That is one lucky child.

LostittoBostik · 05/10/2024 18:13

£400 on one child?

Fair enough if you can afford it, but you could spend a quarter of that and they'd have just as special a day.

NewUser1111 · 05/10/2024 18:14

Blimey

StressedQueen · 05/10/2024 18:14

Giving me good ideas for my 6 year old 😁My 9 year old is closer in age but she is getting too grown up for my liking!

Mamabobogo · 05/10/2024 18:16

Far far too much!

quite obscene IMO!!

Barryplopper · 05/10/2024 18:18

We also go big for Christmas, op. We don't go crazy for birthdays and they don't have much over the year so Christmas we do save up for and spoil them.
My dd is having a camera, Slime, trainers, a care basket, pjs, Slippers, bath bombs, five nights at freddies books, v bucks, converse and some clothes x

Laureli · 05/10/2024 18:19

This is from me and her dad, x2 grandparents, x2 aunties and uncles - thank you for your opinion:)

This is from me and her dad, x2 grandparents, x2 aunties and uncles - we do much less on birthdays and don't get random presents throughout the year. And we go on several day out throughout the year

Bloody hell. That's about 4 times as much as either of mine will be getting even you add up presents from 2 sets of grandparents, 2 sets of aunts/uncles and us. Madness.

Still far too much and totally overwhelming for a child …..

and is 5th October FFS!!

So if in the next 11 and a half weeks an 8 year old wants something particular for Christmas, it’s a no!

Because crazy parent has decided on presents at the beginning of October?

Get a bloody grip of yourself!

StarShapedWindow · 05/10/2024 19:08

That’s a great list - I’m guessing some presents will be stocking fillers too like the lush stuff etc.

My kids are older now (16 & 12) so they’ll get new IPhones, 12 year old DD loves Jelly Cats so I’ll buy a few of those, DS would like some driving lessons at a place near us that does young persons lessons and we’re going to see the Cinderella ballet plus Panto for New Year. I expect they’ll give me a few requests in the run up to Christmas that’ll end up under the tree!

I think your DD will have a wonderful day!

Serene135 · 05/10/2024 19:38

I’m sure she will love those presents, OP! I loved sylvanian families as a child. Used to have the cute hedgehog family 🥰

HiStevenItsClemFandango · 05/10/2024 19:39

Good haul, OP! I'm trying to gather ideas for my (will be) 8yo.

I'm planning on getting a go-kart, mini fridge, switch game (Zelda, detective Pikachu), a few books for a series he likes (beast quest) tie-dye kit, some HP lego.

He likes making films so I'm wondering about getting him his own laptop and some bits to do with that hobby.

Yeah, they're fine thanks.

MemphisBluesAgain · 05/10/2024 19:46

I actually like these threads and find them useful. I'm getting DD:

• a sew your own teddy bear kit (her request)

  • a really lovely book about dragons
  • a science kit I saw on a MN "best toys" list
  • a board game (tbc)
  • a jellyfish light for her room

Plus some stocking fillers e.g. top trumps, a small Gravitrax add-on. A lush bath bomb is a good shout. Relatives will probably get her books or Lego. Plus we are going to the theatre and ice-skating at Somerset House (but we do those every year).

OddityOddityOdd · 05/10/2024 19:47

You are bonkers. When your child grows into a demanding, entitled teen and adult, do t be surprised and ask what you did wrong.

FountainofTruth · 05/10/2024 19:55

We've bought dgd (also 8) a mathmos neo lava lamp and theatre tickets. Also do a stocking which we gift at the dinner table. It includes sylvanian families blind bag (the works), nina peanut latest book, donut cosy socks, and a shiny red apple (obvs haven't bought that). I like the idea of putting a lush bath product in thanks, I'm going to do that next year!

Scout2016 · 05/10/2024 20:40

@MemphisBluesAgain what's the dragons book please?

So far the only consistent thing my DD same age has asked for is lego creator 3 in 1 kit.
I've got some stocking fillers - washi tape and decorative split pins, a wire fidget thing from a hippy shop, wonka chocolate toothpaste, and a gemstone turtle.
Also
Posca pens and pebbles in the hobbycraft offer.
Books, a snoopy ooodie and some cool tshirts off vinted. Well, I hope she thinks they are cool... the whole "you're being embarrassing" thing has started recently.

I buy things for older relatives who can't/ don't get out or shop online to give her too and coming up with enough ideas can get tricky. I really appreciate the bargains threads on here to help keep cost down and ideas coming.

DaysLongYearsShort · 05/10/2024 20:54

But what if her list looks completely different to that? Are you going to buy the stuff on her list too or just ignore it?

I don't have an issue with how much you've spent actually but that's a lot of plastic tat that with an 8 year old will be in the bin in a couple of years max. It's a lot of money on not particularly great toys. Does she have any hobbies or interests?
