My 8 year old would find your list far too babyish. She used to love sylvanian families but gave them all to her little sister over a year ago. The Barbie styling head I’m getting for my 4 year old

She's asked for most items on this lost including the styling head and sylvanian families ! She's still very much into playing with toys x

If you add up up what parents, then grandparents, then aunts and uncles spend on many children, it would probably be around that. The OP has said that's its only £150 from her...

Why bash a stranger on the Internet you don't know. Am I not allowed to spend my hard earned money on my child regardless if it's £400 or £40

OP I was going to tell you to ignore the people aghast at the amount of money you spend on your child at Christmas. Until I saw your 'poor kids' comment.

I can't stand the that's a waste/kids will be spoiled/you just buy tat comments usually, which in my case is far from the case.

But yeah 'poor kids' is a nobhead comment.

I spend more on my child by the way than you do and would be subjected to arsey comments if I was to broadcast it but yeah 'your poor kids' if you're only spending 400!

I agree 100%! I saw the OP in a completely different light when I read the “poor kids” comment. It was spiteful and the OP should be ashamed. I’m sure the person who the comment was aimed at has a polite, courteous child(ren) who is grateful for what is given and is on track to be a responsible, hard working adult!

I was thinking this too tbh. My 7 year old wants a couple of Switch games, a nerf gun and new football boots. But it’s quite sweet really if OPs DD still plays with those kinds of toys. No issue with the price here, I could easily spend £400 by the time i buy what he’s asked for, a few surprised and some books and stocking things.

YeahWellWhyNot · 06/10/2024 08:03

OP are some of these going in a stocking? Genuinely curious. I have a list for my 3 but their stockings are smaller bits (keyrings, an akedo figure and such like) similar to what will go in their advent calendar.

BTW no judgement from me, Christmas is your own imo. Always going to be told you are right or wrong by someone

EspanaPorfavor · 06/10/2024 08:04

maintaining your home - I mean where does she keep it all?

im not judging, im in awe. My dd has bookshelves completely full and piles of books/jigsaws/craft kits on top, a chest full of cuddly toys and an IKEA unit full of other toys and she gets about a fifth of your dds list and it’s still all overflowing. Does it get thrown away before the next Xmas? Do you donate a lot? Or resell?

Thefaceofboe · 06/10/2024 08:06

God, people can be so awful and judgy. Very weird behaviour when you don’t know anything else about the OP to be making such assumptions.

I can’t afford to spend that much on my children but my first thought was what a lovely list of presents.

Exactly this.

I may add books to make her pile even bigger !!

Sums up OP completely. Choose a book because it's educational, wanted by the child, thoughtful, not plastic junk?....No, any purchase of books is to make the pile even bigger.

@HaveYouSeenRain if the list, three months in advance has been posted on social media, I think it's fairly safe to say the "pile" will be doing the rounds.

FuckMiniBabybells · 06/10/2024 08:14

She will have a wonderful Christmas 😊 and so will you seeing her excitement at all her goodies 😁
Don't pay attention to the mayor mc'scrooges. It always seems to be a competition on here about who buys their kids the least, who's children are most grateful, or who opens their presents the latest. It's weird.

17caterpillars1mouse · 05/10/2024 22:04

I haven't bought it all yet but thinking for dd8

  • Lego dreamz village set
  • a weaving loom
  • 1 pokemon funko pop
  • Animagic axolotl
  • Pokemon Scarlet game
  • A dragon themed board game (requested but not researched this yet)
  • Pile of 3 or 4 books

Stocking:

  • small bag of crystals/ gem stones
  • dinosaur highlighters pens from Next
  • kids joke book
  • panda rubbers
  • dinosaur glitter stickers
  • chocolate
  • soft toy
  • a few pin badges

Trying to cut down this year

This is my kind of list too! Good shout.

Any wonder the OP has snapped back with nasty comments like this on her thread. Who gives a shit if she does make a tiktok? Just because MNers like to stick by the rule of 4 doesn’t mean you can sneer at anyone who buys their kids more and make presumptions about them.

