Not how much have you spent, but how many gifts do you think is enough?

OP posts:
theSnuffster · 21/12/2019 22:23

One has 25, the other has 22. (I only know because I use an app to keep track, it's a lifesaver!) We've spent equal amounts though. That number includes 'stocking' gifts like a new toothbrush each etc.

Yesterdayallmyfish · 21/12/2019 22:27

About 3 bulkier presents from Santa plus lots of books and small items. 1 from each of 6 relatives.

onestepforwardtenstepsback · 21/12/2019 22:27

35-40 each from us and about another 25-30 from family.
We don't do socks etc at Christmas we just buy them as needed.
Then ds1 has his bday on 27th he'll get about 15 from us for that. And about 25-30 from family

Ridiculousanx · 21/12/2019 22:27

4 each from the family (there's five of us), then maybe 5 more each from others. So 9 in total plus stockings (handfuls of tat and chocolate).

troutknickers · 21/12/2019 22:28

@SpeedofaSloth I'm the same as you. We had a large pile of presents at Christmas as kids but hardly anything else throughout the year (only a token gift on birthdays also) and it was so so exciting, so I end up going mad at Christmas for the kids and buying stuff to make sure it looks like there's enough there

NotYourHolidayDick · 21/12/2019 22:29

I've started wrapping.

So far they've got 30 each in their stocking, but some of those are £1 items (chewing gum/chocolates), and some are quite expensive.
My 2 eldest (11 and 13) have 16 each under the tree, and my 4 year old has 24 as her things were cheaper.

I'm over the moon this year though, as I picked up a huge bundle of Orchard toys games for the 4 year old off Facebook, and she LOVES playing them together. She's got 6 to unwrap to add to her already-huge collection and I only paid £10 for them Grin

polkadotpixie · 21/12/2019 22:29

Oh god, I've bought wayyyy too much tbh 😩

My 15 month old has 19 presents from us...that's shoes, clothes, books and toys etc

Nothing stupidly expensive and a lot of it he does need but I think it's still too much. I'm going to put a limit of 10 presents next year

He'll also get presents from Grandparents, Aunties and other relatives

PhilomenaChristmasPie · 21/12/2019 22:30

3 each.

Jodie77 · 21/12/2019 22:32

Far too many. I haven't had a chance to purge the hoard either so my house is going to look like a cross between the closing down sale at a toys r us, primark in the January sales and curry's on Black Friday Shock

virginpinkmartini · 21/12/2019 22:32

Anyone else hate the idea of 'stocking fillers?' I'd rather not buy a bunch of toys that look like they came free with a magazine. Those sorts of toys end up broken/ in the bin. MIL loves to buy filler tat gifts as well...
For every 5 or 6 small parcels of plastic crap, you can get one really nice thing with some longevity that doesn't clutter up your house. (Not a snob, BTW. I'm on a budget and like money to be used sensibly.)

PhilomenaChristmasPie · 21/12/2019 22:33

TinselTits I don't think it's ridiculous or obsessive, but we don't have much money.

Babybel90 · 21/12/2019 22:33

About 10 plus another 10 from grandparents and there will be maybe another 5 from aunts and uncles. Last year we ended up opening them over about 3 days.

Chocolatecake12 · 21/12/2019 22:34

Mine have about 10 stocking fillers plus between 6-8 presents from me. They get a couple of small bits from grandparents and one bigger gift. Then one from their aunt and uncle. No gifts from their dads side of the family but my dps family will buy them a gift which I’m always really touched by.

Sux2buthen · 21/12/2019 22:37

Loads. And loads. And loads again. But, we hold back throughout the year.
I wouldn't like to guess a number

I also loathe the present rhyme

TakeMeToYourLiar · 21/12/2019 22:37

DS is 3
He has 12 gifts from us, biggest are a kindle and a bike, smallest a pair of pyjamas

He also has a stocking which has the one thing he asked Father Christmas for, a few cheap wooden toys and some chocolate coins

He'll get a few gifts from MIL and BIL and a few from my family when we see them in the new year.

