Matchmakers - did they think we wouldn't notice!

Can't believe it....just opened the traditional mint Matchmakers for Christmas. They have only gone and stuck them inside a plastic tray inside the cardboard box in a disguised effort so they are now smaller in length! The matchmakers don't even touch the sides inside the plastic tray.

Over 40 years now I've had these and they always go the width of the box with a black cover over them.

Feel like there should be some law to say that they must put some warning sign on the packaging for three months or so if they make things smaller or change the recipe. I bought this box in good faith as it's the same size as previous years but they didn't tell me they were smaller! I wouldn't have bought them.

Anyone else noticed changes to their favourite Christmas treats or food?

I think the most reliable is lindt truffles.in terms of consistency. But they still aren't a special box of chocolates.i have none that come to mind if I were to be asked what a really nice selection box is.makes me sad.as even before roses felt special.but now it's all just a bit meh, changed,or poor excuse for chocolate.
Mum had guylian the other day and saidthey were awful.
White chocolate in France still has a piece of my heart haha.
A nice bar of chocolate used to feel good.they don't have that taste anymore.

NewspaperTaxis · 19/12/2022 00:59

What about those lovely looking boxes of assorted truffles that are popular this time of year? I don't seem to have seen them around. You know - a nice red rectangular box with a a ribbon around it, all kinds of flaky truffles like champagne ones. Are they still round? They were sold in £5 and £10 boxes.

We had a truffle shop in our town, it was a big deal in the late 1980s I think. The lady who owned it got into trouble because when she weighed the truffles she included the box or something in the weight each time so she was charging each customer more than she should have.

The quality however always was very good.

Remember these beauties, they were like little works of art.

Wow they look amazing. Look at the care and thought gone into them. And two layers! Don't think you can get anything like them anymore.

Re Lindt balls. Still nice but definitely got smaller.

The "Weekend"ones - I'd forgotten those!

There was another type, too, in a square box - and I think it was THREE 😍layers (so a cubical* box). It may have had little drawers you could pull out, rather than a lid you lifted . . .

Terry's Moonlight was in a blue and silver box-not sure if it had drawers though.

notanicepersonapparently · 19/12/2022 18:05

i loved Weekend as I kid. My dad used to buy them for me.
Twiglets are now horrid but can be made better by putting quite a lot of salt on them I’ve found.

I don't think it was "Moonlight".

I think it had a fancy name like "Shalimar"or summat.

Pretty sure there was a Bedouin Prince on a white stallion riding across the Negev to give them to his Beloved . . .

But I could be wrong - I am cursed blessed with a vivid imagination . . .

Twiglest were just caramelised salt to start off with - how did they make them worse?

Yes there was but I couldn’t find a picture of the version with 3 drawers! Life was so much more glamorous in the 70’s or it felt like it when I was little and wanted to be a Charlie’s Angel!

LadyVictoriaSponge · 19/12/2022 20:38

I give you the milk tray bar, gone but not forgotten.

Was that Fry's Turkish Delight?
The beloved had beautiful khol lined dark eyes

notanicepersonapparently · 19/12/2022 20:52

@Emotionalsupportviper They’ve made them low salt. It’s as exciting as eating all bran.

I miss Terry's Neopolitans. They were my childhood Christmases.

Also the old tins of Roses and Quality Street.

And mine. My mum used to get me a box of milk ones and a box of dark ones.
I'm old enough to remember Matchmakers being shorter not longer, when the box was a long, thin rectangle and the inside tray and 3 compartments. And you could get mint, orange or coffee flavour.
I had some mint and some orange ones last week. The mint were ok, but the orange ones were foul.

PAFMO · 19/12/2022 21:22

Cadbury's Inspirations came in a box that was like a chest of drawers. They were a bit "Hotel Chocolat-y" in design.

I have mixed up tw different adverts.

Were there wafts scarf things in that as well?

But there was definitely a square box with a fancy name and THREE, yes, THREE layers.

That might have been them.

I've looked them up and while not the colour box I remembered, this is definitely in the right direction . . .

How could I forget this?

And the Five Centres Chocolate Cream bar . . .

MrsFezziwig · 20/12/2022 01:01

The Five Centres Bar put me in mind of Fry’s Five Boys Chocolate (now you would have to be old to remember that)….

I keep saying to my daughter that I wish I could take her back in time to see how good the sweets and chocolates used to be.

Can't believe how great those tray boxes look, a real treat to open and choose one.

Remember the Yorkie advert with the trucker.
