What's still on your Christmas to-do list?

We've got a week to go! I feel like this is the point when some people are completely finished and putting their feet up in anticipation, others are on the final run, and others are just getting started.

We're not hosting this year so I haven't had too much to do, but still on my list is:

  • Pick up the last few chocolate things for stockings
  • Take in delivery of the final present (hopefully soon...)
  • All the wrapping
  • Bake Christmas cookies, and maybe mince pies if I can be bothered
  • Attend a couple of Christmas parties this weekend
  • Buy some wine and cheeses (our contribution to Christmas dinner)
  • Pack for travelling to visit family

What do you still have left to do? I find these lists helpful in case I've forgotten something...

Tomorrow we are wrapping all the presents bar a few that haven’t arrived yet 🙄

We have guests coming tomorrow for a few Christmas drinkies, so need to tidy the house.

I have a few boozy presents to get, quite easy.

Write some cards (I’ve really cut down as it’s a waste) I rather meet with someone/phone call to wish them a merry Christmas.

Get veg for Christmas dinner.

We are going away —early— on Boxing Day to Portugal, so need to pack shizz for that.

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 20/12/2019 04:28

Clean the oven
Rework the front door wreath - it needs some extra sparkle
Trip to M&S for party food
Make chocolate log, peppermint bark and sausage rolls
Clean downstairs bits cleaner doesn’t do
Cook for & host Christmas party
Santa breakfast on Sunday
Tie up current project at work Monday/Tuesday ready for new role in new year

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 20/12/2019 04:29

And make a cheesecake/soup as my contribution at my parents for the big day

Cedilla · 20/12/2019 06:15

Wrap everything

Make marzipan, put it on Christmas cake, ice and decorate cake

Work my way through a reasonably long list of 'last minute' (and ever-expanding) food shopping

I was going to make a chocolate cake - might do if I've got time. Mince pies are being bought this year, sod it

Pick up turkey and pre-prepared veg box which I splurged on this year in a spirit of trying to make things less stressful. Remember to get a joint of pork from somewhere as plan is to roast this and have it cold after Christmas with the turkey

Get various last-minute things at request of elderly DM who is housebound and relies totally on me to facilitate her buying too. We're staying with her and the entire orchestration of Christmas is down to me. Dh is with me but mysteriously becomes incapable of independent thought at this point, so I have to wrangle him. I used to love Christmas; just wish it was all over now.

Getting there, but can I say how demoralised I am by the shops getting their sale stuff out? I’m happy about reductions, I know it’s going to really help some people, but it’s like Christmas is done in lots of shops. A lot of the sale stuff seems to be old stock they’ve dragged out of the stockroom.

Online food order arrived last night - I'd forgotten to add potatoes to it and had a good few subs (mostly acceptable but had to send back the rice as not). I DO have my streaky bacon for the bird though (that is often a problem finding this time of year).

I've made a small bit of space in the freezer - but not enough for leftover turkey, so I need to use up a few more things this weekend. Might have the lasagna on Monday night.

Slightly growly as my planned large family gathering in the days after Christmas now appears to be cancelled by others (due to someone else doing an event a few days later) - and I had bought a load of things for it already that we don't normally use...oh well, it may need a neighbourhood party in spring to use them up.

Today, I am carrying bags while DD does her shopping (once school is finished).

Tomorrow we will put the tree up, (and maybe the garland on the stairs, and definitely do the front door decoration)
drop boxes back to storage unit,
possibly get firewood on our way back,
go to local deli for cheese etc,
get some flowers in florist for me to have some fun arranging them,
maybe find a turkey somewhere.

And also - WE WILL RELAX. Even if it kills us!!

BiddyPop · 20/12/2019 10:10

The rest of the weekend is for wrapping, tidying, baking, …..and maybe getting some tunes going as well.

FairyJuice · 20/12/2019 10:47

star that malteaser pudding looks AMAZING Grin I will have to enlist the kids to help me make one. May have to budget a whole extra box of malteasers for eating while making Grin

Not loads to do here but am very very pregnant at the moment and norovirus has been doing the rounds in the house on and off for the last month so I feel ridiculously tired and a bit unprepared.

