Child wants something they won't play with. What to do?

Ds is 6 and has asked for 2 things for Christmas.

One is a big hot wheels set, he already has 2 large hot wheels sets and doesn't play with either one and never really did. He's much more into his other toys. Plus we've already bought his main present.

The other toy he's asked for I'm pretty sure doesn't exist. It's something from a TV show and we've searched the Internet and toy shops high and low. He's been asking for this toy 3 years in a row and hasn't forgotten. We bought something similar but he wants the toy that doesn't exist. He's saying that Santa will know so it will be ok. What do we do ? 🤷‍♀️

Do I just relinquish guilt as he does have several nice presents.

Although I've never really got over my parents not buying me an anteater and an al a carte kitchen. Yes I did say an anteater.

Bloody Ryan. I'm not ashamed to say I tell my son outright that Ryan has all these things because he's a millionaire - appreciate that mind is older though.

Is it this thing? Not pj masks but similar design

Don't keep showing him the things you think might be the non-existent robot - just buy one and wrap it up from Santa. He will then be delighted as Santa is never wrong. The play set that Smile posted above looks great.

DD used to come up with weird presents that she'd seen on the TV. Sometimes we worked them out (a Glitterator turned out to be a Glitter Maker I think, that I asked my in laws to buy her, it was her fave present and we still have xmas ornaments that were glitterated that year) and other times I bought something that could meet the bill and she was happy with my idea of a substitute (a princess statue that apparently she'd seen when she was out with me once but I couldn't work out when or where she meant, in the end I typed in Princess Statue on ebay and bought her a 2nd hand garden ornament that she was surprised but pleased with).

Thank you so much for all the suggestions.

I will show him them all after school and see if we can get any further. I didn't know about the changing from good guy to bad guy and being decorated by Gekko so that might help.

I'll show him the Ryan toy too because it could be that he's got confused between what he's seen and remembered.

Good idea about looking for the hot wheels toy second hand.

Is it Robette? That's the red robot.

FinallyHere · 22/11/2021 13:38

could you look into getting one specially made for him?

I'd be asking him what he would do if he were making one himself. I know he is young but it's a great way of working out what is important to him about it.

And asking what would be different between the hot wheels he has and those he wants to get.

Good luck.

Justhereforthechristmasthreads · 22/11/2021 14:06

@Ilovetobake I put into Google "Bad guy robot pj masks" and this one came up - not sure if that is one already suggested

ShortColdandGrey · 22/11/2021 14:08

Smyths toys has PJ Masks Romeo's vehicle and Robot Factory playset for £43.99. You can also get the robot for £5 on ebay but it is used.

Pythonesque · 22/11/2021 14:34

I agree that 6 can be a good age for Santa to send a letter of explanation ...

Bad parenting encouraging children to want specific gifts rather than waiting to see what Santa brings.

Honeymint · 22/11/2021 14:47

@Joystir59 Yikes! That’s a hot take and a half! I’m going to assume your username is on point and you’re just stirring.

@Ilovetobake If you can’t find the robot (and I can see why you’re trying so hard, the mystery would drive me nuts!) I’d get the hot wheels car. As a kid I used to ask for these bears that I never played with, I just liked having them on the shelf. I guess to me they were the child equivalent of ornaments? Maybe he sees them that way?

Only if you’re still looking for presents for him of course, otherwise I wouldn’t beat yourself up about it - I’m sure he’ll be happy on the day with whatever he gets!

Absolute fucking bullshit.

Do you, as an adult, like to make choices over what you want and dont want? Do you like to avoid waste of resources and money by being specific about what you want?

Children deserve the same chance to think, decide and ask for what they would like. Making a list for Santa has been around for bloody years. Then you get 1 or 2 things from your list and everyone is happy.

It is totally bullshit to say that it is bad parenting to raise your kids to think and make decisions for themselves. There is almost always a surprise at Christmas as well, but there is also always a list and an excited child getting to choose a couple of things.

So I assume when asked what you would like for bday or Xmas you've always said a surprise since being a child? Doubt it.
Ilovetobake · 22/11/2021 15:15

@Joystir59 totally unnecessary to turn a nice helpful thread and post something mean and insulting.

FYI I'm not a bad parent 👍 have a nice day.

@Ilovetobake not another person would think bad parenting from this!

WaterAndRichTea · 22/11/2021 16:33

There are youtube videos from Ryans world, where he is ‘reviewing’ PJ Masks stuff

Maybe on one of those

WaterAndRichTea · 22/11/2021 16:34

How about this?

Can he describe the colour or shame or the size?

Child wants something they won't play with. What to do?
Cattitudes · 22/11/2021 16:42

he says he wants the bad guy.

Could Santa say that unfortunately the elves can only make good things in the North Pole. Does of course depend what else he is getting.

What an absolute dick of a response.
TurnUpTurnip · 22/11/2021 16:48

This is why my son no longer believes in Santa, he asked for a magic wand and never got it 😂

Scoobygang7 · 22/11/2021 16:57

Has he maybe got mixed up with Ryan's own robot toy?

Saladcreamormayo · 22/11/2021 17:01

@Ilovetobake I always wanted an Al a carte kitchen too and never got one.

OffRoadFozzyBear · 22/11/2021 17:03

Tell us more about the anteater!

Ilovetobake · 22/11/2021 17:05

Thank you so much for trying to solve this mystery.

I've shown ds every one of these links and he says they're not the one. Apparently it's not "circleish" and it's different to that one.

Even the Ryan's world robot which I really thought might be it. He said no that's a Ryan toy.

He says he's seen it on Ryan's world and in the shop. He said it's huge, kind of see through/not filled in and it's a bad guy, it shoots bullets from its head.

I'm sure he must have got mixed up with something else he's seen or it's not actually a robot he's talking about.

Not Robette either.

We've agreed Santa probably won't be able to find it 🤣 I do wish I could find out what it is he's on about though. Though I think the boy is sending me on a wild goose chase!
