That's so rude.

It’s easy to buy them at that age, dd 12 is super easy but it is harder than previous years. We also go bigger at Christmas, birthdays are a budget of £150 and we always go out for meal or get takeaway of birthday girl/boy choice.
ignore the ‘too many’ comments, it’s your money your child, like I tell people, I work hard, if I want to spend money on my kids, then I will with no guilt. I don’t drink or smoke, I don’t get my nails done every 2 months. Guess what my child isn’t a spoilt brat and appreciates literally anything I buy her from a kinder bueno to an IPad.
dd12 is getting

Nintendo switch + games
Wednesday lego x 3
Wednesday cushion
Wednesday hooded fleece
ty beanies
kylie Jenner lip gloss
sabrina carpenter body mist
sol de janeiro set pink
books
lush
sabrina carpenter record (from DS)
sabrina carpenter concert tickets (from my mum and sister)

ds16 is notoriously hard to buy for but I’m actually doing okay, it’s his stocking I’m struggling with.
so far he has
an Apple Watch,
an Eminem hoody
40 years of music vinyl
my sister is buying him abba voyage tickets
I’ve also just ordered his phone for his birthday just after Christmas as I got a fantastic deal that I couldn’t afford to pass up…

DD1 is a bit younger but she needs a new scooter, which is £170, but it feels like a bit of a rubbish main gift as she already has a scooter, just has outgrown it. So we will probably end up spending quite a bit on her this year just as the expensive present is more of a practical thing. If it was the first scooter she was getting it would feel better I think! But she is looking forward to getting a new one and it is a bit fancier than the old one so still worth doing for Xmas I think as she doesn't need it quite yet.

Usual assortment of Pokemon plushies and merch, loads of craft kits and stuff, some books, some clothes (Pokemon most likely!), and we are going to the panto and the ballet. Oh and she really wants a slime kit, so I'll grit my teeth and sort that! And stocking with usual bits: Pokemon cards, funny little bits I've been collecting through the year, sweeties, she loves a lip balm, requisite satsuma in the toe!

Not got a clue for my 2yo though. We've got all the big ticket stuff already and don't want to buy stuff for the sake of it.

My nearly 2 year old loves fisher price little people toys and construction toys like stickle bricks, magnetic tiles etc

We are also getting some summer toys ready .

I actually like these threads and find them useful. I'm getting DD:

• a sew your own teddy bear kit (her request)

  • a really lovely book about dragons
  • a science kit I saw on a MN "best toys" list
  • a board game (tbc)
  • a jellyfish light for her room

Plus some stocking fillers e.g. top trumps, a small Gravitrax add-on. A lush bath bomb is a good shout. Relatives will probably get her books or Lego. Plus we are going to the theatre and ice-skating at Somerset House (but we do those every year).

Our 8 soon to be 9 yr old loves the Sushi Go Party game. It’s essentially a card game but the scores are marked on a board.

I also find these threads really useful, whether I can afford to spend the same as OP or not, the ideas are actually super helpful.

Oh, bubble tea kits are MASSIVE at the mo.

MummySam2017 · 05/10/2024 23:07

Awumminnscotland · 05/10/2024 22:06

Ooh! Stitch monopoly! Thanks for that idea op.

Ditto!

didistutter56 · 05/10/2024 23:16

Christ, you lot would hate me. I have one DD, she’s turning 9 right before Christmas and I spend about £600 for her birthday and Xmas. Only one child and I’ll spend what I please on her. She’ll also be getting a new phone this year (yes she has a phone, to keep in touch with me whilst she’s at her dads, and contact some family members who live on the opposite side of the family.)

Birthdays I always do themed, last year was stitch (so everything was blue), this year it’s Olivia Rodrigo so everything will be purple. Cake, balloons, every present is some shade of purple. It’s a few days before Christmas so everything else that’s not themed gets given for Christmas.

On the to buy list is :

  • uggs
  • jacqueline Wilson books
  • worst witch books
  • crocs
  • new pjs/dressing gown
  • clothes
  • little bits of make-up + skincare (older cousins have got her into it)
  • fidget toys
  • instax film
  • Art supplies (posca pens etc)
  • squishmallows
  • lush bath bomb set
  • a new scooter
  • nintendo switch games

Hopingforno2in2024 · 05/10/2024 21:01

At the moment I am planning the following for DS8

Stocking:
Pack of yoto cards
Pack of Pokémon cards
Can of coke
Chocolate coins
Mini silicone kitchen utensils
Hot chocolate on a stick

Under tree:
Hamper of his favourite food and drink stuff
Voucher for a day out
A switch game

From family he will probably receive books, board games and some clothes. Nothing massive. He isn't really into toys or crafts sadly.

