Not how much have you spent, but how many gifts do you think is enough?

OP posts:

I've just counted and they each have 16 presents in their stockings, this ranges from post it notes, hairbrush, pants and socks to a computer game and curling tongs. Nothing cost more than £20 and the majority less than a fiver. They have one present from santa.
They've got 3 presents from us and 5 from family.
Santa present and stocking when they wake up and the rest after breakfast and chocolates. It's a lot but not completely excessive.

Popadoodledoooo · 21/12/2019 23:24

11 each from Santa this year which feels like a lot less than usual.

Scrumptiousbears · 22/12/2019 00:21

I suddenly feel ashamed. I haven't counted but the final list for each child filled an A4 ruled pad and then some. In slight defence that included stocking fillers and boring things they need like socks and knickers, hair bands etc.

CandyCaneLane0 · 22/12/2019 00:33

12 presents plus stocking, and he'll get a few more from family

TheHobbitMum · 22/12/2019 00:43

Mine have about 20 - 30 each from and about 10 from grandparents, spent what I'm comfortable with and spent what we can easily afford

CloudyVanilla · 22/12/2019 00:54

This year my DC, 4 and 2, have about 15 presents each to open, they will then have a stocking as well.

In years to come I would like to set a number limit on presents of max 10 from us and a stocking and main present from Santa. I'm working on one of those "gifting rule" things like the for gift rule and adapting them until I get one that feels just right.

I like to know exactly what and how much they are getting, not least to avoid disparity, but I know my lovely mum will keep adding bits to her pile of stuff to them so it's hard to keep an exact count of what they are getting!

PiggyInTheMiddle19 · 22/12/2019 00:54

I dread to think.. We swapped stockings for sacks as everything seemed bulky.. Prob 15beach in there.

For under tree from us maybe another 15..? But it varies as ds is older and his are very pricey so he has less gifts. Girls have more

Theyve already got 7 each from aunts, godparents etc

Then grandparents. Rest of aunts etc
I would estimate 50 approx give or take..
I also can't get past the whole having a nice pile of gifts. But I have learnt over the years it to buy any old shite to bulk it up.. I stick to what I know they'd use, play or wear

CloudyVanilla · 22/12/2019 00:54

Four gift rule*

gluteustothemaximus · 22/12/2019 00:56

15 each for little ones 4 and 9.

3 for the 17 year old.

Plus stockings.

We are the only family so there won't be any others.

katewhinesalot · 22/12/2019 01:05

The big pile was important to me as I remember the magic of big piles when I was young. I tried to build the anticipation, similar to what I felt as a child, by not giving them stuff throughout the year and birthdays weren't a big deal.

Lots of necessary everyday items that would have been bought for them anyway and creative packaging in big boxes. Separating sets etc. Crafty stuff from poundland. When they were young it would have been 60 or so but the total value excluding necessities would only have been £100-150. As they've got older they've got less and the presents are better quality but I still like them to have stuff to open. Again mainly necessities or consumables.

elliejjtiny · 22/12/2019 01:17

My dc have a stocking each, a main present and a set of books from the book people. That's from us. Then they get loads from grandparents, aunts, uncles etc.

Christmastreejoy · 22/12/2019 01:32

15 small bits in a sack (notebooks, books, craft stuff). 2 main gifts and a stocking

They will have a couple of gifts from my in-laws and a gift from their aunt on top

Christmastreejoy · 22/12/2019 01:34

Oh and 6 or 7 joint gifts (games, animation kit etc)

LilQueenie · 22/12/2019 01:38

Should have? That depends on the family/person and what they decide. no right or wrong.

how much dd has ..... enough for me to get slated for it Xmas Blush

BlackCatSleeping · 22/12/2019 01:52

About 5 each, plus a bag of treats from my parents. They also have their stockings which are full of sweets, small toys, and card game, etc.

BlackCatSleeping · 22/12/2019 01:53

Also, we don't do things like clothes or books for Christmas presents. We just buy them as and when throughout the year.

Chienloup · 22/12/2019 02:08

Mine (5, 9, and 10 year olds) have six each from me, one from my brother, probably 4 each from my parents. DH's aunt has also given them £8 each. Plus my mum does them a stocking with things like a bath bomb, a pen, socks, sweets, stickers.

Pipandmum · 22/12/2019 02:13

One big present and about four or five smaller ones (anything from a book, socks, funky rubber, shirt, slippers, mini drone...). One each from grandparents which us usually cash (so two in total) and aunts (again two in total).

DCIRozHuntley · 22/12/2019 08:13

See even 4 or 5 presents in addition to a stocking seems a massive amount to me! Where do you keep everything? Do your DC remain engaged with the unwrapping? Mine have their stocking of useful bits and bobs (not toys, except a cuddly toy and a tiny Lego set) but want to play immediately with their gifts, so 2 each seems plenty. That said, we do have 4 DC and they're all under 8 so quite little still.

daisypond · 22/12/2019 08:17

DCIRoz It makes a difference how old your DC are, and obviously with four it could add up to more “stuff”. Mine are older teens and they get one to three presents, but they tend to be clothes items.

daisypond · 22/12/2019 08:22

This year one of my teens has specifically asked for no presents at all. Nothing whatsoever. I’ll make up a stocking of things to eat, I think. I want to give her something.

Thehollyandtheirony · 22/12/2019 08:25

One big present each and then about 15 small (in value). The small sized ones will go in their stockings along with clementines, chocolate, etc. The larger ones like books will be wrapped. I sometimes get a couple of big/ medium presents but this year it is only one each.
They will get 8 presents from family.

Sunshine1235 · 22/12/2019 08:26

Mine are 2 and 3 and they’ve got 3 main presents to share, plus a game and pjs each (which I might do on Christmas Eve haven’t decided yet) and then a stocking each which has 6 things in. So I guess that’s 8 things each and then 3 to share.

They’ll probably get about 8 more things each from family though. It’s crazy how it adds up, I thought we’d kept it fairly simple but 16 presents sounds a lot, the family ones will be spread over visits over 10 days though so hoping they won’t be too overwhelmed

Justabadwife · 22/12/2019 08:32

Dd has 25 from me and DW.
Probably 15 from my mum, maybe 10 from MIL and 15/20 more from other family and friends.
So quite alot really.

Greyhound22 · 22/12/2019 08:45

Mine has four from us plus stocking - stocking has probably 10 in but is little bits like fidget spinners.

Two off my parents.

Three off PIL.

Five off Aunts and Uncles

One of GGP

One from a friend

Maybe a few odd ones so maybe 20 plus stocking. He is 5.

I've been letting him open a few odd ones - selection boxes etc as we get them to calm Christmas morning down a bit.
