Matchmakers - did they think we wouldn't notice!

Can't believe it....just opened the traditional mint Matchmakers for Christmas. They have only gone and stuck them inside a plastic tray inside the cardboard box in a disguised effort so they are now smaller in length! The matchmakers don't even touch the sides inside the plastic tray.

Over 40 years now I've had these and they always go the width of the box with a black cover over them.

Feel like there should be some law to say that they must put some warning sign on the packaging for three months or so if they make things smaller or change the recipe. I bought this box in good faith as it's the same size as previous years but they didn't tell me they were smaller! I wouldn't have bought them.

Anyone else noticed changes to their favourite Christmas treats or food?

This. They’ve been doing this to all kinds of chocolate for years. I’m not a chocolate eater really, but last year my 5yo asked why there were such big ‘finger spaces’ between the triangles 😂

This Toblerone, you mean?

I remember when Wagon Wheels were derided as being woefully unrealistic, as the actual wheels of real-life stagecoaches were far smaller and much less tasty....

Of course, their excuse will be that the amount of grams is clearly labelled - and if you don't keep a mental comparison chart in your head about every product out there and how the grammage has changed, that's your fault and not theirs.

I've noticed that, if you buy those Elizabeth Shaw mint discs at the standard price, they're arranged in a kind of carousel formation in a rigid shaped tray inside; but if you buy the same things from a cheap shop, they just chuck them loose into the box. Doesn't bother me, mind - they all go down the same hatch!

Chocolate oranges are definitely smaller this year, but I prefer it that way since there are fewer calories.

Does the 'orange' bit not give it away?! Fruit is so healthy and good for you, that you don't need to count the calories in it.

Nevermind91 · 17/12/2022 01:19

Rather than shrinking chocolates, sweets, etc, I wish they'd just put the price up, as happens to most other things.

Overthegardenfence · 17/12/2022 01:44

Don’t I still can’t get over they’ve stopped making topic’s bloody loved them ☹️

MrsFezziwig · 17/12/2022 01:52

For me it’s Cadbury’s Christmas tree chocolates. Used to be solid rectangular pieces of chocolate. They have replaced them with little hollow balls which don’t contain enough chocolate to cover a gnat’s arse. Their price in no way reflects the pathetic amount of chocolate they contain. I refuse to buy them and am going to improvise my own.

You can still buy Topics, even vegan Topics. They don't taste the same anymore though .

I noticed this week, that Tesco's sliced loaves have been reduced from 800g to 600g.

Reminds me of a message I sent my DP the other day about Trackers. They definitely used to be more than a sodding mouthful 😒

Wtf? What is even the point in that cereal bar? It’s tiny! They used to be much bigger!

GeorgeA12 · 17/12/2022 06:49

What about Kit kat chunky's? They were amazing when they came out full of thick chocolate around the outside, now it's spread so thin.

Anyone remember Clubs....they were thick with chocolate too. Just put the price up like someone else said....don't ruin our treats!

Heads up on Pringles. Nearly bought a pack on offer in tescos but I noticed this tube was smaller than normal and they also had a normal size tube at full price, so look out for this con.

@Zedcarz if you want chocolate orange you need to buy chocolate orange twirls. The best chocolate orange around IMO

@MrsFezziwig how old are you? I don't ever remember the hanging chocolates being full chocolate and I'm a child of the 70s!

panko · 17/12/2022 06:57

Noo loved that crinkly cardboard

They've only changed in the last few years I think. There are photos of my 7 year old stealing them off granny's tree when she was a toddler 😄

MindatWork · 17/12/2022 07:25

Yy to matchmakers being chewy now instead of crunchy 😒.

And dont get me started in after eights - they’ve change the recipe did those and they’re now chewy as well - there’s no satisfying little crackle as you bite into the chocolate.

I KNOW they’ve changed it as we had 2 different packs last year - a tin with 2 packs in that was given as a gift (original recipe, delicious) and a standard pack bought from a supermarket (new recipe, gross and craggy). The difference on ingredients? Fucking cunty palm oil 👺

MindatWork · 17/12/2022 07:25

Ohhhh so many typos 🤦‍♀️

Blueuggboots · 17/12/2022 07:27

When I was a kid, they came in a long box and were a similar size to matches? The massive ones are a "modern" take!

Toblerone has less mountains.

So that's why I managed to finish the last one in just 2 days... 😬

primeoflife · 17/12/2022 08:09

@Galvantula we're talking about Cadbury tree hanging chocolates aren't we? I've bought them for years and they've always been hollow (or I'm having my own Mandela moment!)

Pumpupthejampumpitup · 17/12/2022 08:09

@goingback Yes to the size of Curly Wurlys. I’d love to know just how long they were in my childhood.
Seems like they were about as long as a large ruler when I was a child. Now the length of a small ruler…

fancyacuppatea · 17/12/2022 08:21

Thanks, OP. I was going to buy some for DH. Was.

Other things I've notice:
Since the change of wrappers to the QS, the strawberry ones taste awful. They were almost like a raspberry ruffle (and I hate those too). They're sticking more toffee pennies in than before - must be cheaper to make.
Sainsburys own dry roasted peanuts taste stale (and gave me terrible stomach ache).
After8s stick your teeth together and taste more like toothpaste now.
Pringles have changed their recipe too. Really weird aftertaste, so having a smaller tub is a blessing!

They are quick to tell us about 'improved recipes' but don't tell us when they are underhand.

I remember he card board in the Bounty's. Had a Snickers the other day, dont get me started on that either!

PLEASE!

The pain of the "Snickers" (or to use its real name, "MARATHON") is still too raw for me.

Your post has been very triggering . . . I'm sorry - I . . . . I have to go now . . . don't wait for me - just get on with the thread.

I may be some time . . .

Plastic tray isn't new, we're definitely shorter last year
