just bland and disappointing.

TheMauveBeaker · 04/12/2024 07:12

Plain brown paper. I’ve used it for years as the Christmas paper didn’t used to be recyclable. But honestly? Life’s too short to stress about wrapping paper!

teaandtoastwithmarmite · 02/12/2024 13:25

I just bought some I picked up in card factory. Didn’t know there was a decision over it 🥴

I put a lot of thought into it . As a child , one of my favourite moments was was waking up on Christmas morning to see all the presents under the tree . We weren’t allowed to opened presents until my grandma came over and I would spend that time looking at the different papers in detail. Now I love to pick out wrapping papers that go with each other and a balance of traditional, over the top cringe and neutrals. I have a lot of fun with and brings me a lot of joy .

MillieMinx · 04/12/2024 08:54

I’ve gradually stopped using wrapping paper. Over the years I’ve been buying fabric and making gift bags and wraps. Wrapping paper here in NZ is generally not as nice or the quality is bad meaning you have to double wrap. I used to love the sheets we used to get from the market or Woolies

Don't think anyone is stressing. It is one of my favourite parts of Chirstmas doing the wrapping and making the presents look beautiful.

I like wrapping gifts with plain brown paper, but tying beautiful coloured ribbons around them. It's really effective! For any gifts given at home, I'll gather up the ribbon afterwards and put it back in the big Christmassy biscuit tin of stuff 🙂Sometimes I manage to do it without any sellotape either, its all just held together with a ribbon. It's the little things in life!

Yes to this! It's one of my favourite Christmas jobs. Cup of tea & a mince pie, some lovely festive music, cosy lighting... and get creative!
