Mines got to be Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas by Frank Sinatra, but the modern versions (Buble, Sam Smith Et al) are also grand.

This song just instantly puts me in the Christmas mood. Hot chocolates, stockings hanging from the fireplace, cosy jumpers, frost on the windows, love and laughter Smile

The others I love are It's Beginning To Look a Lot Like Christmas, Merry Christmas Everyone. and Silent Night (ok that's a carol, but same thing).

FTONY, of course, but I also love the Robbie Williams/Lily Allen version of “Dream a Little Dream of Me”.

TorySteller · 22/11/2021 22:16

For nostalgia: 2000 miles, the Christmas song (Nat King Cole)

For getting pissed on mulled wine: Christmas wrapping, fairytale of New York

SinisterBumFacedCat · 22/11/2021 22:58

Slade - Merry Xmas Everybody

It’s all tinsel and glam rock and pissed grannies and farting Uncles of the 70’s and 80’s I remember

HappySonHappyMum · 23/11/2021 07:18

I'm actually going to hunt out some of the more obscure songs on this thread and mix up my Christmas playlist - thanks for the thread!

MangoSeason · 23/11/2021 07:26

Baby It’s Cold Outside.

I’ll fight anyone who says it’s dubious. It’s crystal clear that she wants to stay just as much as he wants her to stay. But because it’s the frigging 1940’s , she has to do the protesting dance before she can safely jump his bones.

Do they know it's Christmas. Band aid. It was my era.
Merry Christmas. Slade.

SpookyScarySkeletons · 23/11/2021 12:05

@OhGiveUp

Do they know it's Christmas. Band aid. It was my era. Merry Christmas. Slade.
Do they know it's Christmas - I'm sorry but omg that song makes me cringe so much!!

I just want to dig a hole and bury myself in it.

I find it really self important and saccharine. This is an older article but it puts my opinion into words so much better than I can!

@SpookyScarySkeletons A good friend made a parody of it, which has me in stitches each time I watch it 🤣
However, Christmas 1984 was my best ever and hearing that song takes me straight back to it.
( Even if I did get into an argument with my best friend who thought Sting was better looking than Martin Kemp!!! )

SpookyScarySkeletons · 23/11/2021 12:30

@OhGiveUp I was born in 84 but I've had to sit through the updated versions over the years!

P.S Sting was definitely better looking 😂😂

ArblemarchTFruitbat · 23/11/2021 12:31

Do They Know It's Christmas tapped into the feeling of the time. We had all seen terrible pictures of starving children on the news, and wanted to help. Buying a record was an easy thing to do, even if the lyrics weren't very good, in an era when the only way to donate otherwise would be to find an address and post a cheque off; or find someone with a collecting tin in the street.

lots33 · 23/11/2021 12:36

Little drummer boy - David Bowie and Bing Crosby

OhGiveUp · 23/11/2021 12:46

@SpookyScarySkeletons How could you say such a thing?? 😱
Have you no taste woman??

dustandfluf · 23/11/2021 12:51

Elton - Step into Christmas
Mud - Lonely this Christmas
Teresa Brewer - Christmas Cookies and Holiday hearts 😆

And my guilty pleasure Kelly Clarksons Underneath the Tree.

parkrunner1977 · 23/11/2021 12:56

Shaky - Merry Christmas Everyone, it's my all time favourite song nevermind just a Festive Fav! Always makes me smile when I hear it Smile

Followed by Fairytale of New York & Do They Know It's Christmas.

maddiemookins16mum · 23/11/2021 13:04

Too many to choose, but Judy singing ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ probably takes my top spot.

OhGiveUp · 23/11/2021 13:14

I also like Driving home for Christmas by Chris Rea..... despite the fact that he's been driving home since 1986 and never quite seems to have arrived.

spitneybrears · 23/11/2021 13:15

Oooooh that's very hard!!! If pushed I'd go with I Believe in Father Christmas by Greg Lake. It's SO festive somehow.

My favourite oldie is Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas sung by Judy Garland, which makes me emotional.

But there are so many great ones my backup list got too long!

The only Crimbo hit I actively dislike is John Lennon Happy Xmas War Is Over, it just drones on and on. I'd skip Wonderful Christmastime and Step Into Christmas too Blush

FlowerPower3110 · 23/11/2021 13:24

I can't possibly choose only 1! Xmas Grin Here's a list of my favourites:
Last Christmas
Feliz Navidad
Do they know it's Christmas?
All I want for Christmas is you
Santa tell me
Jingle bell rock

MamaWeasel · 23/11/2021 13:48

Fairytale of new York, Felix navidad and o Holy night

YouBelongHere · 23/11/2021 13:53

My top five are Underneath the Tree, Driving Home for Christmas, It's the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, Walking in the Air and I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day Grin

I made a Christmas playlist on Spotify last year and now I'm trying hard to resist the urge to have it on repeat - trying to save it until next Wednesday!

TheWoollybacksWife · 23/11/2021 14:15

In no particular order my favourites on my Spotify Christmas music list are

Carol of the Bells
'Zat you Santa Claus (Louis Armstrong)
The Man With the Bag (Kay Starr)
Must be Santa (Bob Dylan)
Christmas Time (The Darkness)
The Coventry Carol

I'm going to check out some of the ones mentioned previously.

TheFairPrincess · 23/11/2021 14:21

Very surprised that my all time favourite Bing Crosby's White Christmas hasn't really been mentioned at all 96 posts in!

My other favourite is Carol of the Bells. It's such a magical witchy song, I just love it.

Number 3 would be Little Drummer Boy just because of David Bowie and Bing together

rumrunner123 · 23/11/2021 14:23

Fairytale of New York
Carol of the Bells

animalcrossingfan2021 · 23/11/2021 14:31

Driving home for Christmas
Fairytale of New York
Christmas Lights

Itsnotover · 23/11/2021 14:52

'Do they know it's Christmas' should be banned from the airwaves. Racist, crass and patronising. Ugh I absolutely hate it.