-wrap the last straggling Xmas pressies (found some I had forgotten about in the attic yesterday Shock)

-deep cleaning (DH is planning DIY on Saturday so most of this will be done Sunday)

-tackle mountain of laundry

-remember to take meat out of freezer in time

-buy bows

-finish grocery order before Monday

I will cook the majority of the meat and prep the veg and desserts as much as I can on Tuesday. Also want to get some christmassy activities in with the DC as DH is finishing up today and we've had a really busy few weeks.

lucysmam · 20/12/2019 10:50

Shopping is all done, barring one small gift for dd2 as something hasn't arrived but I'm not sure what (but don't want to re-buy, just suspect it will be late so probably wrapped for her birthday).

Need to wrap it all now.

Still to do - open the wine this evening & enjoy the Christmas holidays!!

Need to see my Dad - probably tomorrow - with his gift and cake.

Tesco delivery's coming on Monday.

Erm...that's it except for some cleaning & usual washing etc.

& I didn't have a flap this year (but might if Lidl, or somewhere else local to me, haven't got any mincemeat -it didn't even come up on my tesco search Xmas Hmm

Stompythedinosaur · 20/12/2019 13:05

Good thread! 4 days left and I still have to:

Have a clean round (I am meant to be doing this now).
Clean out all the pets.
Put Xmas decoration boxes back in the loft.
Wrap a few presents, not many.
Put up more ribbon to hang cards on.
Convince dc to deliver cards around the village.
Post some other cards.
Dp is doing the Christmas food shop today, but it will need putting away.
Put up some shelves in the spare room.
Shift desk and chair from spare room into the garage to be sorted after Xmas.
Run the village party tomorrow.
Put up one decoration that fell down.
Sort out bag of kid's clothing a neighbour has given us.

Writing it down actually helps! It's a fair bit, but I'm the closest to being organised I've ever been.

I8toys · 20/12/2019 13:52

Pick up M&S food for party tomorrow and cake for mum's birthday
Wrap and deliver neighbor gifts
Two sacks of Mean Santa game gifts to wrap - one for ds's party and one for Christmas eve lunch
Clean out freezer in prep for delivery (fridge already done)
Make exploding boxes up for Christmas eve, wrap pyjamas and stick on items with glue gun
Get Christmas hair do, brows and nails done tomorrow
Decorate our outdoor seating area for ds party tomorrow night
Food shop arriving tomorrow - try and shove it anywhere it will fit
Pack for a night at Manchester on Sunday to see Jack Whitehall
Come back early from Manchester to work half a day
Christmas lunch with work colleagues Monday
Prepare for mum's 70th birthday on Christmas eve, get balloons filled with helium
Birthday lunch with Mum on Monday
Prep food to take to inlaws on Christmas day whilst packing for Venice on boxing day

lucysmam · 20/12/2019 14:43

@18toys what's Mean Santa?

I8toys · 20/12/2019 14:46

First of all you get a Santa sack and a large dice. Wrap as many fairly crappy but useful things as you can manage and put them in the sack. Then add a couple of really desirable things such as a ten pound note, £5 amazon/nandos/costa gift card.

To play everyone gathers round with the sack in the middle and takes turns to throw the dice. Throwing a 6 entitles you to take a present from the sack, open it and place in front of you. Throwing a 1 entitles the person to steal a gift from another. Obviously at the beginning of the game if nobody has yet thrown a 6 there isn't anything to steal so that throw would be a void.

The game ends when the sack is empty and everyone gets to keep their spoils.

RandomUsernameHere · 20/12/2019 14:58

Only things left for me are:

Wrapping the DC's presents, but my DMum has kindly offered to do that!
Pick up some puddings to take to MiL's house on Xmas Eve.

Otherwise all sorted, feeling very relaxed as we are already off work and at my DParents' house, so don't even need to travel!

eitak22 · 20/12/2019 15:47
  • Wrap birthday presents for mum and grandad (christmas birthdays)
  • Make mince pies and chocolate treats
  • wrap DH presents (will do Monday when hes working)
  • wrap presents DSIL sent for family members
  • finish Christmas stitching
  • tidy and clean house
  • pack for staying at my mums
lucysmam · 20/12/2019 15:52

Aaah, thank you. We played similar at Guides on Tuesday but with raffle tickets rather than a dice!

