I've recenty found this lovely song and wondered what other gems are out there that get ignored in favour of the well known (overplayed) Christmas songs.

Any suggestions?🎄🎅🏻

Great one for younger kids!

Waitingfordoggo · 20/11/2023 08:19

I really like this one but it’s definitely an acquired taste and I can imagine lots of people finding it unbearable to listen to 😂

Same Auld Lang Syne by Dan Fogelberg, a true story about bumping into an exgf just before Christmas.

Whinge · 20/11/2023 08:21

@LittleMousewithcloggson That's brilliant. I've worked with children for more years that I want to admit, and have never heard it. 🤣

@Waitingfordoggo I've heard that one before. You're right, it's definitely an acquired taste. Grin

White wine in the sun by Tim Minchin. Not as obscure as the others listed but a nice take on a family Christmas. The downside: it has been known to make me cry (if I’ve taken too much white wine in the sun).

Whinge · 20/11/2023 08:31

@MinnieCauldwell That's lovely.

Must be Santa...Bob Dylan. The video is surreal.

Black Xmas...Poly Styrene

Not comic or anything, but Kate Rusby singing Sweet Bells is fab

knackeredcat · 20/11/2023 08:39

A lesser played oldie - Dennis Waterman and George Cole in character as Terry McCann and Arfur Daley from Minder, a bit surreal to see them on the Beeb 😁

I just love Gordon Lightfoot’s Winter’s Night, so soft and mellow.

Also love Dan Fogelberg’s one - I thought it was Another Auld Lang Syne though?

Benjamin Britten This Little Babe
It needs a full choir but still sends shivers down my spine 55 years after we sang it at school!

We used to sing a sing at school in the 1980s that went "Mine was a ref and green Christmas, a Scarlett poinsietta Christmas, a sea green honey palm Christmas...". I havn't heard that since I left school I don't think, but it was in a proper book, not made up by "Sir".

horseymum · 20/11/2023 08:56

Was just going to suggest the hippo one, a favourite in our house! Kate Ruby does it. She has several Christmas albums with some lesser known songs on. Anna Lapwood ( organist and composer, conductor) has some beautiful Christmas albums, have a look on apple classical. I love Christmas music, I might get started now!

I love this thread, will be listening to these. My favourite it Jamie Cullum’s Pianoman at Christmas album. Hang your lights is what we listen to when putting up the tree. https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_l2OUDxb10bQWT47S0J01FFwGWPd0_veoY