Newyearnewnameagain20 · 06/10/2024 08:22

Awumminnscotland · 05/10/2024 22:26

Why does it bother people so much how much, how little or what present choices other people decide for their child/ children? Genuinely, in what way does it affect you? Do you honestly make morally ,economically, and socially conscientious decisions regarding your children at all times? If so kudos to you but in my experience most people do not do that the majority of the time and especially not at Christmas.

I think it’s people being concerned about the planet really. At the end of the day we’re all impacted by plastic waste and overconsumption. I’m not an angel myself, btw, but you did ask why people care . I think it genuinely makes a lot of people feel anxious more than judgey as such

HaveYouSeenRain · 06/10/2024 08:23

I don’t know what rule of 4 means. The point of this list was to show off and sneer at “poor children” who won’t get as many presents. The Op herself was quite mean to a poster who said she couldn’t afford that much.

DD1 is a bit younger but she needs a new scooter, which is £170, but it feels like a bit of a rubbish main gift as she already has a scooter, just has outgrown it. So we will probably end up spending quite a bit on her this year just as the expensive present is more of a practical thing. If it was the first scooter she was getting it would feel better I think! But she is looking forward to getting a new one and it is a bit fancier than the old one so still worth doing for Xmas I think as she doesn't need it quite yet.

Usual assortment of Pokemon plushies and merch, loads of craft kits and stuff, some books, some clothes (Pokemon most likely!), and we are going to the panto and the ballet. Oh and she really wants a slime kit, so I'll grit my teeth and sort that! And stocking with usual bits: Pokemon cards, funny little bits I've been collecting through the year, sweeties, she loves a lip balm, requisite satsuma in the toe!

Not got a clue for my 2yo though. We've got all the big ticket stuff already and don't want to buy stuff for the sake of it.

FWIW it’s worth I just got my second child something small and fairly token for their first and second Christmases when they didn’t need anything. It was more so their older sibling didn’t feel sad for them tbh! Obviously they’ve got more stuff as they’ve got older!

Nope, the poster did not say she could not afford as much for her children. She said 'madness for the OP to buy thus much'. That poster was judgey, so the OP snapped back. Rightly so

Only understandable comments are climate based. Otherwise, really stupid to judge what someone else buys for their kids at Christmas or any other time. How bizzare

debbiewest0 · 06/10/2024 08:37

Where does the weaving loom come from please, that sounds creative!

Why would you think of that.

LynetteScavo · 06/10/2024 08:46

If you save all year for it, I guess she doesn't get much the rest of the year. poor kid

I'm just here to see what 8yo's are getting. Personally we always go for one big expensive thing from parents, smaller gifts from aunts uncles, grandparents etc, and small stocking fillers.

WickerMam · 06/10/2024 09:00

He was 8, i think. It has been his most used xmas present. At the time the kids kindle came with 1 year free Kids subscription too.

I do still end up buying books - kindle unlimited has lots of e.g. 50 book series of self published minecraft fan fiction, etc, which he likes but is just shite really. But he always seems to find something.

We also got a kindle 2 years ago with the unlimited subscription for a year. Often they go on sale around Black Friday. My DC loves hers and handy for travelling and holidays.

Balaclava1000 · 06/10/2024 09:49

My 8 year old DD has asked for a nerf gun, a lava lamp, a baby doll and a harry potter note book. I am still trying to find a space for all the birthday present crap so am super glad my DD isn't into 'stuff' and isn't massively materialistic.

MemphisBluesAgain · 06/10/2024 11:07

@Balaclava1000 DD is similar but it's sometimes a double edged sword - she's hopeless at coming up with suggestions. Last year's "list" was a dustpan and brush and a "cute reindeer mask". Hence I enjoy these threads.

17caterpillars1mouse · 06/10/2024 14:12

@debbiewest0

I've bought the weaving loom set from hobbycraft (they have £5 off a £15+ spend atm on their website with a code advertised on their site). It was £16 down to £11 with code and free click and collect
