Matchmakers - did they think we wouldn't notice!

Can't believe it....just opened the traditional mint Matchmakers for Christmas. They have only gone and stuck them inside a plastic tray inside the cardboard box in a disguised effort so they are now smaller in length! The matchmakers don't even touch the sides inside the plastic tray.

Over 40 years now I've had these and they always go the width of the box with a black cover over them.

Feel like there should be some law to say that they must put some warning sign on the packaging for three months or so if they make things smaller or change the recipe. I bought this box in good faith as it's the same size as previous years but they didn't tell me they were smaller! I wouldn't have bought them.

Anyone else noticed changes to their favourite Christmas treats or food?

Twiglets taste disgusting now

GeorgeA12 · 16/12/2022 22:50

They are probably longer than the matchmakers! They also don't have the same crystal mint crunch they used too either.

I think the plastic tray has been there for ages. I agree the mint crunch isn't as good though.

They are miniscule now. I swear they were about a foot long when I was a kid !! You certainly couldn't fit a whole one sideways in your mouth like you can now 😉😉

dropthevipers · 16/12/2022 23:23

It all start going to hell in a handcraft about the same time they ditched the cardboard tray to support bounty bars. Cunts, the lot of them.

GeorgeA12 · 16/12/2022 23:36

They are quick to tell us about 'improved recipes' but don't tell us when they are underhand.

I remember he card board in the Bounty's. Had a Snickers the other day, dont get me started on that either!

I am old enough to remember when they first came out and they were little short things. Like slightly long matchsticks.

Dibbydoos · 16/12/2022 23:54

I honestly don't know why they keep reducing the size versus putting up the cost, it infuriates me!

I won't be buying matchmakers this year then!

Now off to find a YouTube video showing how you make them....

Invisimamma · 17/12/2022 00:01

I've also realised when Argos says something is a 'great new price' that is code for 'this item was cheaper before and now we've bumped up the price.'

Also things coming in packs of 3 when they used to be 4 etc... infuriating.

Toblerone has less mountains.

I'm eternally upset about the very occasional appearance of 'seasonal orange aero'

HeddaGarbled · 17/12/2022 00:05

I’m going to be really boring but I think the Matchmakers packaging is much improved. There used to be a cellophane outer wrapping which was a nightmare to get into and then that silly slide on and off wrap around cover thing. Now, there’s a sensible cardboard box and inside, an easy peel lid.

ThanksAntsThants · 17/12/2022 00:06

Fuckers! Thank you for the heads up.

Twiglets haven't been right since they stopped doing the long ones

Zedcarz · 17/12/2022 00:10

Also love orange matchmakers, rarely see them and find Terry's chocolate orange never really hits the spot
Not enough strawberry or orange creams in a 'tin' of quality streets.
Do they even do tins anymore ? I find the plastic tub very meh. The lid isn't a great fit and they don't feel half as reusable as the old style tins.
As a child of the 70s and 80s, I generally feel sad about a lot of things missing from Christmas , through a child's eyes it was much more sparkly and full of romance and expectation.
Having near teens doesn't help, their present lists are much less joyous now it's mainly a list of sports clothes and gear with lynx gift sets.
And I can't drink like i used to anymore.
To make up for all of this loss, I just started watching eastenders after a ten year break. I need something to get excited about , might buy a radio times like the old days and mark out what we're going to watch over the next two weeks 🤣

The wrong shape entirely, but bashed up extra strong mints mixed in with cheap aldi dark chocolate, set & bashed into chunks makes a very acceptable alternative & the chunks make a very satisfying mouthful!!

CoolShoeshine · 17/12/2022 00:13

Matchmakers are dirt cheap these days - Poundland staples - and it shows

Ebananascroogey · 17/12/2022 00:14

Sorry my previous message was a reply to @Dibbydoos

This is a work of genius! I am going to make some of these 😃

Tereseta · 17/12/2022 00:20

We have a big tin of quality street in the stash, cost slightly more than the tubs but not that much more. Love the the idea of having the tin to reuse like my mum used to!

Toblerone has less mountains.

This. They’ve been doing this to all kinds of chocolate for years. I’m not a chocolate eater really, but last year my 5yo asked why there were such big ‘finger spaces’ between the triangles 😂

Blinky21 · 17/12/2022 00:26

They've been doing that for years with matchmakers

goingback · 17/12/2022 00:34

Quality Street tins in Waitrose or John Lewis if near-1.2 kg for under a tenner, we got the personalised tin with just the sweets we like .
Curly Wurlys were the size of my arm as a kid

Gingerkittykat · 17/12/2022 00:38

Chocolate oranges are definitely smaller this year, but I prefer it that way since there are fewer calories. The popping candy chocolate orange is so good that I might have eaten a whole on in one sitting.