Laniakea · 20/12/2019 16:01

thank you @marvelousways she’s pretty cheerful about it ... finished her shift at 11 last night & went straight to a house party & back into work at 10 this morning. I don’t think I had that energy at 19!

I managed to get everything done - I’ve added iron the napkins, lay the fire/bring in wood, make more tablet (we ate it) & buy more Bailey’s (we drank it) to the list. Apart from the tablet I think I’ll add it onto dh’s list though Grin

Jog22 · 20/12/2019 16:02

Christmas? Is that soon?

Caroian · 20/12/2019 20:18

I had a good idea in my head of all the many things I still need to do, but thanks to this thread I have now consciously confronted them and made a list... which is slightly horrifying! I think I prefer to have all these tasks in my head than actually written down!

But we have:

Take our son to a Christmas party tomorrow and I have an osteopath appointment.
Deliver local cards/gifts (neighbours and friends)
Pick up party food for Boxing Day buffet from M&S
Pick up prescription medications
Sort out beds and bedding as we have 5 people staying over.
Move furniture - We've had some old furniture collected for charity today and now need to rearrange a couple of bits
Christmas drinks with friends
A mountain of laundry
Dye my hair
Clean the house top to bottom including tidying our son's bombsite of a bedroom, reorganising the guest room and descaling the shower heads
Put up new mantle shelf.
Wrap all the gifts! (absolutely none wrapped so far)
Finish shopping - collect Turkey, sausage meat and pigs in blankets from butcher, plus buy all the veg and perishable stuff (food is otherwise done though)
Clean the fridge and stock with drinks
Clean the ice maker which keeps getting jammed!
Marzipan the Christmas cake
Ice the Christmas cake
Baking - 2 lots of cookies, cupcakes and mince pies.
Make the trifle
After all that - make a start on the gin......!

lucysmam · 21/12/2019 14:14

My list is now tiny...

My dad visited this morning (also dropped off dd2's birthday present), but didn't stay long .

Wrapping to do, Tesco to take in, mincemeat to find. Ice our Christmas cake later on.

That's it. So I'm going to give upstairs a good clean when I've finished my coffee.

8Track · 21/12/2019 14:46

Make: gravy, cranberry sauce, bread sauce.
Consider making mince pies.

Write my cooking timetable for 25th.

Work out defrosting timings!

Cook a ham for a Christmas with my parents on 26th.

Tidy away the finished with decoration boxes etc. After getting out any other decorations we'd like!

Buy ginger ale, bockwurst, milk and carrots, plus alcohol free beer for 26th.

wendz86 · 21/12/2019 14:52

Finish wrapping last few bits.
Pack to go to my sisters.
Nearly there now!

Allthepinkunicorns · 21/12/2019 14:57

I've got to:
Sort out the dinning room, ive just finished painting it so it needs cleaning and furniture putting back into place.
Collect dh gift from the bike shop on Monday.
I need to get some fresh bread, milk, veg and other bits and bobs. I will do that on Monday.
Pick up the turkey on Christmas eve.
And wrap the last presents.
So much to do :(

TheTurnOfTheScrew · 21/12/2019 15:02

I have to buy my last few presents for assorted lovely older ladies in DH's family - all coming from the booze aisle of the M&S ten minutes walk away so no biggie. Cards for the neighbours to deliver. Homemade mince pies are requiring constant replenishment. And I need to do a small trip to Sainsburys as I was too slow booking my online shop. Today was the last slot I could get, and so I'll need to restock a few fresh bits.

Ninkanink · 21/12/2019 15:12

Only bought presents for my two grown-up daughters this year. Waiting for delivery and then will need wrapping. One more present for each of them will be ordered after Christmas in the sales and will be a bonus surprise in January.

Tomorrow my girls are coming over and we’re doing the Christmas ham for the days leading up to Christmas. Also baking cinnamon cookies, making orange and clove pomanders and will maybe watch a festive film.

Ingredients for our initial Christmas celebration with them on the 23rd (they are with their dad 24-26th) will be bought tonight, along with ingredients for Christmas Day dinner (Surf’n’turf with duchess potatoes) for my OH and me.

Ingredients for our main Christmas celebration with my daughters will be bought after Christmas and we’ll have the dinner (Goose and all the trimmings) on the 27th or 28th.

Other than that, nothing! I love the low-key Christmases we have. Xmas Smile.
