Aibu to no longer give ds1 a stocking now he’s turned 18?

I can’t think of a better time to stop.otherwise I’ll be doing it when he’s 30!

I feel a bit mean though!

Ds2 (15) will still get one.

I'd do it, my mum still does it for me and I'm 28 haha and I'll probably do it for DS forever.

pringlebells · 12/12/2020 14:30

He might feel left out if his brother is still getting one, if you're considering g stopping is stop when he moves out

PoulePouletteEternellement · 12/12/2020 14:30

Everyone in my family gets one - no age limit!

They're sometimes more fun than the 'proper' presents. Glitterball

TheGremlinsAreComing · 12/12/2020 14:31

No age limit on stockings in my house Xmas Smile

SoddingWeddings · 12/12/2020 14:31

Massively unreasonable. Grin

My parents asked us what we wanted, and we begged for stockings to continue.

I'm now 40 and do stockings for my mum, dad and husband every year. They're the best bit!

HopeAndDriftWood · 12/12/2020 14:32

Stop when he moves out? I didn’t have a stocking as a kid, my husband made my first one when we were dating... I’m pretty sure his parents stopped doing his when he moved out, and then he lived alone so didn’t have one for a while, and we agreed to do them for each other on our first Christmas living together. It’s a nice tradition.

DifficultPifcultLemonDifficult · 12/12/2020 14:32

My ds is almost 20 and lives with his friend.

I got them both a Christmas stocking, and I probably will still be doing it when he is 30, I will also be sneaking them into their house and pretending that they came from Santa. 🤣🤣

Stopping would probably be the wise thing to do.

M0mmyneedswine · 12/12/2020 14:32

Stocking until they leave home at least

SleepingStandingUp · 12/12/2020 14:33

Yes yabu.

Stop them when they moved out

rottiemum88 · 12/12/2020 14:33

I've literally never understood the stocking thing. Why are stocking presents any different to regular presents? Each to their own obviously, but yes I'd probably stop now he's an adult.

MirandaWest · 12/12/2020 14:33

Everyone who’s here for Christmas gets a stocking. So this year that’s DH (48), me (45), DSS (25), DS (17) and DD (15).

Justmuddlingalong · 12/12/2020 14:34

Stockings only stopped here when they moved out. I've never heard of a Christmas stocking age limit in my puff.

JustaPatioWithAspirations · 12/12/2020 14:36

Wow you guys are hardcore!

Stockings for adults!

Not sure what moving out means in terms of being a student who comes home for Christmas....as of next year that is what he will be

My DD (nearly 32) gets a stocking as does my DGS and my gentleman caller. They are in lieu of "proper" presents (whatever they are).

I really enjoy curating and sourcing them using the Christmas threads on here

*tongue firmly in cheek

Justmuddlingalong · 12/12/2020 14:38

If you're under my roof on Christmas morning, you get a stocking.

Lemonsyellow · 12/12/2020 14:38

I think if both are living at home, you should treat them the same. I do stockings for my student children too.

HidingFromDD · 12/12/2020 14:39

I still do stockings for mine - 23 & 25 and both moved out so we arrange a suitable day. DD1's fiancee also gets one now. For the last few years they've also been doing me one. they're a mix of presents and little stocking fillers (usually include paper planes, table top games, some form of chocolate). they're fun and part of our christmas tradition - don't see why you'd stop tbh

bruffin · 12/12/2020 14:41

Dd 23 is getting gin in her stocking.
My DM used to a box every year for her grandchildren filled with little things she had collected through the year. None would let her stop and last year Dc wanted me to carry on tradition as DM died a few years back. DC are 23 and 25, they just get a box instead of stocking

Pascha · 12/12/2020 14:44

My mum sent a stocking over to my sister in Australia for years. She was 28 when she came home to England.

DryRoastPeanut · 12/12/2020 14:45

Carry on with your stockings.
I have stockings here for my adult children when they spend Christmas with us. Last year I put stockings on the bed for my 30year old daughter and her partner, and on all the children’s beds.

Why on earth would you quit giving stockings?
I think I shall be putting stockings out for myself and Dh this Christmas and it’s only us two at home this year.

NastyBlouse · 12/12/2020 14:45

Reading this has made me realise I missed out! My parents stopped doing stockings the same year we had the Father Christmas chat. Which in my case was 8 or 9 I think.

Another one for my Big Book of Upbringing Grievances... (tongue largely in cheek there)

SansaSnark · 12/12/2020 14:46

I think it's a bit harsh to just stop without at least telling him you are going to stop! Otherwise, he might be in for a shock on Christmas morning, which feels a bit unfair.

Why not have a chat with him, and see what he thinks?

ShalomToYouJackie · 12/12/2020 14:46

YABU, I'm in my 20s and my DM still does me a stocking every year even though I moved out years ago. DP is 30 and still gets a stocking from his parents!

AllTheNames · 12/12/2020 14:47

There would be a full blown riot if stockings stopped in my family. Everyone gets one, including grandparents when they were still alive. I do my mums and partners and child's, my mum does mine, my brothers and my dads, my partner does mine, his mum does his and his siblings and dad.

All other parts of Christmas could go apart from the stockings, roast potatoes and pigs in blankets.

SusannahSophia · 12/12/2020 14:49

My parents stopped stockings when I was 18. It made me unreasonably sad! I still do stockings for my 3, 23, 21 and 18, but they only get sweets, chocolates, socks and pants in them.
