80s Xmas tree

I have bought some colourful Xmas tree lights that remind me of my 80's childhood and it's inspired me to go all multicoloured and retro this year!

If anyone sees any other decorations anywhere please can you post them here.

Also if anyone has a time machine I'd a like a big metal tin full of the old recipe Quality Streets in the old colourful wrappers.

OP, this has just cheered me up. I was born in 1971 and Christmas was all coloured fairy lights, tinsel, paper chains and a bit later those foil lantern things that you hung from the ceiling. I lost both my parents over the last 2 years and this has just reminded me of a truly wonderful childhood. I hope you find your retro decorations x

I have also wanted to do an 80s/90s Christmas like my childhood.
I’ve bought colourful tinsel and foil hanging decorations (from Temu was the only place I could find foil hangers annd streamers) and colourful lights.
Asda had lots of colourful baubles.

OP have a look on M&S. I bought some lovely tree decorations that remind me of my grandma. These were some I bought

I’ve been doing an 80s Christmas tree for years - inherited all the family baubles etc. it’s a thing of joy.

Oh this has just brought back a memory from when my brother and I were kids at Christmas. The foil lanterns!! I remember we had one hanging from the ceiling and it was above my Dad's chair where he would sit to watch TV. One evening it came unstuck and floated down and landed square on my Dad's head, folding itself back up on the top of his head. My Dad had a good sense of humour and just sat there with it on his head while my brother and I were just killing ourselves laughing. My mum came in from the kitchen to see what the noise was all about and started to laugh too. What a brilliant memory that I had completely forgotten until you mentioned the words 'foil lanterns'.

Thanks for that. 😂

Charity shops are good for old baubles. And I also got some 70/80s wrapping paper which was identical to stuff we’d actually used… I wrapped empty boxes and put these out at the fireplace!

which lights did you get? @CaptainBenson

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 07/10/2024 08:23

Where did you get the lights, OP? I really love the old fashioned coloured ones - soft and twinkly, nothing like the harsh LED coloured jobs.

BoobyDazzler · 07/10/2024 12:17

The new multicoloured lights are no-where near as lovely as the old ones :( I want some with pink in, and that lovely soft orange.

soupfiend · 07/10/2024 12:19

70s and 80s lights were fantastic, current modern ones are just no good, dont give that lovely relaxaed feeling of warmth at all

ToriMJ · 07/10/2024 12:20

We also have an 80s tree in addition to a tasteful one.
I bloody love the 80s one.

StMarieforme · 07/10/2024 12:58

I started mine in the 80s and still use some of the decs... does that count?!

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 07/10/2024 13:04

Oh my tree is a vomit of colour, I love it. We have the 80s lantern lights for outside too. We buy decorations wherever we go on holiday and have years old tinsel.

troppibambini6 · 07/10/2024 13:08

Love an 80s tree. Did anyone else used to have like a gauzey kind of floss on their tree. It's hard to explain it was like a fine sheet of floss my mum used to drape it over the tree when decorated made the lights look more twinkley.

soupfiend · 07/10/2024 13:53

We used to have lights in the 70s which were like dickensian lanterns

StrawberryWater · 07/10/2024 14:16

We have an 80s tree! I love it so much more than the more tasteful one in the front room as it's so bright and colourful.

Probably a massive fire hazard but eh it looks fab.

I got all my bits from my parents but I just go to second-hand shops and browse ebay if I need to add more to it.

ABirdsEyeView · 07/10/2024 14:47

Just bought these @BoobyDazzler - they have a nice pink and no emergency services blue.

OP - John Lewis have quality street baubles for the tree. Not quite the same as a big tin of the original chocs, but still a nice retro feel.

Oh thank you ❤️

DappledThings · 07/10/2024 15:05

I've always used coloured lights and plenty of mismatched baubles and tinsel. Never considered it to be particularly 80s, just a Christmas tree. Can't stand curated matchy matchy ones, they looks corporate and sad in a home.

quantumbutterfly · 07/10/2024 15:22

satin baubles from amazon - because we have cats so they need to be shatterproof.😁

I love that!

ginasevern · 07/10/2024 16:36

Blimey, this sounds just like my Christmas decs every year - except I didn't know I was being retro.

Strokethefurrywall · 07/10/2024 16:50

This is my 80s tree. Well less 80s and more "extra". We just add more tinsel and ornaments every year.

Same! I put so much tinsel on my tree you can barely see green! Xmas Grin
