Matchmakers - did they think we wouldn't notice!

Can't believe it....just opened the traditional mint Matchmakers for Christmas. They have only gone and stuck them inside a plastic tray inside the cardboard box in a disguised effort so they are now smaller in length! The matchmakers don't even touch the sides inside the plastic tray.

Over 40 years now I've had these and they always go the width of the box with a black cover over them.

Feel like there should be some law to say that they must put some warning sign on the packaging for three months or so if they make things smaller or change the recipe. I bought this box in good faith as it's the same size as previous years but they didn't tell me they were smaller! I wouldn't have bought them.

Anyone else noticed changes to their favourite Christmas treats or food?

The Five Centres Bar put me in mind of Fry’s Five Boys Chocolate (now you would have to be old to remember that)….

I am and I do!

😂

Metabigot · 20/12/2022 10:23

After eight sticks are a good alternative to mint match makers and sufficiently long!

I've now been googling layered boxes of chocolates.£60! For the ones I found.
It did remind me of my gran though bless her.to try give us luxury chocolate she would give us "layers" via this:

I get my biscuits from Ringtins and can confirm that their stuff - regular and seasonal - is lovely and their customer service is excellent.

<looks round hopefully for a complimentary packet of ginger nuts as a <thank you'>

That's awful!

Your poor gran.

Was he prosecuted? B*stards like that are vile.

You can get Ringtons online, you know . . . if you are really desperate for what is probably the World's Best Ginger Biscuit.

(Their tea-towels are very absorbent, too)

We were "assured he would be dealt wirh" and chose to believe them.at the time we were just so wrapped up in grans spiralling we couldn t take on chasing it.but looking back wish we had.as I'm sure we've seen him on the route again.and there is alot of elderly folk round there.

Hehe you can never have enough t- towels.

What I miss about the big Christmas tins of chocolates was the lovely smell of chocolate and wrapper (foil and cellophane) the first time you opened them. We'd all crowd round to take a sniff as it was one of the signs that Christmas had started in our house.

I also miss digging my hands into the tin, and the cellophane having a lovely soft feel, and the chocolates' gentle squeak as they moved against each other.

Even the plastic isn't the same now, and chocolates don't have a smell anymore even if you unwrap them and hold them close to your nose.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 22/12/2022 08:14

YES!!! That glorious overwhelming chocolatey smell that used to hit you as soon as you opened the lid. It shouted that you were in for a proper treat, rather than just a (possibly disappointing) sugar rush that you've been conditioned into believing over many years will be amazing. I'd completely forgotten that that was ever a thing.

GeorgeA12 · 22/12/2022 14:23

You used to get the same smell from selection boxes too and the bars were full size!

Goss i remover that smell now not had it forward. Christmas was tins and I mean big tins next year I’m not going to bother with cheap chocolate I’d rather save and my sweet treats from F and M.

@RiderOfTheBlue just came back to find your post. I've just seen in Food Warehouse/Iceland the Mr Kipling lemon slices with icing on!

RiderOfTheBlue · 28/12/2022 16:36

@Blossomandbee thank you, I guess there will be some older stock still knocking around.

Adviceneeded200 · 28/12/2022 16:38

@starfishmummy

I remember them short matchstick length too!

In a long box.....
