Not how much have you spent, but how many gifts do you think is enough?

From us....one main present, 5 smaller presents and a stocking from Father Christmas.
They got cash from my dm and one small gift from dh's mum.

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 21/12/2019 21:09

Mine have two each under the tree .

This is not competitive middle-classing/eco wankery, I promise. I've spent plenty, and they're old enough to get that it's either ten presents costing a tenner, or one costing £100. They also get "proper" presents in their stockings - Costa vouchers, makeup, earphones, paperbacks etc.

And MIL will get them a sackload of novelty shite, in case I've called it wrongly Grin.

DragonMamma · 21/12/2019 21:12

Oh gosh, about 20-25 each. Some of them are clothes and trainers.

They’ll probably have a dozen or so off my mother too.

We love Christmas and they don’t get loads throughout the year.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 21/12/2019 21:12

Two teens.. four “proper” presents each, plus stocking fillers from me (bath stuff, pants, socks, sweeties, scented candle etc).. money from my parents for a family treat.. but will go to their dads with much bigger families and get a lot more there as well.

vdbfamily · 21/12/2019 21:13

I do expensive stockings but usually stuff I would end up finding anyway as mine are teenagers and still at school so no income. Things like nice socks and pants, new earphones, moisturiser, deodorant, sweets, a magazine, make up, nice pen, dried mango, biltong etc etc
Then they are allowed a budget of about£100 and can choose what they want. My son who had a birthday this week, asked for a joint present to do with his computer and so has had it already. He has slippers, dressing gown and hair dryer under the tree as he needed all 3 and I wanted him to have something to unwrap. DD16 wanted expensive perfume and expensive straighteners so I got the straighteners on eBay, used, for£60 rather than£150 so she could have perfume too. DD 13 wanted lots of clothes which again I would have to buy her anyway but she is allowed non essential stuff. They will have a gift from my parents and my cousin and a secret Santa from rest of family as we decided amount of gifts was obscene really. Also my brother died in November so we wanted to keep things fairly simple as mine off us have had any shopping time

Longdistance · 21/12/2019 21:18

So, 24th we go to my mums house and they open gifts there. The 25th both dds get a stocking and their main presents, but we do stockings first. Then breakfast, then tree presents. Usually about 10 stocking presents and 15 tree gifts from Santa. Though there will be gifts from friends and family under there. Dds haven’t asked for anything big this year, so it’s bits and pieces.

babychampam · 21/12/2019 21:18

Dtwins are 4, they have 25-30 presents each from me and dh. That's not including stockings but I don't spend much on the stocking fillers.

They'll probably get another 6 presents each from family.

PennyPeach · 21/12/2019 21:20

I never had a stocking as a child (whips out worlds tiniest violin😀)

No, my parents just didn't do them. No idea why and as they both died recently I'm not able to ask. However, we did have a large pile of presents to open - or it seemed large to me anyway!

So, because I wasn't brought up with the stocking thing, it only occurred to me to introduce it a few years back. And I basically fill it with small wrapped gifts that I hoik off the main pile.

About 15 each and then cheap bits in their stocking mainly food / drink related. All teens

ThrilledToTiddlyBits · 21/12/2019 21:24

Mine have 16 things each in their stockings (monetary value around £25 max).

7 yo has 13 presents, 11 yo has 15 but a tenner value less than his brother. I've stopped trying to even them up now 😂

Nat6999 · 21/12/2019 21:25

Ds has a large gift bag that will have a tablet, case & Keyboard, a couple of books, pjs, slippers, toiletries, notebooks & pens in it. He is getting cash from my mum, Game gift cards from his auntie & uncle on my side of the family. I don't even know if his dad & his family will be buying or giving him anything, their relationship is slightly estranged so anything will be a bonus, he doesn't expect anything.

ColdTattyWaitingForSummer · 21/12/2019 21:26

Oh and they gift to each other as well.

TowerRingInferno · 21/12/2019 21:27

About 15 each. They don’t get anything from anyone other than me.

EnglishRose1320 · 21/12/2019 21:27

Christmas Eve they will get PJ's and a board game to share.

Christmas day: sticking with 21 presents in each- a mix of useful, edible and fun.

Presents under the tree, 1 from us, 1 from Father Christmas and 1 from each other.

Then a couple from each set of grandparents, although Ds1 is getting less from the grandparents, he knows some of the grandparent money has gone into his main present which is more expensive than we'd normally spend.

Then maybe 5-8 small presents from aunts/uncles/family friends.

Basically very lucky boys on Christmas day!

mummyof2boys30 · 21/12/2019 21:27

Prob about 15-17ish from Us/santa. Not counting stocking fillers which is just pringles, choc coins, socks etc.
And about 4/5 from other relatives as most give money

joffreyscoffees · 21/12/2019 21:28

DD is 17 months and she's got 18 presents to unwrap from us Blush plus a table and chairs a Christmas Eve box (book, wooden puzzle, dvd, hot chocolate, chocolate buttons, pyjamas, slippers, dressing gown). I'm not sure how it happened tbh, I feel it's too much and she's going to be overwhelmed.

That's not to mention all the presents from grandparents, uncles, aunties etc. She's got a wooden kitchen and washing machine too that will be set up at home as my parents bought her that and are staying here xmas eve.

I think I might space out over a few days, will see how she goes. Some of them were minimal cost and are more what would be called stocking fillers - although we don't have stockings. I think I've just got caught up this year as she's 'into' a lot more stuff. She will probably only care about her new books!

mummyof2boys30 · 21/12/2019 21:28

I should add that quite a few of those are books/booksets.

MegBusset · 21/12/2019 21:30

8 or 9 presents under the tree, these include 2-3 books, a selection box, onesie etc so not madly expensive.

10 stocking presents but again not expensive, includes a can of Coke, Lego minifigure, Beano annual etc.

DC are 10 and 12 and thankfully not into expensive clothes yet!

FREEM · 21/12/2019 21:31

4 or 5 eaxh to open from us and may be 3 or 4 from any relatives.
stocking is quite big with a few toys.

MegBusset · 21/12/2019 21:31

Oh and they don't get much from extended family, a few books and maybe a voucher or small amount of cash.

Devaki · 21/12/2019 21:32

How big are peoples stockings ??
I couldn't fit an annual etc in ours.

Salene · 21/12/2019 21:33

1 large gift and 6 smaller gifts each

So 7 gifts from Santa

banivani · 21/12/2019 21:35

My kids were trained to only put three things on their letters to Santa and we’d try to get them those three things (from us, extended family or Santa). Didn’t want to encourage them to be greedy and write lists the length of an arm, and wanted to find out what they really wanted. Then there’s sweets and stuff. We do presents from family on Christmas Eve (one each from everyone like) and Santa presents on Christmas morning, when they might get three in total, maybe four - and that would include boring stuff like new socks wrapped up. The pile of gifts thing looks good wrapped but when unwrapped it all has to go somewhere - and where?

moreismore · 21/12/2019 21:36

3 from us, one from Santa, about 5-6 small bits in stockings (also santa). They will get more from family but we meet up with some family pre Christmas and exchange gifts then so that reduces the pile. I am really trying to keep things small while kids still small to set expectations. Thought I had done too much but now feeling better Smile

Lovemusic33 · 21/12/2019 21:38

I’m not sure, I have been wrapping things as I buy them since October, I’m guessing around 20-25 but most are items of clothing (teens).

They also have stocking but items are mainly £1-£4 per item (ten items).