Slightly overboard but all will be loved, and total parental spend around £150

Notso · 21/12/2019 22:42

For me stocking fillers are small things that fit in the stockings rather than cheap crap.

Like PP I didn't have a stocking as a child just some presents in a sack.
I introduced stockings for my kids when DC3 was born days before Christmas and I wanted to stall them a bit while I fed him etc. They worked really well for a time but this year the kids are older and have asked for some expensive items plus the younger two have asked for things I'd normally put in the stockings, sweet pizza, cinema tickets etc so they'll be going in the main sacks downstairs.

SpeedofaSloth · 21/12/2019 22:46

@troutknickers I've read sometimes that this is about growing up in a working class family (which I did) then finding yourself in different circumstances as an adult (which DH and I have), but not leaving behind the Christmas habits. That feels about right to me, I know that I give the kids all I didn't have (mainly extra curricular activities really) but I can't quite buy into that saying which goes something like "something to want, something to need, something to wear, something to read". It strikes me as as a bit miserable, in the context of my own childhood.

formerbabe · 21/12/2019 22:49

Anyone else hate the idea of 'stocking fillers?

I try to fill them with useful things that they need anyway

Deodorant
Socks
Pants
Stationery
Books
Hair bands
Toothbrush

crosstalk · 21/12/2019 22:49

OMG have forgot to get anything for stockings. Off to local shops.

SpeedofaSloth · 21/12/2019 22:51

Oh, and the Christmas Eve box thing being quite alien to me is also a childhood thing, just realised. The deal was always that you went to Midnight Mass, then got to open one present at home before going to bed. I would always choose a small stocking present so I still had the big ones to look forward to. I'd forgotten.
DS comes to mass with me on Christmas Eve (DD is a bit young yet, it's too late for her) but in our parish it's always around 2100 so not actually Christmas Day when we get in, so I've not introduced this to him.

SpeedofaSloth · 21/12/2019 22:55

@formerbabe I was talking to a colleague about this recently and her stockings as a child were also stuffed with things they needed for the months ahead, including things like new toothbrushes, and having them wrapped up nicely made them more special, which I think is really lovely TBH.

LauraPalmersBodybag · 21/12/2019 22:58

My 4 year old dd has got 1 big one, 1 medium sized and 1 small one. Plus 5-6 stocking fillers - temp tattoos, some nice socks, a book.

My newborn has got 2 little things that his sister will unwrap and try to claim as hers!

Plus there will be presents from grandparents and BIL + partner.

I’ve recently become so sick of crap all over the house so donated a lot of unplayed toys to charity. I’m sick of clearing up after her and the chaos of stuff everywhere. I politely asked GPs to opt for quality over quantity and made a few suggestions of toys I think she’d like.

Hadenoughofitall441 · 21/12/2019 22:59

They have 7 big ones and around 10 stocking prezzies

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 21/12/2019 23:00

My DC are 6yo and 1yo. They each have
10-12 presents from DH and I, although a couple of those are "Santa presents".
2 or 3 presents from one set of grandparents and about 6 from the other.
At least 5 presents each from extended family and another couple from friends of ours.
Plus their stocking which has about 6-8 small, inexpensive gifts. The 6yo's stocking is a mixture of practical things (socks, pants etc) and tat from the Claire's/Smiggle sale that she'll love but we wouldn't normally buy. The baby's stocking has a couple of bath toys, a little touch and feel book, some socks with space rockets on, again nothing big or expensive.

BatleyTownswomensGuild · 21/12/2019 23:16

About 6-7 from us, same number from wider family and one from Santa.

I try not to go mad as DS's birthday falls within a few weeks of Christmas. Keep pleading with the family to give him money rather than gifts because he gets so much all within a 3 weeks time frame, so it gets overwhelming.
