70s Christmas

Hi.
DH and I are doing a 70s themed Christmas this year. We're ridiculously excited about it actually. Grin.

Now, I've been getting the decorations in bit by bit. No problems with vintage fairy lights, baubles, foil garlands, daft looking fairies etc. But I cannot seem to find a silver tinsel tree ANYWHERE.

And I really want one.

Am I too early in the year? Does anyone have any idea where I might find what I'm after? All I've been able to find is tiny 2ft ones. I want 5ft at LEAST.

I'm sure Home Bargains has Old Spice in last year

70sWitch · 28/08/2019 14:29

@StrumpersPlunkett. Haha pretty sure he'd prefer the Star Wars toys.

Or Dr Who. Or Jaws or ... you get the idea Xmas Grin

I have ONE idea. Getting DD a Holly Hobbie doll for her collection.

Omg a Holly Hobbie doll, perfect

Drogosnextwife · 28/08/2019 14:47

I would try the bargain shops. Probably a bit early yet, give it 3 weeks, most Christmas stuff will be out then Wink

Love the tree! Still got my mum's original 70s baubles & I really treasure them! I often browse 70s gift sets, usually just start with a Google image search & go on from there. I was SO tempted with an original 1978 Bronnley soap set last year but I couldn't quite justify it. The whole idea of a 70s Christmas is brilliant. Maybe your gift could be a quilted dressing gown? I thought they were amazing & the height of sophistication!

70sWitch · 28/08/2019 14:50

Am pretty sure she'll LOVE it

Loving this thread! What was there about Christmas in the 70’s that seemed so special? or is that just old age and nostalgia 😁

Love the Holly Hobbie but for me it was all about the Girls World Styling Head!

70sWitch · 28/08/2019 19:24

Ah the DC are too old for a chopper I think. Having said that DH might like one 🤣

I still have my LP of The Partridge Family Christmas Album, if you'd like to borrow it ...

My 70s Christmas stocking was made of clear plastic with red/white printed edging. I remember it well.

Redshoeblueshoe · 28/08/2019 22:02

The reindeer on the bottom is fabulous.

You’ve forgotten the Tunis cake. McVities ones are extinct, but they’ve reappeared in Sainsbury’s for the last couple of years (although not as good as their 70’s counterparts).

@Redshoeblueshoe. I have 4 of them. Pic on page 6 of the thread. I love em. Xmas Smile

Tunis cake? Never heard of it.

CentrifugalBumblePuppy · 28/08/2019 22:12

It was the jewel in the Boxing Day buffet, nestled between the celery sticks and pickled onions. I preferred fruitcake (soon be time to make this year’s!) but Tunis was the favourite of every grandparent with few (real) teeth.

70sWitch · 28/08/2019 22:13

Haha. Sounds tasty. Xmas Grin

Years, not year’s. Ruddy iPhone. And much use of the word ruddy, shouted by Dad at full volume when trying to carve the turkey and one of the new fangled electric carving knife blades fell out.

70sWitch · 28/08/2019 22:20

I'm so enjoying everyone's memories of 70s Christmases. All a bit different but alll equally brilliant.

Ah nostalgia. Xmas Smile

Mind you, I think I was BORN nostalgic, and it's only getting worse. Xmas Grin

Why don't you ask on facebay/freecycle about silver tinsel tree. Bet someone has one in their loft!

somewheresorted · 28/08/2019 22:56

I think for true authentic 70’s you also need to watch an episode of Fanny Craddock Cooks for Christmas as currently showing on Iplayer - quite a sight to watch her cut the turkey with a pair of garden secateurs!

That's it! I'm dead. 😂😂😂😂😂
