Not how much have you spent, but how many gifts do you think is enough?

20 from Santa in a sack. Lego, socks, pants, book, chocolate, small toys, calendar, lip balm etc.
1 "big" present from us.
1 moderate present from their siblings.
In laws get them 1 very nice present. Then we have a lot of other family who give them presents. They know they are very lucky children.

LettuceP · 23/12/2019 09:09

10-12 each under the tree, stockings filled with small bits (£25 each) and then they will probably get about 5 extra presents from friends and family.

LettuceP · 23/12/2019 09:11

Oh and a Christmas eve box with pyjamas, Christmas books, gingerbread men, and a cupcake kit.

SisterSistine · 23/12/2019 09:17

I just consulted my spreadsheet and I think they will end up with about 10 from us/Santa if everything is wrapped separately. Which is loads according to some people not this thread and nothing from others. Then maybe 7-10 from relatives. There will be clothes and books in that.

I'm perfect happy with my decisions. Everything is wanted. Nothing is single use or tat that we bought. Can't vouch for family gifts.

EmrysAtticus · 23/12/2019 09:34

We haven't bought any tat and most of the relatives I know haven't either. There are some who I have no idea what they have bought so that may be tat but probably not.

whataballbag · 23/12/2019 09:41

DS's are 5 and 2, they have 9 presents each plus they went to build a bear at the weekend which cost a bastard fortune in itself.

They both have a stocking each which is full of things like chocolate coins, Haribo, bubbles etc

OvalCanvas · 23/12/2019 09:51

3 gifts each from us , a further 3/4 each from relatives.

We've cut down massively on Christmas spending as it was just ending up in getting lost in their rooms and being found during a big tidy up.

JaJoJe · 23/12/2019 09:57

on the tat thing, define 'tat' I have loved stuff from childhood that many would call 'tat', my kids dont throw plastic toys out so they cant end in landfills, things get passed down the family there's a decade between my kids and things have circled back round after dozens of cousins still in great condition.

I can only think of one plastic thing we ever 'threw away' and that was one of those plastic tractors but it was used every day and utterly destroyed beyond any repair... but I'm of the old school that these things aren't 'disposable' if others had lived like that we would have less issues now instead of everyone that threw everything away blaming the rest of us for buying stuff assuming we are all as wasteful as they where.

AHippoNamedBooBooButt · 23/12/2019 09:57

I think they have 6 gifts from "santa", one from us, prob about 8 in stockings (including chocolate coins etc).
Grandparents and aunts/uncles have all contributed to 1 joint gift but I have also suggested maybe a bag of sweets/selection box/cheap t shirt as something to open individually.
So in total about 18 or so presents. I was feeling bad thinking I hadn't bought enough and was wondering if I still have time to amazon prime some more, but reading this thread I feel a little better. We've tried to go less presents and less money this year as so much goes unloved

PennyPeach · 23/12/2019 11:06

@shoebedobedobedobedoo oh give it a rest and get back to your satsuma and one hand knitted goat

They have about 4 or 5 under the tree to unwrap, plus a stocking and two outfits - one for wearing on the day, one for wearing in bed the night before.

I have definitely been guilty of bulking out stockings with tat in the past, so this year we're scaling that back - they have things they'll actually use (I hope) and I've done a lot more thinking about them.

They get loads of other things to unwrap - they have an abundance of aunts and uncles and doting grandparents on both sides, so it's not like they're missing out on a 'pile' of presents.

NotAClue101 · 23/12/2019 11:34

My little one will be 10.5 months old, so we've not gone mad and bought things he needs as he is now needing more advanced toys, that teach.
We've got him 7 presents from us - no stocking this year as he wouldn't understand.
Grandparents however have gone mad! So with all their presents plus auntie and uncles - a silly amount 🙈

Trouble we have is my parents are separated, so straight away it's 3x grandparents.
I'm one of 5 and they will all get him one gift each
My auntie has gone mad and got him about 6 things
3x great grandparents
And husband has 4 aunties and uncles 🙈

We said not to worry about getting him gifts, but people insist, so we've asked for needed things such as clothes in next size up, toys to help with development, books, pyjamas etc

I have no idea where we will put everything after! Then his birthday is only 6 weeks later 😰

Knowhowufeel · 23/12/2019 12:57

The 18-22 mine get includes things they need/want such as body sprays, flavoured coffee, homemade hot chocolate, clothes and jewellery.

This number includes stocking and under tree presents.

We don't do any Christmas Eve boxes or any other gimmicky things.
Just gifts on Christmas Day, with one each from the total kept to open on Boxing Day, which is a tradition in our family.