Can of Coke is a genius idea! DD would explode with joy if she found one in her stocking.

For the PP who mentioned the Bitzee, my DD loves hers.

fourelementary · 05/10/2024 23:19

It’s the Christmas section where we all spend probably more money than is needed although we try to make and share savings… a lot of stuff let’s face it isn’t economical or educational and could well be thought of as tat. But we also know the joy of Christmas here and enjoy buying and giving gifts. People spend thousands on holidays and experiences. Or many spend thousands on hair/nails/makeup/alcohol etc each year… each to their own…if spending money at Xmas is what makes you happy then go for it. Lots of nice ideas and suggestions here… ignore the nasty comments about spoilt kids- stuff doesn’t spoil kids, actions and behaviours do.

mamamilkmachine · 05/10/2024 23:27

@didistutter56 I love the coloured birthday theme idea!

Retrogamer · 05/10/2024 23:54

We all give each other 3 gifts. DS gets 4 technically one is from 'Santa'
The gifts can vary in price, so long as we stick to the 3 gift limit.
DS1 & baby will likely receive gifts from family too. And I will disclose he gets a stocking with chocolate and figit toys too.

ChristmasIsComing2024 · 05/10/2024 23:58

Why does it bother people so much how much people spend/how many gifts they buy for Christmas?
I’ve got my 3 year old 21 gifts for Christmas so far. They’re mainly little things including sweets and clothes/shoes and books and I’ve spent £81. He will be getting more as there’s still a few clothes/shoes with his favourite characters on and a couple of toys that I want to get him. He will probably open them all over a few weeks.

My partner has 18 gifts so far coming up to £166. I always go big for Christmas and birthdays 🤷‍♀️

I'm unmoved. It was a very silly comment. If it was intended to be nasty towards me it only came across as laughable.

FountainofTruth · 06/10/2024 00:11

PMAmostofthetime · 05/10/2024 22:53

It's not about what you buy them it's about teaching them to be grateful, not expect things and the value of money.

Oh I thought it was a christmas thread sharing gift ideas for 8yr olds.

I'm not really one for judging others on the way they do christmas. My parents went a bit ott at christmas when I was a child and I'd like to think I've turned out OK.

HyggeTyggeDotCom · 06/10/2024 00:34

We put into a savings pot all year so that we can Splash out a bit without feeling guilty (and I wouldn’t let strangers in an anonymous thread make me feel that way for doing so!)

my dd is also 8 and so far I’ve bought an LOL OMG doll, squishmallow, and a hello kitty onesie from H&M. The main thing she would like is a skateboard and she has also asked for a cookez toastie whatever one of those is. I’m currently knitting her a griffindor scarf, she will get a decoration for her little bedroom tree, some books and some craft bits. If I see things I know she will love I’ll pick them up, but mostly waiting for her list now. We will go ice skating between Christmas and new year too. I can’t wait!

Wheelz46 · 06/10/2024 06:42

@didistutter56 I would be hated on here too, I also spend a lot on my kids at Christmas and why shouldn't we if we can afford it?

They maybe considered spoilt but they are appreciative of what they receive and it certainly hasn't made them entitled. They definitely understand the meaning of money.

I love Christmas, I love wrapping and I love they have a load of presents to open, I buy things I know they would like/enjoy, nothing has ever gone to waste or popped in a cupboard never to be seen again.

If anything were to change money wise for us, my kids would understand this and would appreciate whatever they received however big or small.

We all celebrate Christmas in different ways, there is no wrong way.

Hopingforno2in2024 · 06/10/2024 07:02

I put it in as a bit of a last minute thing last year @Rainallnight and I think it was his favourite gift of all 🤣

Do you not really struggle with maintaining a home with all that stuff?

I am not a minimalist at all but try really hard not to get loads of plastic and big toys for dc because it constantly feels like I’m wading through toys and they don’t have that much. Presumably your list isn’t a one off and she got similar last Xmas, birthdays etc..?

However it’s a great inspiration list as I have a 7 year old, so thank you! So far I’m thinking for her::

Heelys
personalised sweets/biscuits
colouring books
glitter pens
strong girls club sweatshirt
spinning top (they’re the current fad)
polly pocket (great for traveling!)

She gets more at christmas than birthday and she knows this. She is young so most items are pretty cheap. I like to treat my daughter at Christmas as it's a magical time for her and our family - is isn't entitled and appreciates every gift

That's a lot. I'd cut it right down starting with the pen creator kit which is absolutely shit......got it for my dd's 8th birthday and it really is single use plastic at its worst!

Oh is it I thought it looked cool and she really into crafty things. Ill have to replace with something better :)
