Thanks for the weaving loom idea. I’ve just ordered one for my 12 year old.

@debbiewest0

I've bought the weaving loom set from hobbycraft (they have £5 off a £15+ spend atm on their website with a code advertised on their site). It was £16 down to £11 with code and free click and collect

Thank you! I shall have a look

Can I ask why you have listed this on Mumsnet? Is it a showing off thing? Does it not seem a bit, well, crass to you? Sad for people who are barely scraping by.

Lots of people do this in the Christmas thread to give others idea's.

It's been done for years, I find it useful. Especially as I don't have a child this age but I need to buy for one.

I think the difference is most people looking for ideas will start threads looking for ideas, or join someone else's thread "what do I buy an 8yr old who likes swimming and dancing" for example.

The ones like this, "look at allllll this stuff I've got/I'm getting my kid, what do you all think, I might add more to it" are very much not in the same spirit. And that's why OP is getting the replies she is. It is crass. Particularly with the "your poor kids" and snideness at anyone pointing it out.

stayathomer · 06/10/2024 21:47

Op you get your child that much for Christmas and then birthdays/ surprises will a as leats have to be ‘go big or go home’! Some, in particular sylvanian families jump out because most kids would be so happy getting them and keep them for ever, but then why a billion other things? Even half that list is an amazing amount of toys!!

Awumminnscotland · 06/10/2024 21:52

I agree with the above. It's a feature every year, often under the title of what have you got so far your kids or similar. I like them for ideas and enjoy seeing the variety of gifts given. It's not new on mn.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 06/10/2024 22:04

You were lucky.
We used to get, in our stocking:
an orange,
a small bag of toffees,
a hoop and stick,
some whooping cough medicine,
and a piece of coal.
If we was lucky.

Often the stocking would have t'ole in it and the coal would fall out and we would have to huddle round a candle to keep warm before the cold mutton slop was served up.

But we was 'appy. In them days.

User12356 · 06/10/2024 22:09

It is a lot of stuff and you are very organised. I am sure your daughter will be very happy though.
I would be concerned she might change her mind about what she wants between now and then. But you obviously know your daughter best.
Also personally I prefer to spread the gifts more between birthday and Christmas as my kids interests change so much during a year that something then love at Christmas they will be bored of a few months later. My daughter changed so much between 8 and 9.
So much stuff all at once would be overwhelming for a lot of children but again you know your daughter best.
It's amazing how all families are different. My kids usually ask for 2/3 things plus a surprise for Christmas and they are very happy with that. But they get the same for birthdays and will get small things throughout the year.
No criticism of you though, you sound like a kind and thoughtful mum. And your daughter sounds wonderful. Can you send her to my house to show my kids how to clean up after themselves?!

HiThereBatFace · 06/10/2024 22:11

Poor you OP. You've sadly encountered a lot of jealousy and weirdness on your post - bizarre really, considering it's on the Christmas section where people talk about err .. what Christmas gifts they're buying (in the main)

I'm one of those who also spends bomb on Christmas although my children are both grown up now. I still spend lots and still do a big pile under the tree and I'm perfectly happy with my choices

People could choose to scroll on by your thread but there's no fun in that is there?

Has someone posted that tedious little poem yet about what you SHOULD be buying? You know, the one with about 4 allowed items Grin

Garlicnaan · 06/10/2024 22:12

Mamabobogo · 05/10/2024 18:16

Far far too much!

quite obscene IMO!!

Agree. Consumerism is out of control.

We all love our kids so let's think of their future and the planet before buying 26 mostly plastic gifts for them.

A candle!?? You were lucky.

We had a box of small matches, containing only one match which we had to light at the eleventh hour to cook our bean for tea.