Knowhowufeel · 23/12/2019 13:01

Several of the presents are books, which were asked for. Some factual (ie, astrophysics) and some fiction, but all will be kept indefinitely.

crosstalk · 23/12/2019 13:19

I think we do what we do ... no judging. But I would seriously be tempted as an aunt to put something into a children's ISA the amount I would spend on something they might not like or would add to piles of stuff that their parents can't store. With maybe a tiny present like soap or whatever to unwrap.

Hoolajerry · 23/12/2019 18:59

Ours have 5 each under the tree and then stockings which have 13 in each. These are mainly little bits like scrunchies, shower gel, mini lego set, books etc. I don't buy any plastic tat.

JaJoJe · 23/12/2019 19:37

Around the world -

Our stockings are mostly sweets (chocolate orange, popcorn, loads of lollies, popping candy, gum, rainbow drops, animal crackers, forrero roches, jelly beans etc...) with 2-3 little toys (like stickers, bouncy ball, small teddy etc...), worried I bought way to many sweets this year.

I'm done now, no more shopping or ill end up buying more unneeded sugar so tomorrow is for tidying instead.

Hairwizard · 23/12/2019 19:48

Ds6 has about 11. Dd19mths about 8. 1 main each. Stockings with little colouring books and bits and 2 christmas lollies. Ds has a gift bag with clothes in that i kept by. The rest went straight to wardrobe. Didnt do bag for dd as too young. Dtwins are not quite 6mths yet, 2 or 3 small toys each. Asked bils/sil to contribute to 2 highchairs rather than buy separate gjfts for them. They are also buying between them something for dd. This was done in hopes of cutting down their spending and saving them money and also so that kids didnt end up with too much stuff. But i fear theyve gone and bought other stuff too. Sigh.
When i sat down to sort through all the stuff to be wrapped i had a shit attack thinking id gone overboard. I might hold 2 or 3 back for another day later in week for them.

clippityclop · 23/12/2019 19:52

Just counted and they have nine each from us, and about a dozen little bits and bobs (sweets, toiletries, stationery etc) for their stockings from Santa. He also leaves family stuff to share so a couple of dvds, board games, sweets and biscuits.

maxiflump1 · 23/12/2019 20:18

Have 2 DS' one is 4 and the other nearly 1. We have brought them each one bigger present (approx £40 each) and that's it from us. Santa then brings them a stocking with books, orchard toy games, pyjamas, chocolate etc (around £30-40 a stocking)

We do have a bigger extended family though and all my aunties buy for them as well. Grandparents will also buy them 4 or 5 gifts each as well and as DH's parents are divorced that means extra! I've done it exactly how I did it as a child and I just have the most magical memories of Christmas Smile

irregularegular · 23/12/2019 20:22

5 from us
10 small stocking fillers
2 from aunts
PJs on Xmas Eve

(Oh, and just for this year - a car, which is the big surprise joint present. very much a one off! and obviously not being unwrapped. They are 16 and 17)

They would have the same number of other presents even without the car. In the past, when they had grandparents who bought presents, it was slightly fewer.

mamaduckbone · 23/12/2019 20:44

It depends if you count stocking fillers. If not then 3-4 from us plus 5-6 from other family members.
Usually about 10 things in stockings in addition, but lots of them are small.

Itsnotalwaysfair · 23/12/2019 22:12

Dd is 5. 2 from us under tree. An instrument and
a stuffed toy.
7 in stocking - pencil case with new felt tips and pencils in it, 2 smaller travel versions of childrens board games, a small metal model to build, clip on earrings, a pen she wanted, sweets.

2 more from family.

So 11 in all. I'm really excited for her.

Lilicat1013 · 23/12/2019 22:21

I have two boys aged 6 and 9

One present in their Christmas Eve box

Eight in their stockings. Stocking presents are anything that is small enough to fit and could be any value. I am limited as to what I can put in as they both have additional needs so I can't put any more sweets/food that I would be comfortable them eating in one sitting as they wouldn't understand to save it or space it out. Also everything needs to be safe if chewed on as one child has pica so cheaper items are often unsuitable. They have things like DVDs (cheap kids TV show ones), small cuddly toys, Play Doh, books and spinning toys.

Nine each under the tree from us ranging from £2 to £50

Six from other family members

They have been also given vouchers which we save till later in the year so they can choose a toy either to take on holiday or for the school holidays.

It's 24 in total which is a lot when you add them all up, some of it is secondhand though, I try to buy secondhand when I can.

Kanga83 · 23/12/2019 22:27

4 from Santa and four from us- from Santa they have asked for very little actually so Santa has brought a surprise each to make it 4 each, and from us we do wear, need, want, read so they have new huge Disney store bath towels as they needed some, a couple of 2020 annuals, a hoodie for their sports, and scooters as that's what they've wanted all summer.
