How many gifts do your children have to open on Xmas day?

Not how much have you spent, but how many gifts do you think is enough?

TheLightSideOfTheMoon · 21/12/2019 20:48

Usually about 8.

I think that's plenty.

Saltdoughmuncher · 21/12/2019 20:50

I’ve just finished wrapping and realised one child has 18 from us and the other only 12. Wondering whether they will notice.

They will also get plenty from relatives so I would guess at around 30 things to unwrap each.

ineedto · 21/12/2019 20:51

10 from us
1 from Santa plus stocking
6-8 from aunts and uncles
8-10 from grandparents

Ridiculous really Xmas Blush

LoisLittsLover · 21/12/2019 20:52

About 25-30 although some stocking fillers are tiny eg nil varnish, toe seperators etc

Shahlalala · 21/12/2019 20:53

Well my 5 year old has 8 I can think of then oranges, chocolate coins and one small one in her stocking.
My 4 month old has about 3, but that’s mainly for the 5 year old so she doesn’t think he’s being left out.

Shahlalala · 21/12/2019 20:53

And a few bits from relatives.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 21/12/2019 20:54

4;each from us/Santa/their sister. Plus stocking.

6 thousand million from grandparents, aunts, uncles etc. (Slight exaggeration, but big generous families. Probably about 30 or so each- but it's not all toys- books, PJ's, blanket, craft stuff etc.)

PennyPeach · 21/12/2019 20:54

I aim for about 25 each and that includes things like selection boxes and jelly belly beans tubes. They're 13 and later teen.

Cannot break the 'pile of gifts' thing - no idea why

Abibranning · 21/12/2019 20:54

Far too manyBlush but he really played a blinder this year. By changing his main request after we'd already got lots of little bits as that was all he wanted and DH was the one that broke and insisted we got the big present too! So for once too much is not my fault (it usually is me).

TinselTitsMcTreeee · 21/12/2019 20:56

Just marking place waiting for the first person to say one each; because anymore is ridiculous and excessive Xmas Grin

For the record usually about 6-10 here.

dementedma · 21/12/2019 20:56

Not counting stockings, about 8-10 each

daisypond · 21/12/2019 20:57

Do you count stocking fillers? Not counting stocking fillers, they would get one to three presents from us, one from their grandparents - only one set of grandparents - and one from each other - three DC. About six in total.

Tiddlertoddler · 21/12/2019 20:57

About ten from us, 3/4 from each set of grandparents and then maybe about 10 more from other relatives combined, great grandparents, friends etc. Too many really. Plus a Christmas Eve box with pjs, Christmas book etc.

SpeedofaSloth · 21/12/2019 20:58

Quite a lot, but I wrap up stocking presents so three of those will be a packet of sweets. They each have 3 "proper" presents this year, with an extra one to share. The rest are stocking fillers.
I came from a family where a big pile of presents was normal for kids, and some of it would be functional (pants, socks etc.) but there was very little at any other time of year. I can't quite shake the memory of how exciting it was, so I do the same for my own DCs now.

crosstalk · 21/12/2019 20:58

1 main one and a stocking. With mandatory tangerine! DCs will get another 4 from relatives and lots of book tokens they can spend as they like.

PennyPeach · 21/12/2019 20:58

@TinselTitsMcTreeee ha! I was trying to get round that by saying amounts and not cost!

I will shriek at the first person to trot out that annoying poem thing too

OP posts:
PennyPeach · 21/12/2019 21:00

Pyjamas for one and dressing gown for other

Traffic light lollies in each

Lindt bear in each

Book in each

Pringles cracker in each

Stress toy gum ball thing in each

What exactly is a stocking filler? Some people pop to Poundland, some put expensive make up or things like earphones in, or computer games.

TwigTheWonderKid · 21/12/2019 21:03

It was a huge relief this year to properly accept that less really is more. Last year we scaled back and adopted the approach of buying fewer but really well thought out gifts rather than the scatter gun approach and it was absolutely brilliant. The children paid attention to what they had and appreciated them all properly rather than it being some ghastly unwrapping marathon.

This year we talked about how it woudl be abetter Christmas for all of us and the planet if they had fewer gifts. Their lists were well thought through and modest in terms of quantity (though not necessarily cheap). They are 10 & 14 and each have 6 presents from us, Father Christmas and their grandmother. We have no other family but they will get 2 or 3 small things from family friends.

PennyPeach · 21/12/2019 21:03

A stocking filler for me is just something small enough to fit in there - one of mine has, for example, some royal mint coins in his and they were £80 altogether

OP posts:
Frazzled2207 · 21/12/2019 21:05

Mine have got about 8 each from santa though some are small, chocolate coins etc. Most of the presents will fit in the stocking though I hate the term stocking filler because that implies stuff just to fill up the stocking rather than stuff they actually want.

They get quite a lot from family too.

AhhhHereItGoes · 21/12/2019 21:06

Way too many.

From us about 6 each but my parents have got them like 15 each. Some to be fair are small like little notebooks or stickers. Take my sister into account and DHs parents who got about 8 for them each we are talking 40-50. Also got a tenner each from my Grandparents.

I think you do what's right for your family but think a few small, few medium and maybe one bigger seems reasonable (smaller price and use wise so below £5, below £30 for medium and over £50 for big.

SpeedofaSloth · 21/12/2019 21:06

My kids stocking fillers this year include:

Hatchimal
Lego mini figure
Bendy and the Ink Machine key ring
Twisty bracelet thingies
Chocolate coins
Fruit Pastilles big tube
Malteser reindeers
Gel pens
Notebooks
Lynx
Craft kits
Books and annuals

DC are 6 and 11.

daisypond · 21/12/2019 21:07

Good point, Aroundtheworld. Stocking fillers are things like a calendar, soap, bubble bath, mascara, toothbrush (older teen girls).

SpeedofaSloth · 21/12/2019 21:07

We don't do a Christmas Eve box, though.