We had it good

HolyMoly24 · 07/10/2024 10:04

Ooh thank you for putting Tiny Tasties on my radar my daughter would love those

GettingStuffed · 07/10/2024 10:52

Won't that be a bit overwhelming? If I were you I'd spread them out over the 12 days of Christmas so she has less to process each day

SilverDoe · 07/10/2024 11:48

I get you OP, plus when you factor in that that is split between 4 households, it's definitely in line with what is expected.

It's funny because I am struggling a bit in recent years and was googling if 10 presents total was enough at Christmas. There were so many articles and forum posts saying categorically that it wasn't enough!

My DC won't be getting the quantity that yours is, but dammit I am spending £300 per child which I save all year for. Prices are just so high these days.

I am adding the tiny tasties kit and Hello Kitty perfume to my DD's list so thank you!

SilverDoe · 07/10/2024 11:50

And yes to be honest, gift buying ideas for my DC are the absolute #1 reason I spend so much time on the MN Christmas boards.

My DD loves squishmallows yet I hadn't even heard of Squishalongs, she will be thrilled.

Why do you need the internet to tell you what is acceptable? It's entirely up to you and your family.

We do 1-2 presents from us plus stockings (which are definite stockings, nothing that doesn't fit in a stocking) and only stockings are from Father Christmas. We get wider family to stick to one present as well as it's just overwhelming otherwise. What blog posts say about whether that's "enough" is immaterial.

True, but we are the only providers as we don't really have any extended family, and it was important to me to do something that felt in line with some kind of norm or average. This was years ago now and I was a young mum with my first so I didn't have many references to what other people were doing. I don't need to be judged for wanting to know what other people were doing, thanks. And it's clear I'm not the only one as similar conversations crop up every single year.

I'm just pointing out that people are heavily criticising the OP, but also give quite strong criticism the other way, so essentially, don't worry what others thing.

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 07/10/2024 13:54

My 9 year old is getting toys. She’d be confused if I bought her face creams or a white fox hoodie and wonder if she received someone else’s present.

My niece who is also 9 will be asking for face creams, a white fox hoodie, makeup and clothing.

Not all 9 years old have migrated to the teen years. Mine still loves toys. She got a bluey dolls house last year and adores it. Her baby sister can have it when she’s done with it.

This is actually obscene, and tidally overwhelming. One segment of an orange is enough. Really, this just seems like showing off.

ShortColdandGrey · 09/10/2024 13:04

I have this for my DD as well. I am thinking of adding the colouring companion book to my list.

SilverDoe · 10/10/2024 12:40

I highly recommend the Dragonology book; I had it as a child myself and bought a new copy for my own DC at Christmas a couple of years ago; it's fantastic!

It's a shame as they used to have a proper companion "fieldwork" book, but I cannot find it in stock anywhere anymore.

I don't know why people are being sniffy about a list posted in the xmas section.

It's a long list, but if your DC doesn't want a high value item, you end up with more small things.

I don't think it is all plastic shite either. There are loads of consumables - slime, aquabeads, art bits, play doh, cosmetics. These are the sort of thing some people would just replace mid-year, as needed. There are also things like a lamp and soft toys that should last for ages.

And as for "no books", then so what? Maybe the DC doesn't enjoy reading. Or maybe OP just buys books when wanted! Xmas presents shouldn't be about what you think your children should want. (I say that as the parent of a child who reads for hours per day, but has a kindle unlimited subscription - there will be no books on his list).

And i have a pretty firm idea of what my kids will be getting, even though it is october! I have a gap or two in case of changed minds, but i know fine well what they will ask for.

I was thinking similar and especially the same about the books!

We used to buy books as and when needed, but then DD got really into reading and it became really expensive - so we (or just I as I work down the road) literally go to the library every week... I usually have to order in the ones she wants, but there's literally nothing I haven't been able to get, so don't buy books any more. Obviously I would if there was one she really wanted to keep, and I probably will get her one nicer one for Christmas (she likes the Spin to Survive series and the WW2 diary someone mentioned sounds good), but the amount she reads at the moment, the library is much better. I can't believe I didn't take advantage of it properly before.
