Have I missed the Hallmark/Netflix/ Amazon prime thread on all those cheesy Prince from (insert unlikely name for snowy European country) meets girl from New York films?

Anyone share my guilty pleasure of these so awful they’re good films?

please tell me I’m not the only one here.

Can I ask what your favourite cheesy Christmas films are? I have friends over for a movie night tomorrow, but I only started tracking them this year as I always forget which ones I've watched! I want to really give them the proper Hallmark experience. The most typical city girl returns to small town but oh no there's a snow storm and she has to stay and organise the annual Christmas ball with a man who hates Christmas type thing. I have Prime and Disney Plus (as well as Channel 5 etc.)

LostFrog · 02/12/2023 19:15

@toastofthetown I watched An Evergreen Christmas today on 5 and really enjoyed it x can I come? That sounds like a great evening!

EwwSprouts · 02/12/2023 21:29

@toastofthetown Christmas in Evergreen ticks your boxes. Christmas Joy features the Christmas cookie trail.

JewelleryCat · 03/12/2023 13:30

I’m watching Unlocking Christmas on C5 and enjoying it 🎄

Raahh · 03/12/2023 13:55

I watched the new Eddie Murphy film on Prime- Candy Cane Lane - earlier.

It was ok, a bit long really- and light on the 'cheese' . No snow/cookies/saving inn from closure, but ticked some boxes- losing job near Christmas/ competition between neighbours over house decorations / 12 days of Christmas references. Everyone seemed to have Christmas themed names.

Decent cast , but missing something. It is not really a Hallmark style 'cheese' film and not one I put on my 'top Christmas Film tier' list.

Passed the time while I did the ironing. Grin

Talisin · 03/12/2023 15:03

@Raahh Thanks - I’m due to have a Watch Party for Candy Cane Lane in an hour and I like to have an idea of what I’m letting myself in for beforehand!

Raahh · 03/12/2023 15:17
Grin It wasn't the worst film I've seen. And it made a change from Sister Swap.

I'm watching Scrooged now. It's too cold to move.

Great! Christmas has The Spirit of Christmas on at 2pm today (or 3pm on +1). If you’ve not seen it, it’s a Christmas ghost story, but romantic rather than scary, the leads have great chemistry and it’s a nice twist on the too-busy-for-romance career woman meets grumpy-not-interested-in-romance-either guy. Oh and it stars which doesn’t hurt!

The writer of this also wrote The Snow Bride which someone mentioned earlier in the thread, just as good but very different.

Ohh I was trying to remember this one . I knew there was a bad tempered ghost and a ballroom dance but not any more .

Is there a wishing well/ water well or is that something my brain made up ?

CrackersCheeseAndWinePlease · 03/12/2023 16:12

We watched Candy Cane Lane last night, I didn't like it to be honest, no snow in a Christmas film is a no from me 😂
We're currently watching The Nightmare Before Christmas for the millionth time, not my favourite but dd likes it.

If there’s a well then I think it can be only in the establishing shots of the house. It doesn’t play a part in the story anyway. It’s on again on Tuesday at 10/11am on Great! Christmas and +1 i f you want to check though!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 03/12/2023 20:47

"This Is Christmas" was recommended upthread , watched it today .

It;s one if those yes I know what's going to happen here films , a bit "Love Actually" with some lovely views of London at Christmas .

Enjoyed it Xmas Grin

IceAndLemonPlease · 08/12/2023 21:45

“Snowed in” Really enjoyed this one although the girls in it reminded me of two that I have lost contact with so made me a bit sad.

FinallyFinalGirl · 08/12/2023 21:49

OT but I've kind of moved onto ghost stories now....I always get like this when Christmas approaches. I want the spooky, scary films and watch the light Christmassy films a bit less. Right now I'm watching the John Hurt version of Whistle and I'll Come to You.

Raahh · 09/12/2023 08:56

I've got to the point with the Christmas channels where they seem to have been showing the same dozen films on rotation since October several times in the same day - and I wouldn't mind so much if the they were some of the 'older' ones. They all seem to have been made since 2020. And there seems to be a very large number of 'Country' Christmas movies/lots of singers this year- as in Nashville type country, not cows and stuff Grin.

I don't know how much is to do with the CBB/Great American Family controversy -a fair number of her films have still been on - but I've tracked down some of my favourites and discovered they are on things like ITVX and not nearly as many on Christmas 24 this year.

ThePlantKiller · 09/12/2023 16:57

Just watched Christmas at the Drive-In on Netflix which has Danica McKellar. Lawyer returns to home town to take up a new job, her ex returns also to try and sell off the drive-in he inherited from his late dad. I really liked this one, anyone else watched it?

Mountaindhew · 09/12/2023 17:38

No but I've downloaded it now.

NormaLouiseBates · 10/12/2023 08:34

I really enjoyed Noelle, it's on Disney. Not your traditional cheesy "girl meets boy and falls in love" Christmas film... more along the lines of The Santa Claus type films. But Anna Kendrick is wonderful in it and it brought a little tear to my eye at the end 😭❤️

Raahh · 10/12/2023 12:12

Channel 5 is bringing out one of the 'proper' Christmas big guns this afternoon- 'Miracle on 34th Street' the classic Maureen O'Hara /Natalie Wood/Edmund Gwenn version from 1947. This is one of my 'present wrapping' films Grin.

I much prefer it to the Attenborough re-make- Mara Wilson was just too annoying in that version for me.

Mountaindhew · 10/12/2023 12:43

I enjoyed The Shoe Addict's Christmas- on Prime. Much better than the title would suggest and with the great Jean Smart.

countdowntonap · 10/12/2023 12:48

Surviving Christmas.
2004. Ben Affleck.
It’s on Prime

JFDIYOLO · 10/12/2023 13:30

I utterly adore Christmas movies. Luckily so does my OH. The cheesier and more formulaic the better, like the writer gets issued a spreadsheet with all the things to tick off. We discovered them only a few years ago when we were both sick and couldn't move off the sofa and that was it. At least one a night in December. (NOT before; like mince pies.)

Possimpible · 10/12/2023 16:49

@Raahh I'm childfree, but Mara Wilson in Miracle on 34th Street is the one thing that makes me think maybe I want one some day! I find her adorable in it

housethatbuiltme · 10/12/2023 20:17

You know whats a great one?

That one where a woman whose super busy living life gets peer pressured into going home for an awkward family Xmas. She then breaks down and gets stalked by a creepy mechanic but everyone tells her its 'cute' because hes 'such a nice guy' and then she gets gaslighted and bullied into giving up her freedom and being a 1950s housewife.

Maybe this thread isn't for me as I find most Christmas films suck, they always try way to hard to be funny or sappy.

If I was going to watch some it would have to be cheesy B list horrors, they are far less creepy than the romance film and far less cringe than the 'comedies' and at least not preachy.

Any recommendations appreciated my 15 year old is asking too watch some, we have already seen Krampus. I fancy 'Silent Night, Deadly Night 2' from its famed 'garbage day' line but welcome more ideas (bonus if they are on Prime or Netflix).

Talisin · 10/12/2023 21:11

@housethatbuiltme If you haven’t already seen it, Violent Night is brilliant. I watched There’s Something in the Barn earlier today and that was a lot of fun (crass American’s move to Norway, piss off the Barn Elf, mayhem and murder ensues) but that’s a brand new release so you do have to pay for it.

FinallyFinalGirl · 10/12/2023 22:07

Black Christmas if you're into horror. Considered the first slasher.
