Have I missed the Hallmark/Netflix/ Amazon prime thread on all those cheesy Prince from (insert unlikely name for snowy European country) meets girl from New York films?

Anyone share my guilty pleasure of these so awful they’re good films?

please tell me I’m not the only one here.

Best new one I’ve seen this year so far is The Royal Nanny on Christmas 24. It’s supposedly set in the UK (but filmed in Belgium) and the heroine works for the security services! They’ve definitely tried to, if not break then at least bend the mould of Christmas Movies and it works surprisingly well.

smilingthroughgrittedteeth · 10/11/2023 19:57

A castle for christmas is my absolute favourite

FinallyFinalGirl · 10/11/2023 20:45

@JewelleryCat Candice Cameron Bure seems to be in dozens of the Christmas films. Think she must do at least two a year. I love seeing her different hair styles.

I must watch that this weekend. It looks lovely.

CoffeeBeansGalore · 10/11/2023 20:58

Saw one a few years ago called A Snow globe Christmas. Cliche from start to finish & lovely 😁.

Rainbowshit · 10/11/2023 21:02

Lacey Chabert is my favourite Christmas movie typecast actress. Love a cheesy Christmas movie.

PurpleSky09 · 10/11/2023 22:00

Where do you all watch the hallmark films? Are they just shown on channel 5 from now until Christmas? Sorry if a stupid question!

Talisin · 10/11/2023 22:04

C5 every afternoon, Christmas24 all day everyday until New Year, Great Movies Christmas again all day everyday (but they tend to have older ones) and most recently, That’s Christmas channel. There are also a fair few on Prime, Netflix, Paramount +. GMC and That’s Christmas are both available on Freeview.

Mountaindhew · 10/11/2023 22:14

Ooh my people. I watched The Holiday last night to get me in the mood.

My favourite are ones that have celeb angle - famous musicians gets stranded in Vermont town....you know the score!

JewelleryCat · 10/11/2023 22:20

The person who mentioned the Mrs Miracle (sorry I can’t remember your name), I love those too. @Raahh thanks for telling me what it’s called :) 🎄

Another one I liked is when the post office employ someone to write to the kids like it’s Santa writing back and it stars the guy who was in CSI:NY

@FinallyFinalGirl it must be lucrative for her though. She’s onto a winner

Mountaindhew · 10/11/2023 22:20

I don't have Sky or Virgin so can't access Christmas24 I don't think 😦

VillageFete · 10/11/2023 22:48

Oh I love these films.

I’ve only just found “That’s Christmas” Is it a new channel? I found it by chance in a London hotel room this week. Candace Cameron Bure was in a movie it was showing. Possibly the cheesiest one i’ve ever seen, but it was fabulous. It was called A Christmas… Present.

There’s been a scandal. Loads of the Hallmark actors have abandoned ship and joined a rival channel call “Great American Family” Who now
churn out the cheesiest, most wholesome festive films ever - including the one mentioned above.

Off the top of my head, Family for Christmas with Lacey Chabert in is amazing. There’s also another one called A Christmas Snow. It might be on Prime, or it’s occasionally shown on Great Christmas.

Worldgonecrazy · 10/11/2023 23:48

Thank you for the recommendation! I will share some of this years faves when I have the list in front of me as they all seem to be variations of Christmas and Prince and I get so confused, There’s one about a doctor nursing a spoiled prince with a broken leg and the actor playing the prince is so good looking it’s doesn’t look real. Lacey Chalbert is staring in one with Scott wolf who played her brother in party of 5.
Luckily he is playing her brother in this too
(Probably not being shown in uk this year, I add them onto my JustWatch app to track)

CCB’s comments were the only scandal. She basically said Hallmark had gone too inclusive and she’d gone off to make ‘traditional’ movies with GAF. In other words, straight, white, christian values. One of the male actors who’d followed her over broke ranks at that point and quit and Danica McKellar, another one who’d gone over to GAF, posted the most nauseating ‘I’m a new Christian, I’m still working things out, please don’t hate me gay people’ statement. It was all fun and games over in Christmas Movieland last year!

My absolute favourite 😻 I had it saved on my sky box and watched it every year for years but we've got a new sky box this year so it's gone Sad. I hope it's on again this year.

burnoutbabe · 11/11/2023 09:16

That's awful.

It's fair enough they don't want to star in a gay romance (though most now seem to have 2 gay bakers in the small town) but to object to those films even being made?

That's just incredibly rubbish.

(Do they also object to non white romantic leads? Or even leads of different races?)

Good news! It’s available on demand until January so you should be able to just download it to your Sky box🎅

Talisin · 11/11/2023 09:31

@burnoutbabe To be fair, no one has said anything about non caucasian leads but Hallmark itself has only started casting non white leads in the last few years - prior to that it was the black best friend trope all the way.

VillageFete · 11/11/2023 10:00

@Talisin I wonder will their movies be distributed over here as Hallmarks have? I did catch one on “That’s Christmas” but there’s been non since. It was nauseating but so good 😳

Loads of Hallmarkers have gone with CBB - Danica, Lori Loughlin, Cameron Mathison, Trevor Donovan, Paul Greene, Jill Wagner…

VillageFete · 11/11/2023 10:07

Did “The Christmas house” Kick all this off in 2020? Because they had a gay relationship at the forefront?

Treat Williams was in it. Lovely movie. And I see nothing wrong with inclusivity?! I guess CBB felt that direction didn’t align with her Christian values? I don’t think there’s anything particularly Christian about not accepting same sex couples.

burnoutbabe · 11/11/2023 10:29

Oh I watched Christmas house at mums. That was lovely too!

It's on hallmark sub in uk per JustWatch so May have to see what a hallmark subscription is!

I have Virgin, so watch then on Great!Xmas movies and Christmas 24 (channels 419/420 -424 ish Grin). Not sure what the Sky version will be. Channel 5 seem to repeat whatever has already been shown on there at the weekend. They are fond of showing the Christmas Train - a lot
Grin.

Annoyingly, rather than show some of the 'older' one (that aren't that old) more of the newer ones just keep getting repeated- a 'sister swap' one involving a restaurant and cinema - must have been on twice weekly !

VillageFete · 11/11/2023 10:33

@Raahh I love The Christmas Train 🤣 Oh there’s a lovely one with Charlotte from Sex and the City in it “A Heavenly Christmas” I’m sure it’s often on C5

Raahh · 11/11/2023 10:38

There was a pretty long thread last year, where we discussed all the Christmas cheesy films, and put together a plot for what the ultimate Hallmark cliche film would be . It was very funny.

I have 'tiers' of Christmas films- things like 'It's a Wonderful Life/Polar Express' are for present wrapping /Christmas eve, Elf / Jingle All the way are December films- but DD2 and I will watch Nativity! and Arthur Christmas in April, if we can get away with it. Grin
But the Hallmark cheesy types can really be watched any time, they are just romances with hot chocolate, cookies and fake snow Grin.
