What do you treat yourself to at Christmas that you don’t have any other time of the year?

Mine is my mums rocky road. She makes me a tray every year and it’s delicious Grin I also like a jar of cherries in kirsch for Christmas week - I have them on ice cream or chocolate cake.

Cheese on sticks, as we have called them since the kids were very small, aka Appeteasers. We only ever eat them at Christmas or on holiday in France.

Baileys, mince pies, tree chocolates, nuts in shells. I think that's all I would eat at Christmas that I wouldn't have year round.

Frostythesnowperson · 19/11/2021 23:52

Following for ideas of all the good stuff 🤣

newtb · 20/11/2021 00:02

Pickled walnuts
2 years ago, and still going strong, Glenturret 12 yr old whisky the first one I've ever liked. (Sadly bought by Grouse, who are now producing a peated Glenturret, it's 'cos it's non-peated that I like it.)
Can't get Cheshire due to sodding Brexit, could just go some blue on an oatcake. 😢

Luzina · 20/11/2021 00:05

@orchardgirl4

Roast goose, snowballs, quality street, mince pies, a special home-made cheese pate (sooo tasty on toast, melted under the grill).
I am intrigued by the homemade cheese pate… could you share the recipe?
Luzina · 20/11/2021 00:10

Smoked salmon appetisers from Tesco (the little round ones and the terrine slice ones)
Peaches in brandy, with cream
Xmas sandwiches from M&S
Trifle
Bread sauce

sandgrown · 20/11/2021 00:21

Twiglets and cheese footballs . A basket of nuts in shells and a nutcracker as we lose it every year! DS loves jelly fruits. We all love good mince pies with cream and Christmas cake with cheese in fact we like cheese with anything!

PanettoneSeason · 20/11/2021 05:08

@Onionbhajisandwich PANETTONE 😍🙌🏻 Food of the gods IMO! I’ve eaten one already this year 🤣

Also, Christmas cake (with the icing and marzipan 🤤) with a dollop of Baileys thick cream 😍

Signoramarella · 20/11/2021 05:20

Am loving this thread!!! It's 4am and I needed this !!

ifigoup · 20/11/2021 10:38

Things I always get at Christmas:

  • Twiglets
  • New Berry Fruits
  • Elizabeth Shaw mint crisp chocolates
  • Bendicks Bittermints for my dad
  • Those little crescent-shaped orange and lemon jellies arranged in a circle
  • Lindt reindeer
  • Chocolate money (in France they sell chocolate Euro notes!!)

As kids we always used to get Matchmakers and either Quality Street or Roses, but they are all too waxy and gross to bother with now.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 20/11/2021 10:43

Lebkuchen and stollen, I eat low carb most of the time but can't resist them at Christmas.

Also getting my mum to make a lemon meringue roulade. She makes a delicious one and I haven't had it in years.

Niederegger Dark Chocolate Marzipan Loaves

Not the flavoured ones , just these plain marzipan/plain chocolate

beguilingeyes · 20/11/2021 10:58

@TrudyRuby

Madjool dates from a local Middle Eastern shop Turkish delight from the nearby Turkish cafe Black pudding from THE world famous northern market (my nearby town) Maldon sea salt Homemade Baileys
Tell me more about the homemade Bailey's. I've become a bit of a Bailey's fiend this year. I have a bottle of the Bailey's Colada and the salted caramel one on the go.
Doomscrolling · 20/11/2021 11:06

Toblerone
Panettone - we usually go through two
Mixed nuts - I love them. I don’t know why we don’t buy them at other times!
Bloody Mary for Christmas morning and New Year’s morning, never any other time

Libertaire · 20/11/2021 11:23

Pork pie. The proper ones, from Melton Mowbray. I normally eat reasonably well, so Christmas is the only time of year I can justify to myself eating something so ridiculously unhealthy.

Shewholovedthethebanhills · 20/11/2021 11:30

@AperolWhore have you tried the Waitrose Bellini panettone? It’s not the best panettone ever but it does have the benefit of someone already having applied the jam (okay peach not apricot).

thisbabybliss · 20/11/2021 12:08

baileys! I don't allow myself to have it throughout the year so it has become very Christmasy for me, I love it. Also a cheese board with port, tried for the first last year and keeping the port tradition going lol

HelloBunny · 20/11/2021 18:35

I remember the first time I saw / are bread sauce. It was when I lived in London. Had never had it before (or since!) then. More than 20 years ago... Bisto gravy for me! (the box not the granules).

livingthegoodlife · 20/11/2021 19:17

Iceland have got the cheese footballs in for £2 a tub, not seen them anywhere else yet
MintJulia · 21/11/2021 00:32

Lebkuchen
Smoked salmon
Home made pea & ham soup
Ginger ice cream
Home made tiramisu

Sunshineandrainbow · 21/11/2021 00:34

@HelloBunny

M&S did this chocolate cream tub last year, which is basically the stuff from their Profiterole Dessert pot. Getting it again if I see it. And Baileys Cream!

Got an M&S Salted Caramel jar, last year, that was amazing... Haven’t seen it, but got the Chocolate Truffle Sauce instead.

Always wanted the Salted Caramel Chocolate Pinecones box... Can anyone recommend them? (and tell me that I must buy them!)

You should definitely buy them!
HeyFloof · 21/11/2021 08:01

Chocolate covered dates from The Datery.

It's my Christmas indulgence because they're moderately a dear do, and can be gone in about 8 minutes Grin I get a bag for me and one for my DM. DS like them too though, it may get expensive!

HappyGoPlucky · 21/11/2021 08:08

Gratuitously indulgent fatty foods which aren't normally sold during the rest of the year (thankfully). Chocolate covered macadamia nuts are my primary vice - if I eat one that's the whole tub gone.
And a daily evening cheese board with port. Followed by a January of fanatical healthy eating.

FindingMeno · 21/11/2021 08:12

Stollen, wensleydale cheese, nuts, and chocolates.
