Thread 4 - the one with our Guylian best before fate

Reastie · 05/10/2024 19:23

It was a toughie to pick the thread title this time!
Thanks to @RainbowZebraWarrior for the title Xmas Grin For those interested, our fate is best before June of next year and the offer was regarding Guylian choices at B&M.

Greetings and welcome one and all to a friendly and joyful corner of mn - the Christmas bargain thread. Here, we share Christmas present purchases, ideas, links and discount codes, with the aim to spread the Christmas magic and joy and reduce the financial stress.

It's a very busy thread, so see the tips below for helping everything run smoothly and avoiding repetitions of Cookiegate etc al. It's a lovely, friendly bunch and I'm so grateful to each and every one of you for building such a warm, fuzzy and generous spot on mn. I know I've save so much over the years and am so grateful to all of you for sharing.

Pull up a sleigh and relax with a mulled wine and mince pie, for Christmas has nearly arrived!

@ me if you need anything or you want to let me know anything - the thread moves so fast I can't always keep up so this really helps

A few pointers to make everyone’s life easier and the thread be as useful as possible:

  • It’s handy to put in bold the bargains so they’re easy to spot
  • No affiliate links
  • No need to place mark or post messages of hello or thanks at the start of a new thread - use the ‘watch thread’ button
  • Be nice or leave

The current referral thread for sharing referral codes https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/christmas/4940918-4940918-bargain-referrals-thread-6 . Please use this rather than this page to share referral links to make the sharing fair.

To make clicks links, you set it up like this only without any spaces apart from between the website and the word(s) you’re writing: www.bargainsahoyeveryonecomehere.co.uk

Thanks @RainbowZebraWarrior for the instructions below.
To make something bold, put this star * either side of the word you want to bold (with no spaces in between)

So starhellostar would look like this.

hello

Obviously use the * not the word star

Some of the below is copied and pasted from previous years, so do @ me if the links don't work

I was only thinking about the owl pellets the other week! I missed out on them, but will order some for this Xmas. Thank you @friskybivalves for the link!

Edited to say sadly it doesn't look like you can buy them from this site anymore as when I clicked on the owl pellet bit, page no longer available.

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 07/10/2024 20:31

The rules for providing owl pellets changed. A lot of places won't offer them now as they require high temperature double sterilisation (and more regs I can't remember but I know the centre I volunteer at no longer provide to schools etc because of the rules) and many small rescues just don't have the facilites/money to do this

Just seen that some of the Aldi special buys are delayed. I really wanted the railway - does anyone know when it might be in?

As It’s nearly Amazon Prime day, I will share my little tip for making sure I don’t miss out on a bargain when I’m not 100% sure about it. I will order it, but set my Prime delivery day for a week ahead, it means I have time to really think about it without risking it going out of stock. Just in case it helps anyone

In Ireland we can't choose the delivery day, but I order things with a card that doesn't have any money on it, so I get the message that my order is on hold until I update the payment method..I think it gives about a week before it gets cancelled.

ImTheMidsomerMurderer · 07/10/2024 21:15

Well @PurpleSkittle I tried 🤣🤣 I really appreciate your instructions but as you can see, I have absolutely no clue how to do it 🤦🏻‍♀️

sorryiasked · 07/10/2024 21:15

I know nothing about them and haven't compared the price but amazon have instax SHARE SP3 SQUARE film format portable smartphone instant photo printer, Black [[ supposedly for £75.99 instead of £179.99

Oh no!

I also got some from this place

www.bowc.co.uk/shop?page=2

But they too are saying OOS. Might be worth getting in touch to see if they have also been prevented from selling them by the hygiene rules (bah humbug!)?

I hope this request doesn't upset anyone,
My soon to be teen grandson has a keen interest in zoology and last year requested a crocodile skull , which he was lucky enough to get in a glass case.
He has asked for similar again this year, as in some more animal bones (skull , skeleton)
He wants study and draw them.
If any of you amazing mumsnet people have any light bulb moments, please share. 🙏

I got DS a selection of eggs at this stage of life, he is an adult now and still has them 😂Emu, Rhea and Ostrich! Amazing and beautiful

MissMaryBennet · 07/10/2024 21:38

If you type 'fossil mould' into Amazon there are a number of shell/ammonite etc moulds that you could use to make (in my case slightly less beautiful) versions of the ones in the edible shop.

Had an email from Playmobil that they are doing buy one get one half price on their website.

Contemplatinglife · 07/10/2024 21:45

My son has requested new airpods for his Christmas. Bit confused as to which are better the 4th edition or the pro 2?

TylerEndicott · 07/10/2024 22:04

Another way to do the short links:

Two square brackets like this [[
Copy and paste the web address you're linking to
Then space bar
Then whatever you want to name the link eg Amazon deal
Add another two square brackets but the ones facing the opposite way so two of these ]

MustWeDoThis · 07/10/2024 18:00

Thank you!

I don't know if I'm doing this right (Also, Guylian are my fav chocolates and I was unaware you could get them at bargain prices in B&M.)

I also buy a knock-off Guylian from Lidl/Aldi - They are 2.99 a box, look just like them, there's around 30 chocolates in the box (maybe less!) And sometimes taste even nicer...they are in a white box, cannot remember the name, clear plastic on top showing seashell and seahorse shaped, marbled chocolate inside.

Also, I have this link for a Salter hot chocolate maker down from £70 to £34:

www.robertdyas.co.uk/salter-the-chocolatier-ek5134-electric-milk-frother-hot-chocolate-maker-black

Check out their duvet covers and bed spreads down to £20! Love Robert Dyas.

I remember people were talking about the 4 pack of Guylian for £1 from B&M last year. If it helps, spotted a 3 pack in Co-op today, 2 for £1.30

@Timelass Facebook groups! Way less likely to overpay for such things in there than eBay I’ve found - I get bits from the groups UK Taxidermy, Vulture Culture UK, Dead Bits For Brits and I’m sure there are more. Found some lovely dealers local to me and have some interesting things in my collection ☺️
If you’re not keen on buying from other collectors/dealers on FB then antique shops tend to get skulls & taxidermy in, one local to me had an excellent baboon skull in recently and I’d have bought it if I had the spare cash and didn’t already have a baboon 😅

Londonmummy66 · 07/10/2024 23:10

@Timelass try ebay other taxidermy category they have a range of skulls and skeletons eg a whole fox for about £30.

Not offending me as DD2 is studying archaeology.
