Child wants something they won't play with. What to do?

Ds is 6 and has asked for 2 things for Christmas.

One is a big hot wheels set, he already has 2 large hot wheels sets and doesn't play with either one and never really did. He's much more into his other toys. Plus we've already bought his main present.

The other toy he's asked for I'm pretty sure doesn't exist. It's something from a TV show and we've searched the Internet and toy shops high and low. He's been asking for this toy 3 years in a row and hasn't forgotten. We bought something similar but he wants the toy that doesn't exist. He's saying that Santa will know so it will be ok. What do we do ? 🤷‍♀️

Do I just relinquish guilt as he does have several nice presents.

Although I've never really got over my parents not buying me an anteater and an al a carte kitchen. Yes I did say an anteater.

If he wants this TV show item that badly and it is something that could physically exist (eg: not a working time machine or a talking horse etc), could you look into getting one specially made for him?

If he's only asked for two things total then I think I would get the hot wheels set, despite knowing that it won't be good value.

If he's asked for lots of things and you're able to get everything other than these two then just blag it. My son is 7 and is given regular reminders that Santa can't bring everything but he'll always get something that is on the list.

Whats the made up toy? Perhaps the mumsnetters hive mind would help?

I wouldnt buy the hot wheels.

After Christmas I'd suggest selling the other two hot wheels sets so he can afford the new one he wants, if he still wants it.

Out of curiosity what is the item that doesn’t seem to exist? Perhaps someone might have had a similar request and found a decent substitute.

Can you tell him Santa needs to see him playing with the existing hot wheel toys before buying more if you are in a position to buy them? If you've already spent your budget then perhaps a note off Santa saying he didn't buy hot wheels are he can see he has two lovely sets a d he's unable to get the other item..

To be honest looking again the hot wheels set isn't too much many so could possibly be bought be grandparents. I just know it will end up gathering dust.

The other toy is a Romeo Robot from PJ masks, but believe me I have shown him every robot, or anything PJ masks related. Even things on eBay as below which says it's Romeos robot but he says that's not it. There are PJ masks robots around but he says they're not the one he wants.

What does he want that doesn’t exist?

I think I’d put a note in from Santa saying he got his wish list but thought he’d enjoy xyz even more and has asked the elves to sprinkle extra magic on it for him…

Sorry perhaps I shouldn't have said it doesn't exist. We've shown him every single thing we can possibly find PJ masks or Robot related and he says that's not the one.

We've got him to describe it, even watched episode and asked him to point it out but he can't.

Romeos robot changes when he becomes a 'good guy' and goes to live with the 'pj pests'?

Could he tell you if the one he wants is when he helps Romeo or the PJs?

Because you're saying that when you show him romeo's robot toys, he says that isnt it. Maybe he has the name wrong? Or he has made something up and just doesnt want to admit he is wrong!

(This is where it helps not to do the whole Santa thing!)

Has he told you why he wants the Hot Wheels toy?

He can never seem to point it out.

He said that Ryan has it too from Ryan's world so we've even tried to find it on there.

I have wondered if the memory has got confused, or as you say he saw something else and got the name wrong. But we've never been able to find what he means.

That story struck a chord with me. We have a magazine with a PJ masks story about Romeo's mini bot. I've attached a pic of the story and a screenshot of a possible toy contender?

@orinocosfavoritecake he saw the hot wheels toy in the shops and hasn't forgotten.

In our house Santa bring one small toy and some stocking bits (socks, chocolate, bath bomb) but he says Santa will be able to find the Romeo toy.

From memory it was Romeos robot but it decided to become the PJ masks robot and be on the side of good.

The only other one I could find is the spinning one after it's been decorated by Gekko (looks good fun in my opinion). You could perhaps get that with a note saying the robot isn't a bad guy anymore because the pj masks changed him, so Santa can only get the good version/Santa was worried the bad guy would cause trouble in the house!

See if you can get the hot wheels toy second hand from Facebook marketplace or eBay. Have it set up and ready to go under the tree so he doesn’t notice the missing box. Then when he inevitably doesn’t play with it, you can sell it on for the price you paid for it.

My son used to want things that he saw on YouTube but it was like like it's in America only or it doesn't exist or it was around years ago and no longer sold lol so frustrating.

I'd get the hot wheels set and maybe a note from santa in regards to getting a similar kind of robot toy but not the exact one
